Related to last anon - how do pokémon that can learn explosion moves survive afterwards? Do they do the explosion outside their actual bodies domehow?

explosion is just the name we give to the move because it causes a huge expulsion of energy. it's not actually "exploding" the pokemon itself. of course, the way physics works, the tremendous burst of energy goes out in all directions, including back at the user. that's the reason why a pokemon faints after using it.

using explosion shouldn't cause permanent damage to a pokemon unless it's extremely weak or sick. however, it's a tactic that wild pokemon typically only resort to in life-or-death situations where they think that injuring themselves is worth the risk to ensure survival. as a result, there's a lot of debate as to whether it's ethical to use it in captive pokemon battles, since it's both physically and emotionally stressful for a pokemon to use.

of course. you can always just go up and ask someone if they want to battle personally, no one really considers that out-of-standard anymore.
