The world
It comes without a doubt that the executioner god should choose the world over a single mortal. After all, he is the one that is meant to quell chaos and keep the peace of the world, let everyone live in peaceful harmony so long as his existence is still around.Â
But what about the man who holds the title of executioner god? What about the man named Susanoo who had forsaken his promise to love all humans equally the moment he realized that he had fallen in love with you?Â
Protecting the world was a heavy responsibility to shoulder but after meeting and falling in love with you, that burden seemed to be lifted by a considerable amount; after all, you were part of this world so protecting the world also meant protecting you alongside the people that he was already meant to protect. How cruel it was to ask him whether you or the world was more important to him, as if he had a choice to begin with.
"I love you," he whispers into the quiet night, holding you close as if you would slip through his fingers like sand if he held you any less tightly. His gaze is so unbearably soft that even the brightest star seems dull in comparison, shying away as it swore to keep the love between you and him a secret that underneath the night sky.
Alas, when the stars fall and the day reappears, when the sun watches over the world like how Amaterasu used to, he has no choice but to let go of the love in his heart and fulfill his godly duties of loving everyone equally.
Every day, he prays that the world would become a peaceful place that would no longer require his protection, one that would no longer have him choose between it or you. Until then, he finds solace in the night with your body that sleeps next to him, wishing that the day would start just a little later so that he could hold you for a little longer.Â

Divine Prophet Susabi
You
Fate was a cruel thing, one that had no rights to hold such a tight grasp over anyone like his teacher had taught himâ which is why Susabi sincerely believes that he would always choose you over the world.Â
For years, he had questioned what fate truly was and when he had finally come across the answer, it only made him more determined to abolish it so every life had the chance to build their lives with the choices they made. He had seen many people fight against fate in order to grasp their future with their own hands and to him, those people were brighter than the stars that lit up the moon sea, sparking a flame of rebellion within him that continued to burn brighter as the world continued to see improvements ever since Orochi went into hiding after the Six Realms Gates opened.Â
Before, if you had asked him whether he would choose between you or the world, he would scoff and ask you to ask him better questions. After all, the answer was obvious to the one who had the ability to prophesied the futureâ if he chose you, you would still perish alongside the world that was about to be destroyed in the near future. Now that that future had been avoided, he could indulge in his selfish desires and say with his full heart that yes, he would choose you over the world, for a world without you would be the same as that prophesied destroyed future.
His fingers brushed over your cheek, a smile appearing on his normally cold face as his heart tickled at the sound of your laughter. Without missing a beat, he picked up your hand and pressed a kiss to the back of your fingers like a knight swearing an oath.Â
"I promise to give you the happiness you deserve."
When he looked up and saw you smiling at him as if he had given you the world, he swore that he would pull the stars down from the sky if you asked him to.Â
Enmusubi
Both
"Having the goddess of love choose between the one she loves and the world that is filled with love? How absurd!"
She would say with a large pout, offended that you would have the audacity to ask such a thing. After all, all mortal relationships were tied by her and that includes yours. If either you or the world were gone then she wouldn't even exist!
âŠ. Okay, that was an exaggeration. She knew better than anyone that if you were gone, the world would still continue to spin and she would still be tying bonds just like any other day. However, she saw no point in choosing when to her, you were the world itself. You were the one that showed her love and made her hopelessly in love with you, the one that strengthened her determination to continue tying bonds if only to let other people find a love as precious as the one she found. So it came as a no brainer that she would do anything in order to keep you and the world running no matter what, if only to let this little piece of love continue existing for just a little longer.Â
She huffed and pointed at you. "Don't you think for even a second that I would ever think of giving you up to anyone or anything! Not. A. Chance!"
For as long as she continued to exist, she would continue to tie and look over everyone's bonds, including yours.Â
Miketsu
The world
As much as she wanted to give you all her love, she knows that the world would always require her assistance more than you.Â
Don't take this as an offenseâ of course she dearly loves you but gods have a duty to help and protect all humans. After all, that is what they were created for and to someone as diligent and hardworking as Miketsu, she will see her duties to the end, even if it means neglecting herself and the people close to her.
However, sometimes, when she has the chance to feel your arms wrapped around her body, a thought comes into her mind. A selfish wish to keep you by her side forever so that no harm would ever come your way, so that she can continue to watch over you even when she has to perform her other duties as the goddess of prosperity. It hurts her heart to imagine that there would be a day when she no longer has the chance to feel your embrace due to your short mortal lifespan and the fact that she is always busy giving prosperity to others doesn't lessen her guilt one bit.Â
Before she had time to process her thoughts, words carelessly slipped out her mouth.Â
"Have you ever thought of becoming a god?"
The moment she feels you tense up is the moment she knew she messed up. "I-I'm sorry, I don't know what came over me! I swear that I never thought about that before and I would never ask you to become one without consulting you first so please don't take my words seriously. If by some chance I had seriously considered it then I wouldn't have asked you so suddenly so pleaseâ"
Your attempts to calm her down fall on deaf ears as she becomes too embarrassed to process anything other than what she had asked you. Suddenly, realization dawns on her: If you became a god, doesn't that mean she wouldn't have to choose between you or all the humans in this world?
Suddenly, she meets your eyes with newfound determination. "If by chance, there was a way to make a human become a god, would you like to become one?"
Jinkougyou isn't the type of person to call people by nicknames but when it comes to you, he always prefers to call you starlight.
To him, you are the love of his life, the light that shines the path of his journey and the warmth that soothes him in the darkest of nights; just like the stars that had accompanied him on his once lonely journey.
To him, you are worth all the good in this world so he steps on another journey to make you the happiest person in the world, to show you how bright you shone in his eyes.
Or, you hold out your hand in front of him and wait to see what he will do

â Even though he approaches you calmly, the thoughts in his head are anything but calm. Why are you standing there while holding out your palm? Do you want something? Did he forget to bring something for you?
â In a moment of panic, he reads your mind and is surprised by what you want, so much so that he couldn't help but giggle a little.
â Without missing a beat, he gently lowers his head to rest on your palm before looking up with a mischievous smirk
"Did I do well, love?"
Jinkougyou
â Jinkougyou lifts a eyebrow, staring at your outstretched palm for a few seconds before walking towards you with a confident smile
â He carefully takes your hand into his, enjoying the brief moment of confusion that crossed your face before he lowered his head to kiss the back of your palm like a prince
â For a moment, you saw a glint in his eyes that meant anything but good. However, before you could say anything, he dropped another kiss on your cheek and whispered:
"Don't think I don't know what you want, starlight."
â Although his mannerisms resembled royalty, the teasing smirk on his face told another story
Bygone Aroma
â He blinks once, then twice before approaching you cautiously as if you were about to hand him a danger object
â His eyes meet yours the moment he stands in front of you, silently asking for hints on what you wanted but when you continue to stare back without answering, an unsettling feeling sinks within him
â After much hesitation, he lifts up your hand and gently places it on his cheek, keeping it in place by covering your hand with his
â He leans into your touch and rubs against your palm, too shy to meet your eyes
In that dream, the hidden mountain welcomed all outsiders, making the formerly peaceful land become a lively country that was well respected by all its neighboring countries. It became infamous for having the most majestic sight at the top of the mountainâ a sea of clouds that floated just above the tip of the ground, giving the illusion that one had ascended to Takamagahara.Â
Fukengaku knows that this is a dream.Â
He knows that the clouds in the sky could never touch any land that belonged to this mountain, nor can any sight be as beautiful as the smile she gave him in every life that they had the chance to meet in.Â
Fukengaku doesnât want to dream.Â
For it was too painful to have these sort of hopeful dreams that can never manifest into reality. He knows that the moment he wakes up, all that is waiting for him is a small village that needs his help and a mountain that has erased its existence from the world.Â

The cold bed under his hands and the tears that drip down his cheeks tell him so.

if someone gifts an adeptus with flowers, it means you are proposing to them, and if they take it, it means they accept the proposal. unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who you ask), you werenât aware of such a custom. or â xiao thinks youâre married, but you just thought flowers would look nice on him.

It started with a walk on the road as an acquaintance accompanied you.
Thereâd been a wild flower by the side, with white and lilac petals that youâd thought, rather presumptuously, would suit the dour faced adeptus beside you. So, you plucked it and impulsively handed it to him, a smile on your face and a shocked one on his.
His fingers closed around the flowerâs stem, the stern lines of his face softening as he gazed at the tiny petals that glittered in the sun.
Youâve never been rid of him since.
Your friend Xiao could be described as protective at best and possessive at worst. Itâs not a bad thing, of course! Caring for a friend is always a good thing in your books, but sometimes, you think he takes the word âcaringâ to an almost extreme degree.
Take, for instance, now.
âXiao?â
He hums from his spot on the sill of your window, not even sitting, no, heâs crouched on it, balanced on the thin ledge at the tips of his toes and keeping his eyes (which oddly glowed like a catâs) peeled for any danger. Like this, he almost looks like a bird perched on a branch.
You let out an awkward laugh. âYou know, I appreciate you doing this for me, keeping me safe and all, but I think I can spend the night on my own safely.â
His head whips to you so fast you almost feared heâd get neck cramps, an expression of surprise and⊠hurt? on his face.
âYou⊠donât want me here?â
Youâve never backtracked so fast in your life. âNo! I mean, yesâbut not in the way youâre thinking!â
He looks forlorn now, stepping down the windowsill and shoulders hunched in a similar manner to that of a cat pulling its ears down its head. âIs this what the Traveler meant by sleeping on the couch?â
Youâre not sure what to do, but it seems like he wants to sleep on the couch? Puzzled, you smile encouragingly even though you donât quite understand his words. âEr, if you want to sleep on the couch, youâre welcome to do so?â
His face falls.

âAnd, I donât know, he just became allâsad? Just, I felt so bad for basically kicking him out of my room, and now that Iâm thinking more on it, I shouldâve just offered to let him sleep beside me. Like a, um, a sleepover!â
Thereâs a distinctly bashful look on your face and, oh god, youâre drawing little circles on the table with your finger, an almost dreamy glint in your eyes.
Sweet Jesus that doesnât exist in this world, Lumine is going to barf.
She slams her hands on the table, startling you in the process as she leans down and says with an exasperated face, âHave you considered that maybe you actually like him and heââ
âWhat?!â you squawk, mouth open in disbelief and a mortified look contorting your features. âThatâsâdonât say such things, Lumi!â
She drops back down her chair, leveling you with a look that basically said, are you for real right now?
âItâs written all over your faceââ
You quickly slap both hands on your cheeks, turning your head away. âI donât like him! How could I ever⊠heâs an adeptus and IâŠâ
âAnd you made an adeptus sleep on your couch,â Lumine deadpans.
She can feel the way your face burned at the reminder. You slump over the table, burying your head in your arms and bemoaning your decision. âI didnât mean to disrespect himâŠâ
âOh, Iâm sure disrespect was the farthest thing you did to him,â she mutters beneath her breath. Broke his heart, shattered his hopes and dreams, devastated himâLumine can name a few more.
But then, you suddenly straighten up, determination lining your face. Thereâs a look in your eyes that tells Lumine she should probably stop you from doing whatever idiotic thingâhowever in good faith it might beâthat youâre about to do.
âI should give him some flowers as an apology. He always gets so⊠not exactly happy butâwarm, thatâs it. He feels warmer whenever I give him flowers.â You smile, reminiscing on whatever moments you had with him. You stand up, looking down at the empty plates all over the table before looking at her apologetically. âIâm sorry, could you foot the bill this time?â
Lumine sighs. Sheâs still got money from the last commission Ningguang made her do, so she supposes she can do it. Just this once. âFine, but youâre paying for our next outing!â
You beam, thanking her before running to the nearest flower shop or wherever it is youâre going to be getting those flowers from.
âMake sure to let him sleep on your bed next time!â Lumine yells to your retreating back, ignoring the strange, almost scandalized, looks from nearby patrons.

You find him at your house, completely ignoring how strange it is that a friend has complete access to your house including a spare key and extra clothes on the closet just for him. Itâs simply become the norm, is all. And heâs a goodâyou donât quite know what to call him, roommate? youâll settle for friendâfriend, helping you with the chores and often accompanying you to the market when you need new groceriesâbut only during the early mornings, of course. You know how much he dislikes crowds.
âIâm home!â
The response comes immediate and, judging by the direction, it came from the kitchen, âWelcome home.â
The large bouquet of glaze lilies interspersed with roses and qingxin flowers is heavy on your arms as you walked to the kitchen. Xiao is there, a broom in hand which he sets aside once he sees you and what youâre carrying.
âHere!â You grin, extending the bouquet forward and into his arms.
He accepts it, a flush to his cheeks and looking distinctly flustered by the gift. âI⊠thank you.â
âItâs an apology.â
His eyes snap to yours, iridescent gold piercing through you. Thereâs something almost vulnerable in the way heâs gazing at you, hands tightening around the flowers.
You fiddle with your fingers. âWell, I wanted to say sorry for making you sleep on the couch. If youâd like, you can sleep beside me tonight.â
Something in him relaxes, tension bleeding out of his posture as he smiles, small and near unnoticeable to anyone who didnât know him so well.
For some reason, the sight of it makes your heart leap.
Lumineâs words repeat in your mind.
Have you considered that maybe you actually like him?
No, you think with dread, absolutely not.

âYes,â Hu Tao crows in delight, âYouâre absolutely in love!â
âSee, thatâs what I tried to say yesterday, but nooo. Oh, Lumi, Xiao is just a friend,â Lumine grouches, imitating your voice and utterly failing because while she may be strong enough to fight monsters and gods, that girl has absolutely no talent when it comes to mimicking.
Your palms cover your face that feels warm to touch. âI do not sound like that. And itâs true, we really are just friends!â
âOf course, because friends do things like living together and sleeping on the same bed and holding handsââ You open your mouth to protest, but Hu Tao doesnât let you interrupt, ââdonât deny it! I saw you last week near Liuli Pavilion, and he was holding your hand and carrying a bag of food!â
âHeâs just really helpful! Heâs an adeptus,â you argue, though it sounds weak even to your own ears.
âAnd do all adepti live with a human, do they sleep with themââ
âYou make it sound so lewd, Lumi!â
ââdo they hold their hands and go grocery shopping at five in the morning with them?â Lumine pierces you with those honey gold eyes of hers. âDid you know I barely have anything to do in the Adventurerâs Guild here in Liyue besides babysitting and errands because someoneânamely, an adeptus who coincidentally goes by the name Xiaoâkeeps killing all the monsters within the area?â
Hu Tao cackles. âHe always asks about you whenever I encounter him at Wuwang Hill.â
You level her with an incredulous look. âWhat were you even doing there?â
âHiding bodies, duh!â At your horrified look, she winks. âJust kidding!â
You shake off Hu Taoâs laughter and pinch your lips together. âLook, itâsâweâre just friends. Thatâs all there is to it.â
Lumine huffs, âYeah, sure, because friends like you two give each other flowers everyday. How does your house still have space in it for more?â
You wouldâve refuted her words, wouldâve argued that no, you donât give each other flowers everyday, just on a regular basisâbut Hu Taoâs sudden silence concerned you more than what Lumine said. The funeral director turns her head to you with wide eyes.
âYou gave him flowers?â she asks, an odd tone to her voice.
Your brows furrow at her uncharacteristic seriousness. âUm, yes? I do it all the time.â
She leapt forward, grabbing your shoulders and lips twitching into something you could almost call glee. âAnd he accepted it?â
âWhy wouldnât he?â
Hu Tao lets go of your shoulders to tilt her head back and laugh. Not the nice little giggles she does after a successful prank, no, this is more manic. The kind that wouldnât make you think, oh how sweet, but instead makes you think, oh this girl belongs in a facility.
Even Lumine seems confused at her reaction, joining you in watching her like sheâs just grown two heads. Hu Tao takes one look at both of your expressions and dissolves into another fit of laughter.
âOh, dear. And you donât even know what it means!â she says in between laughs.
Lumine, having had enough of being in the dark, grabs Hu Taoâs face with both hands and forces her to look at her in the eye. âWhat does it mean?â
Hu Tao grins, gaze darting to you. âWhen you give an adeptus flowers, it means youâre proposing to them.â
You and Lumine gape, understanding dawning on your heads, though thereâs horror on your part at what it could mean.
But Hu Tao doesnât stop there, âAnd if they take itâŠâ
You await her next words with bated breath, Lumine seemingly on the edge of her seat as well.
ââŠIt means they accept your proposal.â
Lumineâs screech of delight at this newfound information drowns out the metaphorical sound of your world falling apart and being built anew.

You come home in a daze, eyes blankly staring ahead and unaware of your surroundings until you blink, and suddenly, youâre sitting at the dining table, a plate of steaming shrimp balls being placed in front of you.
Xiao crouches by your chair, examining your face with worried eyes. âAre you well?â
Your throat shrivels up. All the words and arguments youâd been planning to say earlier dying on your tongue. So, instead, you nod. He doesnât outwardly look relieved, but the softness in his touch belies his care as he places a single stemmed qingxin flower on your palm.
Itâs still fresh, you notice, dew gathering on the petals and the scent still present.
Xiao sits on the chair opposite yours, looking at anything and anywhere but your eyes. âI plucked it from the highest mountains of Jueyun Karst, blessed by Cloud Retainer and said to ward away unwanted dreams.â
You stare down at it, at the white petals that feel soft against the pads of your fingers, heart beating out of your chest and hands clammy and breaths labored, a pleasant twist to your gut as you realized that heâd gone out of his way to climb a mountain and have it blessed by an adeptus just to give it to you. Thereâs being friends, handing each other flowers they saw on the road or bought at a shop, and then, thereâs this.
Your mouth feels dry, your chest feels full, and thereâs something on the tip of your tongue begging to be let out.
âXiao,â you start, finally gaining the courage to look up and meet his eyes. âWhat are we?â
His lips part, eyes widening the slightest amount that tells you heâs unsure what brought this question on and how to answer it.
You shake your head. âNever mind. Just tell me thisâare we⊠engaged?â
At this, Xiao seems to relax. âNo.â
You barely have the chance to feel a mix of relief and disappointment, though why youâd feel disappointment at having proof that you and Xiao really are just friendsâ
He smiles, a small one but no less brighter for it. âWe are married, arenât we?â
And oh.
Oh.
Itâs not until now, with the confirmation of everything you dreaded (everything youâd hoped and wanted and yearned for desperately) that you realize how much youâve longed for something more with himâhow much youâve longed for him.
âXiao,â you say, eyes crinkling at the corners and cheeks aching with the intensity of your smile, âI love you.â
He startles, blinking up at you with wide eyes, red creeping up his cheeks, but before he can say anything you know heâs not quite prepared to say yet, you continue, still a little indignant at discovering youâd been married without a clue.
