“Lady Emilia is the one he’s dating, right?”

Garrett exhaled slowly, watching alongside Peter as Subaru and Julius sparred together in the courtyard. —Or rather, they had stopped sparring seriously a few minutes ago. Now they were more just roughhousing. “Yeah,” he said.

“Hm.” Peter was quiet for a moment. “I kinda thought…”

“Why, you little—!”

Julius had grabbed ahold of Subaru’s side, squeezing. Garrett could hear the ensuing laughter from where he was standing, clear as day.

“Yeah,” Garrett muttered. When he first saw Julius and Lady Emilia dancing together, he’d initially thought that Julius had cracked his skull open and decided that it was a great idea to start two-timing the Sword Demon’s new grandson. “Apparently, that was never actually the case.”

“Hm.” Peter nodded. “But — they sleep together sometimes.”

“Yep.”

“And they do…this…every single morning.”

“Uh-huh.”

“And Julius has been calling him ‘Subaru-chan’ for the past two years.”

“Yes.”

“Hm.”

The two men were silent for a long moment, just — watching.

“I didn’t actually think that one was interested in women,” Boris confessed, finally speaking up. “I was certain he was gay.”

Garrett didn’t disagree. For the past…however many years it had been, most of the Order had quietly assumed the exact same thing — whether Julius himself realized it or not.

Finally, they watched as Lady Emilia emerged from the manor, calling out to them both with a smile on her face. They watched as Julius perked up first, and then dragged Subaru up behind him before going to meet her by the entrance. They couldn’t see either of the boys’ faces from this angle, but they could see Emilia’s: warm and smiling wide. They watched as Julius quickly pecked her on the cheek — before immediately turning to Subaru and hugging him HARD, spinning him around as he squawked and flailed.

“Lady Emilia IS the one he’s dating,” Peter clarified. “Right?”

“…I think so.”

Lady Emilia hid her amused smile behind her hand, watching as her new boyfriend playfully tormented her lost love. Her shaking shoulders made her giggles visible across the courtyard regardless.

Boris sighed. “Well, if SHE doesn’t care, then…”

“Not like it’s any of our business,” Garrett muttered.

With that, the three soldiers stood and watched as the Finest of Knights proceeded to be more physically affectionate with Subaru than with his own girlfriend.

If you don't mind me asking why do you think Cater wouldn't initially have a healthy relationship? I haven't done any of his personal stories yet and don't know much about him so I'm curious!

NcjsnsksnNSKSBKSS It’s funny that I have so many requests to analyze Cater, because he’s not very popular on my blog, or in the TWST fandom as a whole. He’s one of those boys that I feel like gets overlooked because he, like Vil, is seen as superficial. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

I don’t even like Cater personally, but I have very strong opinions about him...!! My thoughts below the cut (warning: spoilers for Cater’s UM and personal stories; there is also discussion of mental health); it’s going to be long:

OKAY.

So from the beginning, it is clear that many people, even those within his own dormitory, see Cater as shallow and carefree. At first glance, it’s easy to see why people have this perception of him. Cater’s always smiling and speaking casually, and he is on his smartphone/social media quite often. When it comes to actually having to carry out tasks, he tricks others into taking on his duties or otherwise finds ways to shirk his work.

This is all a façade that he has worked to perfect and present to the world, and most people fall for it.

Going back to his MagiCam obsession, I don’t think it is just a cute gimmick or funny quirk. Time and time again in his personal stories, Cater is shown to be seemingly addicted to his phone. He goes to exceptional lengths to make sure his MagiCam account is aesthetically pleasing and thinks about how he can maximize views and rack in new followers. He’s much more calculated than you would think him to be.

Now then. Why is Cater so dedicated? He’s probably just a smart phone or social media addict, right? He’s just an influencer, so it’s all just a part of his job, right? I think the real reason is something much more dark.

You can see in his ceremonial robes and lab coat personal stories that there are little hints of Cater’s “true” personality.

When he is alone, he is much more somber. He makes remarks about how he is tired and doesn’t care about the entrance ceremony (a typically very exciting event), yet he still forces himself to be present and wear a smile. However, what makes Cater happy in this moment is that fact that he took nice photographs for his social media.

When signs of his “true” personality show around his classmates (he infuses his “sad” personality to a mandrake), Cater firstly denies it--then he doubles the amount of work he initially did in order to cover for the “sad” mandrake. This is the same Cater that shirked his work, making the freshmen paint the roses red and arrange cutlery for him. 

From these two SR personal stories, we can deduce a few things: 1) Cater is not daijoubu, and 2) he uses MagiCam/social media has a means of coping, and 3) he puts forth great effort to hide the sad side of him from the public eye. Now, it’s unclear as to why exactly Cater is like this, since we know very little of his past (only a bit about his family life, like that he has two bossy older sisters and that the Diamonds love “cute things”). That’s a whole 'nother story for a different day.

For another perspective, let’s consider Cater’s Unique Magic, Split Card. A Unique Magic is something that only a single person can use--it is highly individualized and tied to the personality, history, and/or attributes of its user. Just as Riddle’s Off With Your Head allows him to have a sense of control in his life when he had none in childhood, I believe Cater’s UM is a reflection of who he really is. He wears many “faces”, just as Split Card allows him to duplicate himself many times over. Each clone acts independently, almost as though they have a mind of their own, each a personality or a mask that Cater wears to distract from his true emotional distress. He is also said to be good at acting, which he uses to his advantage to mask what he is really like.

The point is, it’s perfectly justifiable why many people view Cater as being shallow--because that is what he wants the public to see and believe. What’s truly difficult is capturing Cater’s true essence--someone who is hurting, but shuns others for fear of being rejected if he is anything less than the pretty photos he posts on MagiCam.

For this reason, I feel like it would be difficult for him to be in a healthy romantic relationship. He’ll play the part of a doting boyfriend well enough, but that isn’t really a healthy relationship because in reality, he is closed off from you. Cater would have issues with being open about his feelings with his partner, and he might just fixate more on MagiCam as a means of escaping. The romance, much like his cheery personality, would be superficial at best. He needs to learn to be more trusting of others, and to put the phone down and be honest with himself for once.

If you are interested in a piece that integrates both aspects of Cater--the superficial and the deeper side to him--in the context of a romance, I would recommend reading Shine Like a Diamond. I feel that it is a decent glimpse into his many faces and it would help people to appreciate his character a little more!
