@qarisi
Happy TDOV, fellow friends...
Qarisi materialized on Banjuna, behind a cluster of buildings in Dylaat. She slithered out to the main road and followed @sovannsnek ’s aether trail to find her.
“…It actually was on Ravnica. I fled and immediately sent the hawk to you.”
Qarisi playfully splashed water at her daughter with a whip of her tail. “Hoping mommy would save you from the angry naga? I find it hard to believe there’s another naga living in my district that I’ve never heard about.”
“Hey. I can handle myself. It was just a matter of continuing my search. And it wasn’t actually immediately. It’s a figure of speech.” Sovann stretches. “How did you end up in Ravnica anyway?”
Qarisi looked around warily before leaning in. “How much do you know about Nicol Bolas?”
“Whomst?” Sovann shrugs. “The name sounds that of an asshole’s though.”
Qarisi hoped for once that her daughter wasn’t lying to her. “Bolas is an ancient being, a dragon, one of the greatest evils in the Multiverse.”
“Millennia ago, he laid waste to Tarkir, bringing the dragons there low enough to be driven extinct–not that it seems to matter now.”
“When I was an infant, he came to my world. He slaughtered our gods, rewrote our religion to worship him, and then eradicated everyone old enough to know differently. I killed everyone I knew in his name. Once I learned the truth about him on Tarkir, I made it my life’s work to study him, find his flaws, and bring him down for what he did to Amonkhet.”
“It sounds like the only good thing he’s done is freeing Tarkir from the tyranny of the dragons. But then why would a dragon turn on his own kind?” Sovann bristles a bit. “From what you tell me it seems he destroys for his own pleasure. For the very sake of destruction.”
She falls silent for a moment. “I’m sorry he caused Amonkhet to become what it was. What it is now.”
“Dragons only love themselves. They fight like assassins over the smallest slight to their ego or territory. I can’t imagine why Bolas didn’t conquer Tarkir like he did Amonkhet.”
“I feel like we’ve gotten off-track. Did you have other questions?”
“Uh, not really. I just needed some time to think.” Sovann dips lower into the water. “Wait, no. I do have one more question. Would you care to show me Ibis Investigations?’
“Of course! Have another mystery to pursue?”
“Not really. I just don’t know what to do about…” She waves her arms. “Well, life. So getting to know how you handle things seems like a good place to start.”
“Ha! So you want to learn from the best, I see!” She hauls herself out of the water and starts the arduous process of toweling off. “I’m sure I can teach you a thing or two.”
My main girl is Qarisi, a 53-yo trans naga lady from Amonkhet who sparked after surviving her Trial of Zeal. She's big and buff and has negative chill. She hates Bolas and spent most of her life studying his history and weaknesses so she can be there when he dies, and is going to be very conflicted when she finds out he's showing up at her house real soon. On the one hand, (ง•̀<•́)ง but on the other hand, the best way to survive Bolas is to be two planes away from wherever he is...
Qarisi is rad. She should meet Vaset someday they’d probably have some shit to talk about.

“I did say no sticking points. Please tell me the truth, Qarisi. I’ve spent so much of my life lying and deceiving to fall for it.”
Qarisi glanced up, equally incensed and embarrassed. After struggling with words for a moment, she looked back down and mumbled, “…I took a wrong turn trying to get to Kamigawa and didn’t realize it for two weeks.”
“Oh.” Sovann falls silent for a moment. “Did you know how many people did I ask about my mother before finding you? You’d stop being embarrassed if you did.”
She perked up. “Oh really? Wait, is that how you met Pythes! Ahahaha!”
“…Among other people, yeah.”
“Are you blind? He has far too much skin to be your father.”
“In my defense I had no idea how naga from Amonkhet looked like.”
“He doesn’t even have a hood! What other potential doppelgangers do I have out and about? If you mistook me for an orochi, I swear!”
“No idea what that is.” Sovann falls silent and, after a bit, says quietly: “I did find a lady running a casino. She was nice enough until I commented on her age.”
“And here I thought you knew how to mind your tongue... Wait, what plane was she on? I don’t know many worlds that can support that kind of business other than Ravnica.”

Sovann was coiled behind a building, looking towards the springs. She’s deep in thought and extremely still.
Qarisi pulls up behind her daughter, debating whether to speak or not. She remembered she came here to unwind before continuing the argument, and slithers right on by, heading for the baths. She glances back to see how Sovann reacts.
Sovann doesn’t react at all. She keeps staring at the spring.
Qarisi keeps going. She’ll talk when she’s ready.
Half an hour after Qarisi enters the baths, Sovann shakes herself back. She slowly slithers into the spring herself, trying to unwind but clearly still tense.
“Qarisi… I’m sorry for snapping at you. It’s just… Every experience I’ve had with humans has been terrible. And it’s been drilled into everyone back home that naga are superior.” She sighs and sinks deeper. “Sukarto was the only one who didn’t.”
“Then you should have learned more from Sukarto. And you can start making up the difference now. Because I don’t want this to be a sticking point in our relationship.”
“I don’t want to have a sticking point in our relationship. I’ve been alone for far too long to be stumped by something as stupid as humans. Listen, I still think they’re revolting hairless monkeys, but I promise I won’t treat then as the Sultai do. Is that fair?”
Qarisi sighed. “It’s a start. and I’ll try not to needle you about it too much.”
“Thank you.” She manages to relax for a while. “So how did you discover Banjuna?”
Qarisi looks down at the water bashfully for a few seconds. “Well, I was hired to find and kill a thief from the Infinite Consortium who’d swiped some blessed relics from Emeria on Zendikar. Little Nezumi whelp named... Abet. She led me on a long and rewarding chase around the Multiverse, the best game of naga and mouse i’ve ever played. It ended here about two levels up... just her and me and a hot spring, alone...”
