summer took the hot cup of tea in her hands, the warmth radiating from her hands up to her arms. she looked down at the cup of tea, bobbing the teabag up and down into the water as she listened to cassia speak. truly, summer couldn’t understand how someone so sweet had such a darkness inside of them. it scared her a little, to think about what cassia was capable of, or what could happen to her. for a while, summer had just assumed she was a witch of sorts, until she was able to learn more about her.
❝ i think that there’s comfort in the darkness, sometimes. when you need it. ❞ summer offered up, unsure of what to say as her head lay on her shoulder. ❝ sometimes my best work comes when i feel the shittiest, ❞ she continued, trying to relate. ❝ but um, i don’t know if that makes sense in this context. if it doesn’t, i’m sorry. but you can always talk to me about stuff. and i always have my art supplies with me if you want to take your mind off things. ❞
IT WAS AN ODD thought, especially taking all their differences into consideration, but if life had turned out differently and cassia’s gift had only been a distant fantasy, she had a feeling she’d be similar to summer. the girl was wise in her carefulness, and she was mindful and open. summer had a heart that was made of gold, but one that hadn’t been put through fires and rearranged. cassia hoped it stayed untouched.
she took a second to let summer’s words seep in. «i think creative minds work like that. melancholy is the greatest muse, isn’t it ? makes everyone feel a bit more dignified. stripped, authentic,» the older thought out loud. there was something so beautifully childish about joy, something light and pure. artists needed to be weighed down. «not that i would really know. i can’t draw a stick figure to save my life.» she chuckled, letting her fingers run down the other’s arm absentmindedly. «i’m here for you too. i hope you know that.»
⤷ blucsidcs:
HER HEAD SHOOK OFF the statement as she smiled. “you’re kidding.” but it didn’t take long for her to figure out she was not. “oh my god you’re not kidding — cass.” her body modeled her mind, shoulders shrugging and eyes searching everywhere and nowhere for an answer. “i don’t even know what to… the cheetah girls! you know, we are sisters, we stand together? we make up one big family though we don’t look the same?” she sang, hoping the tune could reach some trace of familiarity in her mind.
“wow. i’m gonna have to download it later for us to watch. it has such a good story and the vocals, the musical production, raven symone and adrienne bailon in one group singing about sisterhood and female empowerment? god, it was so iconic. we’re watching it. all three movies.” she hadn’t even realized the song had changed to ‘belle’ from beauty in the beast. “oh! this song! — you know you kinda remind me of belle. if we had to tag ourselves as disney princesses, you would be her.“ nelly began counting off on her fingers, "beautiful, smart, sees the good in people, you’re her for sure.”
CASSIA’S EXPRESSION REMAINED BLANK as nelly hopelessly tried to recreate what the older assumed must’ve been the movie in question. she never really had had much of a childhood, but nor had she ever really thought much about it. it had become abundantly clear just over the past few days with her friends just how many inside jokes she was missing out on. she had never really thought she could miss something she didn’t even know.
«you do realize i don’t know who those actresses are, right ? but you had me at sisterhood, nels,» cassia replied after patiently listening to the younger’s excited ramble. it was nice to see her so passionate — that was one of many things cass adored about her. «aw, nelly ! that’s so sweet,» she added as a familiar tune played, and she gave the younger’s nose a playful tap. «i guess that would make you merida. maker of your own destiny and follower of your heart — even when it gets you in trouble. i think that’s one of your best qualities.»
⤷ averrys:
BROWN EYES shift towards the ground as leaves crunched beneath her combat boots. “romantic’s my middle name, cass.” she glanced up at cassia briefly before continuing her game of kicking at fallen leaves and rocks on the dirt floor. occasionally, avery would balance on fallen sticks to see if they’d break beneath her weight. some broke, some remained stubborn. she figured she looked dumb as she kept pausing to break sticks. avery was taken back by cass’s comment, “how do you know they’re not space creatures.” of course, cassia knew more than avery would ever but what harm was there in pushing at her buttons. “they’re dead, right? so get this, they know more than us.” she pointed in her direction, “it’s like this book i read.” she reached down to grab a stick before waving it around her as if she was speaking to a crowd, “spirits talk. like gossip, right?” she then turned promptly with the stick pointed at cassia. “right?” she asks again, a smile gracing her features as so.
THERE WAS SOMETHING RELENTLESS about avery’s blind faith in cassia, but it had ceased to feel smothering a long time ago. the older had learned to find appreciation in it, and with that she had also learned to never question avery and her unconventional beliefs, for who was cassia to judge anyway ? if her best friend said one thing, she was happy to go along with it. «okay, you have my attention,» the medium admitted and looked over to her friend. whilst the theory sounded like a stretch to her, she was far from an expert on extraterrestrial life, or even demons. there was always a good possibility of avery’s words being of substance. «i’m not sure how they talk to each other exactly, but i would assume so. why ?»
⤷ averrys:
CASSIA & AVERY, it was them against the world. there was an undeniable bond between the girls. there was baby steps involved when avery was running to the edge of the world to gather cassia’s attention. the bond remained undeniable. nights spent laid up with one another, with promises shared between the sheets that involved their future and hopeful eyes meeting underneath covers, avery felt at home when she was around cassia. where she went, avery wanted to be there with her; she couldn’t imagine a cassia-less world, nor did she want her mind to wander to that.
“excuse me?” her head snapped to face cassia, taken back by the assumption of the viscious creatures that lurk among the trees. “no, you’re not joking. that’s not a joking smile.” avery pointed out with her finger circling in the air around cassia’s face. “at least, if i die. i’ll be dead with you.” her shoulder nudged hers as she huddled closer to the girl, “i have so many questions for a demon though, if we stay out here. before we get murdered.” she kicked at a few pebbles on the ground, “like are aliens real?” she asked without any trace of humor.
NOTHING IN CASSIA’S LIFE had prepared her for the whirlwind that was avery. she had been a blessing in disguise, an anchor for a drowning girl, and no words in the world could express that sort of gratitude. cass hadn’t known it then, but avery was to become an extension of herself more than just a friend, and no one could ever replace that.
she gave the same smile at avery’s knowing comment, then shrugged. the other girl knew the medium inside out, and it came as no surprise that she could read her so easily — cassia was an open book if one only learned her language. «that’s so romantic,» she cooed in a sarcastic tone. continuing to walk, occasionally letting a hand rest on a tree stem as if she could feel anyone’s presence through them, she gave avery a strange look. «you do know demons aren’t .. space creature, right ? i don’t think they’d know any more than us.»

russet hues peer over from his position on the comfortably sized king bed, body comfortably shifting in his idea of pajamas ( really, just a t-shirt and a pair of sweats. ) “ pizza sounds fine to me. wasn’t really feeling grilled salmon or … lobster anyways. ” he mumbles, eyeing the same menu cassia had been looking at. “ maybe some garlic knots too, i’m starving. ” hand darts to the side table to grab the tv remote and flick on the device, figure sinking into the mattress. “ i’m also so tired i feel like a rock. ” kiernan complains, fingers holding onto his shoulder as he rolls his arm until a loud pop sounds. “ so fucking stiff, i hate that van. ” everyone knew of his distaste for their mode of transportation, and he made sure they never forgot.
“ anything else you want cass ? i was thinking about seeing if i can get some hot towels from the spa… if i wasn’t so tired i’d schedule a massage. ” a look of faux sadness. “ another time i suppose. ”
SHE PULLED OUT HER phone pretty much the second kiernan gave her green light, ready to place their order as he let the buzz of the tv fill the room. whilst the trip had been a fun idea, cass found herself finding comfort in evenings like these — there was something about kiernan she instantly connected with, and that won over any arguments they had ever had.
absentmindedly she stretched out her free left hand to give kier’s shoulder a squeeze, eyes still resting on her phone as she pressed the option for garlic knots. «oh, you poor thing,» she mocked in a friendly tone, glancing over at him with a smile. «maybe we should get you a massage cushion. the only thing i want is for you to be comfortable.» it came off as a joke, but it was not a lie.
⤷ sumstrauss:
summer had one headphone in, just to distract from the eerie silence of the hotel. she couldn’t sleep after a scary movie marathon with nelly. she knew she wasn’t a weenie. she had more balls than finn, at least. she heard a voice call out to her, and she jumped a little, thinking it might’ve been a ghost as she pulled out her one headphone.
summer’s whole body relaxed when she realized it was just cassia. “hey, i’m trying to find a band-aid around here,” she walked over to her and sat right next to her, resting her head on her shoulder right away. she lifted up her index finger to show her. “i was finishing up a scary movie marathon with nelly to prove that i wasn’t a weenie but i picked at this lil piece of cuticle during the last one and now i just. ugh.” she stared at the inconvenience. “anyway. why are you up? i feel like i’m the one who doesn’t sleep, not you…?”
OUT OF EVERYONE THAT had chosen to come along for the trip, cassia found herself admiring summer the most. it took a great amount of bravery to face up to one’s fears, and the oldest knew the kind of courage that had to nestle between a person’s ribs for that. summer was the bravest of them all, and cassia would make sure she knew.
at the girl’s comment, cass took her hand and brought it up to her eyesight to take the damage in. «they probably have some by the reception,» she told her, handing summer her still hot cup of tea, figuring maybe it would bring the girl some piece of mind. «oh, you’d be surprised. it’s hard to fall asleep when you have a foot in a world that’s most active at this time of night. it gets .. it gets loud, sometimes.» cassia smiled reassuringly. «nothing to worry your pretty little head about.»
⤷ blucsidcs:
LETTING OUT A GROAN, she accepted defeat. well… temporary defeat. it was always interesting when nelly found someone just as stubborn as her. and while badgering cassia to allow her to help did come with a bit of amusement, she knew there was a certain point when she had to stop. sometimes words alone weren’t enough, and people had to find themselves in multiple dead ends before simply asking for help. it was then that she would prevail. and eventually, she did.
“oh, so now you want my help?” cocking her head to the side, nelly’s wide eyes were fixed on cassia as snatched her phone from her. “watch, okay?” she displayed the phone screen to her while navigating to spotify, and for a moment, their roles seemed reversed. it was like teaching a kid how to tie their shoes. “and then you open the playlist and press the big green shuffle button.” nelly tapped on it as she explained and suddenly ‘amigas cheetahs’ began playing from the speaker. “oh fuck yes.”
it was amazing how quickly a song could take her into a whole different mood. she gestured a hand toward cassia as she began lip syncing, acting as if it were a serenade. but once the drum beats dropped, her body naturally moved to the rhythm. she looked at cassia with expectant eyes, urging her to join in on the chorus. “—cheetahs, friend’s for life. the rhythm in each other, that’s what keeps us tight!”
CASSIA NEVER FELT LIKE the oldest of the group just because she really was. it had more to do with personality and experience than a number really — she felt like she had lived a hundred lifetimes already, folded like paper into everyone she had encountered, and whilst she wished desperately to just be a normal girl she knew there was no changing who she was. for some reason, even this scenario made her acknowledge how far away she was from the sane world.
she followed nelly’s movements closely, but knew she wouldn’t remember anyway so she let the younger be in charge of this one. it was nice that she took the time anyway, and when an unfamiliar song started playing cassia could only give nelly a confused look. «nope, never saw that one.»

THERE WERE FEW THINGS that finn made the effort to understand. it was a tactic he had learned at a young age, a coping mechanism of sorts to keep his head above water when the seas threatened to pull him under. before shutting his eyes to it all, finn watched desperately as his father was ripped from his life time and time again. each incarceration was another wave that swallowed him, distraught hands reaching for anything that could bring him to the surface. it was a futile effort, one that was always met with more confusion and disappointment than before. he accepted that some answers would only seek to pull him further into the current, into a rip tide against which he never stood a chance. and so he stopped. he stopped trying to understand when he never would, stopped painting pictures in which the details would always remain blurred.
and just like that he wasn’t treading water anymore, but instead he was sitting on the shores, staring at a thrashing, unrelenting world he would never understand. perhaps his newfound reality should’ve made him sad, yet he found comfort in the distance. things ( people, especially ) were temporary. things ( people, especially ) were not meant to be understood. things ( people, especially ) couldn’t hurt him unless he let them, unless he let them close enough. what a fucking cliché.
the search for answers transformed into a desperation to ignore reality. he clung to anything that allowed him to stay in control, to manipulate his surroundings until he found himself in a safe haven of sorts. the library and his research became his outlet. once a passion he shared with his father, finn poured himself deeper and deeper into his research in an attempt to pretend as if his father was still here, that he was still the man he had once called his hero.
unbeknownst to him, his safe haven would soon become a who rather than a where. in the emptiness of the library he found himself shoulder to shoulder with her, one never too far from the other as they trailed down the aisles in search of things neither of them could truly explain. nonetheless, cassia understood. she looked at him and saw a man void of cracks, unaware that it was only because of her that they had been filled.
no matter how high the waves swelled, she was his beacon of light. a single word from cassia soothed him, his mind at ease so long as she was by his side. by the time he had realized what she meant to him it was too late, her name carved into the uncharted territory which was his heart. if only for a moment, he believed he could love her like this forever.
although he was certain about the love, it was the circumstances that he couldn’t sustain. he couldn’t keep her this close only to watch her someday leave, his mind shouting at him to separate himself before he lost her. it was easier this way, or at least that’s what he told himself in order to get through the days. he couldn’t love her how she deserved to be loved, so he would settle for being friends instead.
each endeavor with cassia was a test to see how well finn could mask his feelings. he was used to it with other people, surely, but with cassia it had never been necessary until now. he found it almost awkward, walking behind her through the mansion now as they embarked on yet another adventure together. he squinted as he cast his gaze away from the flashlight, eyes slowly adjusting to the darkness as he surveyed the grand home for any semblance of life — or afterlife, rather. “ well, if you don’t know what we’re looking for, then we’re probably screwed. “ he joked, his quiet laughter falling a bit short. he attempted to cover it up with a small cough, his breath catching for just a moment as cassia’s voice was replaced with the creaking sound. he was rarely frightened, but amazement was a common reaction, especially when in the company of cassia. he followed closely behind as she tried the door, his chest falling as he exhaled in defeat. “ we just have to keep going then, right ? c’mon, it’ll be fine. i’ll stay right next to you. “ he reassured her, his fingers briefly combing through his hair before he turned himself back around, glancing toward cassia to make sure she was coming. “ shine the light this way, maybe. paintings are always somewhere to start. “ he pointed as he began to move across the room, attempting to pull their attention away from the door that he could only hope would open later.
SHE WAS HER OWN nightmares come to haunt her and she had been foolish to leave her door open. she had been young back then when her twin brother passed, and it had left her with a crack for everything that once lived to seep through. it had never once been exciting — it had never once stopped hurting. it was a pain she had begged to make tangible for years and years and years until she had learned to suffer in silence accompanied by voices in her head. what did it matter if she was not going insane if she would tear herself apart regardless ?
she would not sleep. she could not sleep. she could not hear those screams again.
cassia ate less; her cheeks no longer pooled when she smiled. cassia felt less; the whens turned into ifs. it had taken her years to convince herself that whilst she’d never fully come to terms with her strange abilities, she could learn to co-exist within herself and the infinities of people and stories she carried with her. they had taught her gratitude in a new light, but whilst it should’ve made her reach out for the world in an attempt to be something that mattered, the girl grew into herself and found solace in the emptiness. she had ceased to believe she’d ever feel anything real again — that her life was a collage of people she didn’t know and memories that weren’t hers.
the girl never expected anyone to understand something there were no words for, but when that boy had set foot in her universe, her world shook and nothing could stop cassia from falling. it was nothing but a quiet admiration and she could allow that: the glances, the shy smiles, the polite words. she hadn’t been prepared for sinking into him and making a home of his depths, but for the first time she felt she could breathe. she had thought: — this is how my life finally starts. she had thought: — maybe i can love you through the breaking, and maybe you can love me the same. and in the end, it hadn’t been enough.
— i don’t know how to tell you. i keep myself busy, it makes the days pass faster. i work until i don’t find the energy to miss you. i try not to search for you in vacant spaces you used to share with me, try not to think of you in books you read with me, try not to let your name echo like a broken record in my mind. ghosts don’t scare me for they are gone, but you are right here.
loss was an acquaintance and love was the stranger. it was that thought that had made her accept that it was better this way, even when finn’s simple comment of reassurance had her heart beating again. fear was not an emotion she felt readily and he knew: and still. «why ? are you scared ?» she joked in a half-hearted attempt to lighten the mood. nothing was worse than the unspoken awkwardness.
— i don’t know how to tell you. i loved you harder than i hated myself, but i would only hold you back. i have no sunshine, only rain — nothing grows here and i don’t want you in the flood with me. you’re going and going and going and i can’t follow. darling, we were paper thin, and none of us could stop this from crumbling.
there was a fissure down the middle of her chest that she prayed finn would not see. shining her light as instructed, the family portrait it hit sent a shiver down her spine. «this place is very ..» cassia searched for a word, heartbreak settling heavy in her chest, heartbreak for herself and for everyone else. «sad.»
— how to tell you ?
⤷ averrys:
SHE was ecstatic. this entire trip to discover the unbelievable was an exciting measure to the young girl, the emotion tugged at her insides as she tagged along with her best friend. she balanced on a fallen log, arms outstretched at her side as she side eyed the girl beside her, a woman full of intimidating beauty avery once found unapproachable; underneath the intimidating was someone she had instantly found love in, her own person haven of comfort and familiarty, someone who she called her person. cassia is her person.
there was honor in being invited out to go on, for a lack of better words, a calling hunt with cassia - often time she didn’t know what to do but to stare wide eyed and wait for cassia to make her move, avery was a mess of silent support and anxiety but nonetheless, always the excited bean.
she let out a breath she wasn’t aware she was holding, the nerves fell apart with that breath. “i never know what to do when i come along, i feel like if i open up my loud mouth they’ll run and thing we’re unapproachable.” her brown eyes meeting her pair, a quick smile flashed across her face - it came and went; she felt a pinch at her heart but ignored it. “maybe they see the suns out still and don’t want to be discovered. think about it. people are attracted to the moon, even spirits can be moonchildren.” avery jumped down from the log and now fell in step beside her best friend, “come on, maybe if we keep walking we’ll make it a successful trip and even if it doesn’t work out..” she linked her arm through cassia’s, “date night?”
UPON FIRST GLANCE THE two girls seemed to be polar opposites, of different worlds. where cassia was hard and unfeeling, avery softened edges to fit her perfectly, and in return cass had let her leave a mark on her heart where there were only footprints before she had stepped into her life. she had been vulnerable, which was the bravest thing cassia could ever be: and avery had never asked for more than she was willing to give.
that was the story of how cassia qasim became just a little bit more human, holding her best friend’s hand as they turned against the world and made their own path. it was a path she was only willing to walk with her with the knowledge that they’d be safe together.
«moonchildren,» she repeated thoughtfully, for whilst that wasn’t the reason behind supernatural activity at night time it was a nice thought. she looked over at avery and smiled, leading the way with the other girl at her arm. «unless we get eaten by coyotes,» cass added seriously, then beamed again. «joking. if anyone’s killing us it’ll be angry demons. c’mon, let’s go.»
SLEEP CAME SLOWLY TO the restless, and cassia’s soul never seemed to dare so much as a sigh. she had grown used to long nights spent in her own company, just her and the moon and a world able to do what they never could.
cass found herself wandering the hotel hallways in an attempt to tire herself out. she spoke to the young receptionist, a man in his 20s obviously taken aback by his sudden company found in a young female visitor. the girl sweet talked her way into getting a cup tea, then had seated herself in the lobby where soft jazz music was still playing over the speakers. leaning back in her seat, cassia tried to tell her palpitating heart that her anxiety was misplaced, and that was when she saw summer walk past.
«summer,» cass exclaimed, softly yet loud enough to catch her attention. «you okay ?» she patted the vacant spot on the couch as an invite. «trouble falling asleep ?»

THERE WERE MANY THINGS to be said about cassia qasim, many of them nice, some of them unkind — but most of them true. it was undeniable; the fact that she was an odd one in her self-imposed loneliness and that coldness she wore like a cloak. it had made her stubborn to a fault.
it was why she found herself with nelly’s phone in hand after volunteering to go back to the van and put her playlist on shuffle, and it was why she found herself unable to ask the younger girl who was standing next to her just how she performed such a simple task. cassia and technology had never been much of a fit — she was one for old books and parchment paper and latin poetry. yesterday was the first time in months she had checked her email.
nel had probably trudged along with cassia knowing this would happen, and cassia had swatted away her hand when she had attempted to help the first time. the older had to admit defeat as the seconds turned into minutes, but her own pride would surely take offense to it. «fine. i’m 80 years old, you win ! please help me.»

A TIRED POP SONG was playing over the radio when they entered the convenience store, cashier not even bothering to lift his gaze when tommy and cassia entered. the road was tedious on an empty stomach, so whilst the rest of the crew had set out to explore their current stop, the girl had managed to drag tommy with her looking for something edible to keep them all occupied until they got to their destination.
she rummaged the shelves with her gaze, not really being one for snacks except for perhaps the occasional chocolate bar, and in the end it was what she opted for. for safety measures she grabbed a bag of doritos, loaded up on reese’s peanut butter cups, and reached for skittles too — she had a feeling her friends would devour almost anything. «what’s your favorite snack ?» cassia asked tommy when he came into her view. «’myself’ is not a valid answer, by the way.»

SHE HAD FLOPPED DOWN on kiernan’s bed after begging the girls, who were off doing god knew what, to give her a night off. cassia wasn’t of the extroverted kind, and being around so many people no matter how much she adored every individual became draining at some point. that particular evening she only wanted the company of one in particular, and she had sought out his suite without being invited — if he minded she wouldn’t give him the choice anyway.
looking through the extensive list of food items on the room service list, cassia squinted at the text, trying to decipher what exactly had motivated anyone to make snail caviar into its own meal, but the girl soon gave up and rolled over to stare at the ceiling instead. «we should just order pizza,» she chimed in eventually, biting her lower lip. «there’s a domino’s just a few blocks down, i’m pretty sure.» very sure in fact — she had checked her maps app for confirmation just before deciding to bother kiernan.
