Jessica couldn’t stop herself from raising her eyebrows at his introduction, having not expected the conversation to continue. Composing herself, she nodded sharply. “Jessica Jones.” What else was she supposed to add? “… Guess our parents loved alliteration.” It was meant to be a joke, but Jess only regretted it. Mentioning them only made her think about them again.
The comment made Peter chuckle, not having noticed it himself. "Yeah, yeah I guess they did." Jessica's expression didn't match the humour, though, and he glanced at her with curiosity, wondering if he'd caught her at a bad time. "Well, at least JJ is a better abbreviation than PP. Suddenly I'm glad that the assholes at school didn't catch onto that one. — 'You sure you're alright?"
"It's not about faith, I mean..." She waved a hand at him, disagreeing. "I couldn't even fight an alien. I mean, I don't think I could. Maybe like one or two, but that's it." Though despite the odd choice of topic, Annie found the train of thought endearing, especially at mention of alien ants. She gave a short chuckle before sighing in defeat. "Alright, well if we're talking alien ants, then you've got a good chance. I'll give you that."
Picking up her smoothie again, Annie frowned for a moment, wondering how they'd become sidetracked. "Why are you even thinking about this? Did you fall asleep reading those apocalypse comics again?"
"Oh come on," Peter tutted, dismissing her statement with a shake of his head. He'd seen Annie in action, he knew how gifted she was. It was a ridiculous hypothetical they were discussing, but Peter still had every faith in her. "You could blind a whole army in a second, don't sell yourself short. Those aliens wouldn't even know what hit 'em. You could take out at least ten, even if they were giant killer ant ones."
Peter couldn't admit why he'd followed this peculiar train of thought, and that made him feel guilty, as he was still searching for the right time to reveal his hidden identity to Annie. His hesitance didn't stem from a concern of being judged, or a lack of understanding on her part, considering she had abilities of her own. It stemmed from a fear of endangerment. Every person who knew was another person at risk. Gwen and Jasper knowing was worrisome enough, it made them targets. Peter was also very aware that if he told Annie he spent most nights out in the outskirts, hunting mutts and the living dead, she'd want to help. He couldn't allow that, whether she was capable of protecting herself or not. It was a heavy lie to keep, even if it was a well intentioned one. So instead, for now, he settled for another version of the truth, but it was the truth all the same. "No, no. I didn't. I don't think I slept at all last night, actually. 'Maybe that's why." He paused, feeling sheepish. "I can't sleep, 'cause every time I try, I keep thinking about you. I can't stop. You're on my mind all the time."
“Na, it was all a dream.” He rolled his eyes at the comment, shaking his head as if the man were an idiot. Obviously, he could move that fast — he just had. His frown only grew when the stranger recounted his name. Pietro was fairly certain they hadn’t met before, but perhaps he just hadn’t cared enough to remember. The explanation, however, finally followed. “Gwen,” he repeated as he chewed on the chocolate, expression lightening now that he understood. “Ova, I know her. But she is.. friend of you? She is very clever. How can she put up with you?”
Luckily for Peter, he was well versed in sarcasm, so didn't take Pietro's comments too harshly. Although, admittedly, they felt a little unjustified, considering they'd only just met. Perhaps drawing fast conclusions on acquaintances was a part of Pietro's gift. His speed was mental, as well as physical. Peter was eager to find out more, always desperate for knowledge, so remained polite in his response, hoping to crack what he believed to simply be a tough exterior. "She is, she's the smartest person I know, and my best friend. Well — one of 'em. The other is a guy named... it's not important. Gwen and I have been best buds since school, we were lab partners. 'Don't know why she puts up with me, you'd have to ask her that. Probably 'cause I'm clever too."
