Enabling copy/paste between host and guest on VirtualBox

You may find that you are unable to copy or past from your host to guest or vice versa. To resolve this issue, you need to configure some settings on the Virtual Box application:

Step 1: Open Virtual Box and select the guest or virtual image you would like to enable this functionality on

Step 2: On the toolbar, select SETTINGS -> GENERAL -> ADVANCED

Step 3: You will notice an option titled "Shared Clipboard" Select the the "Bidirectional" option

Step 4: Click on OK Restart VM (guest)

The copy/paste functionality should now work :)

Installing older version of firefox on ubuntu 11

You might find that your selenium automation won't work on later versions of Firefox. Downgrading to an earlier version of Firefox can be problematic due to it's automatic update feature.

Here's an easy way to install an early version of the browser and as well as prevent it from automatically updating in future:

Step 1: Download the version of Firefox from here:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

Step 2: Make sure the firefox-3.6.17.tar.bz2 is saved in the Download directory of Ubuntu and follow these steps: cd ~/Downloads/

tar xjf firefox-3.6.17.tar.bz2

sudo rm -r /opt/firefox

sudo mv firefox /opt/firefox

sudo mv /usr/bin/firefox /usr/bin/firefox-old

sudo ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefox

- Now when you open Firefox it should be Firefox 3.6.17 instead of Firefox 4

Step 3: Next you need to stop Firefox from automatic updating:

On the Firefox Taskbar Edit > Preferences > Advanced and uncheck the update boxes

Step 4: You need to go in to the Ubuntu Synaptic Package Manager and stop it from updating Firefox (Firefox will still be listed as Firefox 4 this is normal)

On the Synaptic Packager Manager search and select firefox then on the Taskbar Package > Lock Version

The same needs to be done with firefox-gnome-support and firefox-globalmenu (if installed)

NOTE: Do not uninstall the default Ubuntu Firefox 4 as it will corrupt the Firefox 3.6.17 Launcher

Bypass Invalid SSL certificate errors when running selenium on test environments

If your selenium tests fails because you test environment does not have a valid SSL certificate then you can install an add-on on your FireFox browser that will bypass these errors

The add-on is called MitM-Me and will work with FireFox 3.5 or later

NOTE: If you use a separate FireFox profile to run your tests on, then make sure you install MitM-Me on that profile.

Cloning a VM that already has a registered UUID in Virtual Box

In VirtualBox you will find that you cannot clone a VM that already has a registered UUID. You would probably see an error like this: "VBoxManage.exe: error: Cannot register the hard disk 'C:\VMs\MyVM.vdi' {601b44ed-a301-45a7-8b17-9b2185040a1e} because a hard disk 'C:\VMs\MyVM1.vdi' with UUID {601b44ed-a301-45a7-8b17-9b2185040a1e} already exists" Unfortunately the UUID remains embedded in the copied VM image and does not allow you to create the new VM in the same computer But there is a command that you can run to solve this. It basically changes the UUID and uses the copied VM image as a new VM:

Open your terminal or commad prompt and run this: VBoxManage internalcommands sethduuid "<insert path to where your image is located>" e.g. VBoxManage internalcommands sethduuid "C:\VMs\MyVM1.vdi"

Once you run this, you get an output similar to this: UUID changed to: 0156199f-6e83-4cd6-97b7-c9e24d9cd26d

And thats it, your cloned image should now be registered and run without any issues

Disable Automatic Delivery of IE9

Microsoft distributes Windows Internet Explorer 9 as a high-priority update through Automatic Updates for Windows Vista SP2 for x64 and x86, Windows Server 2008 SP2 for x64 and x86, Windows 7 x86 RTM and higher and Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM and higher for x64. This Blocker Toolkit is intended for organizations that would like to block automatic delivery of Internet Explorer 9 to machines in environments where Automatic Updates is enabled. On your windows environment or virtual machine download the toolkit from HERE After it has been downloaded, follow these steps:

Click on the link to download the package and select ‘Run’ or ‘Open’. You will be asked to accept the end-user license agreement (EULA) before you gain access to the package contents. The package contains 4 different files.

Pick a location where you would like to place the 4 files above by clicking on ‘Browse’. Once you have specified the location to place the extracted files, click ‘OK’.

Launch an elevated Command Prompt by navigating to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> and then right click on “Command Prompt” and select “Run as Administrator”. Type “CD” followed by the path to where you have extracted the 4 files in step 2 above.

In the Command Prompt, type “ie9_blocker.cmd /B” and hit Enter to set the blocker on the machine.

You will see confirmation in the Command Prompt: “Blocking deployment of Internet Explorer 9 on the local machine. The operation completed successfully.” You can now close the Command Prompt window.
