As pointed out by this tweet, it is important to remember all black lives, not just those in the first world, as we try to shift our judgements at this time.
A bit of clarification. Consider person A, who is black and from the US. You believe they shouldn't be discriminated against because of their skin colour right?
Consider person B, who is black and from a country in Africa. You believe they shouldn't be discriminated against because of their skin colour right?
Check how you're judging people based on attributes outside of their control.

Black lives should always matter.
I was shocked to hear of the killing of George Floyd at the hands of a white policeman in America. I have been even more shocked to watch the inaction of those with the power to prevent such cruelties. The response of the US president has been sickening and those within the state have simply not done enough to ensure that justice can be carried out.
While I am glad to see the traction this has gained online, I am hopeful that a genuine change will come from this in the real world. I personally will be making a conscious effort to amplify black voices, black writing and literature, black art, black businesses, contacting my local government, signing and spreading petitions, boosting funds that desperately need money. I agree with this post on instagram that blacking out in solidarity is not as effective and even hinders those trying to spread useful online resources.
Some important links:
Justice for George Floyd petition. While the police officers involved have been fired, only one has currently been charged. Supporting this petition pressures the Minnosota mayor to do more.
Justice for George Floyd
UK government petition. Pressuring our own government to condemn and prevent the use of excessive police force against protestors using UK-manufactured equipment.
Suspend UK export of tear gas, rubber bullets and riot shields to USA
DPOCA statement. A fantastic address of the current events in the US, racism in the UK, with links to donation points if you can afford to.
Hi guys I hope everyone is staying safe and is as okay as they can be in light recent events. It has taken a second for DPOCA to release a s
2011 England riots. While I was young when this happened I do have memories of the news coverage. These riots were in response to the death of Mark Duggan who was shot by police and I believe there are many comparisons to be made to current US riots. Mainly, police brutality is an ongoing, worldwide issue. We must be careful not to let it and racism persist when the online hype dies down.

LGBT people, long frustrated by police brutality, finally fighting back. trans women of colour and gender non-conforming lesbians, were some of the key people involved in the act of resistance, including Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Stormé DeLarverie.

viewing queer identities as âthis is the label that makes me happy and feels most accurate nowâ rather than âthis is who I am, was, and always will beâ will definitely take the pressure off, friends. changing your mind is proof that you have one.
