I had to post this scene like this because I'm obsessed with Toby Stephens and Louise Barnes here, they did a fantastic job in a very important moment because, without yet revealing to us exactly what happened, we see for the first time the true motivation behind Flint's actions so far.

Similar to Eleanor, Miranda is a woman who has lived in the privilege that money has provided her and I love her dearly but Flint is right here. He doesn't come from a wealthy family and has spent his life ignoring his origins and his desires to fit into society. He has been good at his job, has done everything asked of him and has kept any indiscretions hidden.

And it has not been enough.

Miranda has the opportunity to be happy in that society but Flint does not because it would mean denying who he is again and ignoring what was done to the person he has loved most in his life, a person who was the same as him.

Flint is not the right leader for the cause because revenge is his driving force (that's why Madi's future introduction is so important, she is the leader Flint is not capable of being) but he is right: apologizing is not enough, apologizing is making them believe they are right when they are wrong and earning his right to exist requires a much more drastic action.

1) They're two sides of the same coin. They have incredible chemistry. Each was willing to sacrifice their life for the other like two weeks after they met. Arthur asked Merlin to hold him as he died. Merlin waited a thousand years for Arthur to return. They have insane codependency and they're both morally gray. 2) the entire show is built on their relationship. they start as the prince and the servant who cannot stop insulting each other, but by the end arthur is the person merlin has spent years protecting, lying for, sacrificing for, and quietly shaping into the king he believes he can become.

merlin’s destiny is to protect arthur, but the show never lets it feel like some detached prophecy job. he loves him. he saves him over and over, risks his life, hides the biggest part of himself, and still stays by arthur’s side even when arthur is rude, oblivious, or impossible. arthur, meanwhile, clearly comes to rely on merlin in a way he doesn’t fully understand until the end. he teases him constantly, but he also trusts him, notices when he’s gone, and wants him there.

the finale basically says the quiet part out loud. arthur finds out merlin has magic, and after the shock and anger, what matters most is that merlin has always been there. “just hold me” and “thank you” are devastating because arthur finally sees the whole truth too late.

i know the show had arthur/gwen in canon, but arthur/merlin is the relationship the whole series keeps returning to. even the producer called the finale a love story between
