Snippet of #Mizong Kao... one of my favourite taolu in our syllabus, slowed down a bit for my beginners to follow. Not the prettiest form maybe... but one with more practical kicks, punches, eye-gouges, nasty Qinna takedowns, elbows and all sorts of great applications to imagine and extrapolate, drill and fight with. Xiao Shaolin. Recorded as a revision aid for my juniors... we spend way too much time sparring and doing pad work for a lot of people to learn a sequence in the 5 - 10 mins a week I try to cram in forms practice! Learning forms is like learning a musical instrument. You really need to practise every day (just 10 mins will do)... you start with the getting everything in the right place at the right time. You get to the end of the piece and then... you 'polish' it... Learn when to pause... when to breathe... when to spring into life and where the fajin should be! You learn the applications, drill them, then imagine them on an opponent as you practise solo. Eventually you have committed the techniques into your muscle memory and you move on having assimilated the physical pattern and the knowledge. You might not be perfect from a performance point of view but you have trained your mind and body some new tricks... and always... chief among them is learning how to LEARN.
