Headcanon: Monster-in-law potential
Emma is ten thousand percent the type of mother who truly believes no one will ever be good enough for her children. Which kind of pre-disposes her to hate anyone they date/bring home.
Thankfully she has Sean to temper her. He is the only thing that stands between her and full on monster-in-law mode.
“He’s just exceedingly…good.” He said it like it was the absolute worst thing someone could be. “Mira really likes him, God knows why. And if he was actually trying to control her, I would have knocked out those perfect teeth.”
It would have been a lot easier if James wasn’t such a nice guy. And maybe that’s what rankled Callum the most. That James Rogers was so…perfect.
Emma had learned long ago that there were two types of good. One was simply that. Good. The other was extremely annoying and cloying. It seemed James Rogers was the second type. As was the Captain himself. Steve Rogers was the type of man that had wholesomeness oozing from his pores. Horrid really.
“Good. Because no woman should ever allow herself to be controlled by a man. It’s a lesson I’m still working on teaching your sister.” Not that she was going to get into that now. No. She wasn’t sure which was worse -- Sandra and the LeBeau boy or Nathan and the Drake girl. “As for Mira...any hope it’s a phase? That he’s just another one of her passing infatuations? Like that...who was that boy bander she dated for a while? The British one?”
Did they think of her, she wonders? Were any one of them psionically crying out to her from across the void, as they were pulled, kicking and screaming, to another plane of existence? Who among them cursed her—for having abandoned them in their darkest hour? Who blamed her, as she blames herself?
All of you … please forgive me. Forgive me, because I know … I never will. (via xemmafrostx-archive)
James wasn’t completely to blame for the situation. Callum didn’t make things easier with his poking and prodding at the young avenger. Because he KNEW that there was nothing Rogers could do about it. But it had gotten to be too much for him and he had cracked. Though he probably wouldn’t admit to his mother that he was part of the problem.
“He doesn’t like that Mira is friends with me and Lina.” They were bad influences and all that.
He didn’t have to admit it; his mother knew. Not because of her mutant abilities, but because she was a mother. And he was a twenty-something boy with more money than he knew what to do with and too much time on his hands. He reminded her of herself in that way. Her, Adrienne, Christian...none of them had been model citizens in their younger years. She still wasn’t. Though she was trying.
She had come a long way since her days in the Hellfire Club.
So while she had no doubt her son was just as to blame as James, she was going to do what all mothers did and pretend he was blameless. “Well that’s just ridiculous. You and Lina were part of Mira’s circle long before he came along.” Or rather before they began dating. James had been in Mira’s life practically since the beginning. The two just hadn’t gotten on all that well until lately.
“Sounds a bit controlling if you ask me.”

That wasn’t the point. It didn’t matter that ‘the Junior Boy Scout’ as her son called him hadn’t actually hurt Callum; what mattered was that he intended to. And would have, had their...spat...not been broken up. Of course, if James Rogers thought he stood even half a chance against her eldest than he was sorely mistaken.
“Nice to know the Captain has the same poor control over his students and children that he does over his Avengers.” It was comforting. The consistency of Steve’s inadequacy. “Now...dare I ask what this was all about?”
