Fun fact: If you are mixing colours from the perspective that the three primaries are Red, Blue and Yellow, then you're gonna have a bad time with muddy colours. This is because Red and Blue are secondary colours (colours that can be mixed using the three primaries).

Try working from a Magenta, Cyan, and Yellow base.

The latter list is made from pigments that can not be mixed using other paints. You therefore get more vibrancy in your colour palette.

Blue for example is Cyan mixed with a little Magenta.

Red is Magenta mixed with Yellow.

Green is Cyan mixed with Yellow.

White and either Black or Payne's Grey can be used to change hue and saturation. So lighter, darker, bright, and dull.

Then you can graduate to what constitutes a warm blue vs a cool blue (simply ratios of the mixed primaries).
