Beloved son, brother, and fiance. That's what Jun-Ho's tombstone read.
It was a closed casket, the police said that the body was too water-bloated to be put on display. Since you weren't married yet, the funeral wasn't up to you. That responsibility fell to In-Ho, Jun-Ho's brother.
You were too exhausted to argue. You didn't say that he wanted to be cremated, or that he wanted them to plant a tree over his grave. You couldn't. All you could do was just be grateful that they at least included fiance on the headstone. Because, with the way your life was going, all you would ever be is Jun-Ho's fiancee.
One step down from spouse. God, you wished this all happened after the wedding. You wish that he could've been your husband before all this. Instead of fiance on his gravestone, it could've said husband, or even father.
But you didn't get that chance.
The medical examiner said that the cause of death was indeterminate, that he could've just taken one last bachelor vacation before your wedding, or he could've had a psychic break. They don't know what he was doing in the ocean, all they knew was that a fishing boat found his body in the ocean, water filling the lungs and severe trauma to his shoulder.
You didn't know what to say. All you knew was a strange doctor was standing in front of a disfigured, boney body that you couldn't even recognize, asking you to sign a paper saying that it was the love of your life.
You got countless meals delivered to you, casserole, soup, noodles, all the things you didn't want. You and Jun-Ho would end every day watching American dramas, eating ramen and cake. He loved cake, but no one gives chocolate cake to a widow.
When you make your weekly trip to the store for toilet paper or cake or toothpaste, anyone who sees you says one of two things "I'm so sorry for your loss" or "hey, (y/n), how's Jun-Ho doing?" You hated both of them. You're getting fucking shampoo, now is not the time for grief, and now is not the time to explain that your fiance is dead. All you want is cake.
Crying is useless, talking about it is useless. It's just something that exists. You couldn't change what was happening, and you couldn't change Jun-Ho. Every day when you woke up on the two mattresses pushed together on the ground you had to remind yourself that he was dead.
Jun-ho was dead. Your fiance was dead. It became a mantra that you would mutter to yourself, and it would mostly make people stay away from you at the supermarket.
You would probably break down, jump into the ground next to the casket being lowered, have a panic attack, try to kill yourself. All of these things would happen in the coming weeks.
You really fucking wish that everybody wouldn't wear black to the funeral. Jun-Ho's favorite colors were black, and, funnily enough, yellow. You called him your little bumblebee.
No one should wear his favorite color at his funeral. It was like they were burying the last of his personality and interests into the ground with him.
Some distant relative who didn't know Jun-Ho was engaged would probably yell at you if you didn't wear black, so you did.
A semi-nice dress that fell midway down your calves, with one of Jun-Ho's soft black jackets over your shoulder. You wore pantyhose, one of the fun ones, with butterfly rhinestones on the back. Jun-Ho loved them. Whenever you worse them to one of his events he would always call him your secret weapon. You would always laugh and tell him to pay attention, you wished that you didn't tease him now.
You wore thick "soccer mom" sunglasses, to cover your eyes, and your hair was untouched since you woke up a complete and total mess.
Your knee was bouncing like crazy as you sat in the front row of the funeral procession.
"Hey, are you ok?" In-Ho placed his hand on your knee.
You nodded, not saying anything and trying not to cause a fight. You never really liked In-Ho, to you he seemed conceited. He didn't really care about anyone or anything else, and you once watched him kill a rat that had snuck into your and Jun-Ho's apartment.
He lost his brother too, and you didn't want to fight. You didn't want to tell him that Jun-Ho's death could've been because he went looking for him, you couldn't do that. It was easy to fight with people, it's less easy to grieve at a funeral.
A procession of people were coming towards you, asking you questions and giving you apologies, asking you if you needed anything. Of course, you needed something, your fucking fiance back.
"He was such a good soul" "wonderful, simply wonderful" "I was his 11th-grade biology teacher, I always knew he had potential" "I made you some soup, I'll stop by and give it to you later" "He was such a lovely man."
Was. He was a lovely man. He wasn't anymore. He wasn't your Jun-Ho who learned English from watching a decade worth of the Walking Dead, he wasn't your Jun-Ho whose police chief would call you to drive him home after he had poured his heart and soul away to work on a case, he wasn't your Jun-Ho anymore. He was just a shell without a soul inside of it.
Thank god you were wearing your sunglasses. You reached up and wiped your hand underneath them. "Thanks."
The ceremony was heartbreaking. Not that it was particularly sad, just that it was boring and nothing like what Jun-Ho would've wanted.
People that you had never even heard him mention spoke. The official police portrait that he hated was the photo on display. The commanding officer from his military service when he was 19 that Jun-Ho still complained about a decade later spoke about how strong he was.
If Jun-Ho was here he would've left early, you chuckle to yourself thinking about how instead a part of him never gets to leave.
The part that pissed you off the most was In-Ho's speech. He talked about what an honor it was for him to be Jun-Ho's big brother, when in reality before half a decade ago all he did was ask for money whenever he would visit.
All you wanted to go was go home. In-Ho tapped on your shoulder, which snapped you out of your trance and you went to give your speech.
"I don't know what to say. I don't really believe that he's dead. We were supposed to get married. But, uh, that's not gonna happen now. So, I don't really know what to do anymore. Sorry." Everyone in the crowd was crying and looking at you with pity, even though you didn't say anything that they didn't know.
This funeral is fucking embarrassing.
You didn't realize when it was over, nothing happened, some guy you'd never met just kind of stopped talking and everyone stood up. You didn't stand up. You just stared straight at the boring casket a few feet in front of you. You couldn't even remember if you threw a rose in the grave.
Some of his friends were talking about going out to eat, and one of them looked like they were about to ask you to come, but another caught his arm. One of Jun-Ho's closest friends. He knew that you wouldn't go, and he knew that asking you would only give you more anxiety.
All you wanted to do was go home, and hold Jun-Ho, but you couldn't do that.
You got in your car and drove home.
When you walked in the door you immediately took off your dress, sunglasses, shoes, and everything else uncomfortable. Now was the time to let yourself cry.
You walked towards the refrigerator, to get a piece of chocolate cake. But when you opened the door you found nothing inside.
Arms wrapped around your waist. "I ate the cake."
"You shouldn't be here."
"But I am."
"They could've seen you."
"They're busy with the funeral, besides, it's a big building."
"But-"
"Honey, you just went to my funeral. You've had a long day, forgive me for wanting to see my fiancee."
You twirled around, "fine, but if you actually get killed I'm gonna be so pissed off."
He laughed and kissed your forehead, you muttered "I won't come to the next funeral."
He doesn't laugh with this one, just smiles and kisses the tip of your nose instead.
"God, it was horrible." You rocked in his arms, "I gave the worst speech ever."
"I'm sure there have been worse speeches." He said, rocking with you and kissing the top of your head.
"I said I don't know twice." You mumbled into his chest.
"That's not too bad."
"It was like 15 seconds." You said, looking up from his chest.
"Okay, so that's a little bit worse." He chuckled, and you could feel the rumbling of his chest.
You knew everything that happened. About In-Ho, about the game, about all of it. What they In-Ho didn't know was that he had survived the fall.
He was wearing a bulletproof vest, and when he fell off the cliff he found a cave to swim into. He hid for hours, and while he was underwater he called you and told you everything, just in case. You didn't know how the wifi worked, and you didn't know how he survived, but you didn't care. He was alive.
Eventually, a police ship disguised as a fish boat came to rescue him and he pretended to be a body, just in case they were watching, which they always were.
He was immediately rushed into witness protection. Right now he was hiding out briefly in a town just outside of Seoul, but in a week or two, he would be shipped out into a farm town on Hokkaido.
You just had a few days back together, until you had no idea if or when you were going to see him again.
He noticed you looking at him wistfully and kissed your lips to distract you.
"Come with me." That snapped you out of your trance.
"What?"
"Come" kiss "with" kiss "me."
"What are we gonna do? Fake another death," he chuckled a bit, but you could tell he was completely serious. He wouldn't joke, not about this.
"Maybe, we can say you killed yourself, or maybe that you decided you needed a break and went back home."
"No one will believe me, they'll find me, besides, I don't even speak Japanese."
He stroked your cheek gently. "It's fine, you've been watching anime without the dubbs for years."
"That's what you got from that conversation. Baby, watching anime is nothing like moving to a different country." You say, warming up to the idea.
"I'll be there for you honey, I promise, I'm not going to let anyone hurt you." He pauses, "besides, me and the chief have been talking, he thinks that if they think you know something, they'll kill you anyways, this might be the only option."
He kisses your forehead again, "If it's between me being alone, and us being together, I think this may be the better option." You exclaim.
"If it's the only option." He says with a smile on his face.
"Of course, it's the only option." You say with a smile equally big.
He kissed you on the lips this time. Tomorrow you would leave for a new country that scares you, and your entire family would think that you killed yourself after the funeral, but at least you and Jun-Ho were scared together.
A/N: Sorry for the long hiatus, currently I'm obsessed with Ryu Shi-Oh, well Byeon Woo-Seok in general, so here's a lil one shot of his character. Also its been a minute, so I apologize if the writing seems rushed.
The loud sound of alarm wakes up Y/N, she groans waking up and turns off the alarm before turning beside her to see Shio sleeping peacefully. Oh how she loves seeing him asleep, he looks like a baby. She wishes she could protect him from all the stress he faces in his office, she knows how pure his heart was and how genuine his love was for her. She starts to wake him up gently by peppering light kisses all over Shio's face.
"Mhm... babe let me sleep," Shio mumbled sleepily.
"Wake up sunshine, you will be late for the office," she replied.
Reluctantly he opens his eyes and once he adjusts his eyes to sunlight he smiles at his lover. His dimples on display.
"Good morning," he smiles fondly at her.
"Good morning, lets have breakfast together," she suggests.
He looks at his phone that was on the bedside table and complains about how he is running late, "but we will have a dinner date tonight," he takes her hands and kisses sheepishly.
"Okay fine," she sighs, "but baby I'm worried about your health."
"I'm fine, I promise," he replies before going to shower.
She went downstairs and goes to the kitchen and makes herself a cup of coffee. She hears footsteps Shio's hurried footsteps after a while, while she was making a toast.
A smile tugged in her face as she felt Shio's arm snake around her waist. She turned around and felt his lips on her, a gentle yet passionate kiss was shared.
"I'm leaving, see you tonight darling," Shio smiled.
"Can't wait, I love you," she smiled.
"I love you more," he smiled and kissed her quickly before rushing towards the door.

Shio felt anger bubbling when he learned that one of the jackets were missing. His day was going awful and all he did since morning was yell at everyone. Everything is frustrating and he was on the verge of breaking down.
He also had to attend meetings and was trying to figure out what to do with the missing jacket situation. He will be working late by the looks of it, he sighed and continued working stressfully, completely forgetting to inform Y/N about rescheduling the dinner date.

Y/N kept waiting for Shio to call, she got all dolled up and since he was taking her out and didn't say where yet so she waited till Shio could pick her up.
Shio was supposed to be home by 7pm, it was nearing 9pm, she got worried and tried to call Shio multiple times but every call went straight to voicemail. At this point she wasn't even worried about missing date, she was extremely concerned about his whereabouts. She called Shio's manager and got to know Shio was staying late because of an urgent matter.
She understood his situation and felt bad for him. Her poor baby love was so stressed, she decided she wanted to go surprise him at the office by bringing him some food as well. She knows how much he overworks and how he tends to forget to eat when stressed.
She called an Uber and made a stop at his favorite chinese takeout place and got his favorite items, then she proceeded to go to his office. She checked the time, it was 10pm by the time she reached Doogo headquarters.
She was greeted by his assistant, the office was empty and dimly lit, and only his bodyguards and assistant were there. She went inside his office room, as soon as she entered she felt chills run down on her spine. Shio looked different, he looked paler than usual and as she got closer, she could see his veins- long and darker- she made eye contact with him. He had this fierce look and she saw his hands were in a fist.
"Don't come closer," he said lowly, the voice itself was something she never heard before.
He went outside taking long steps. She was horrified, she never saw him in this demeanor. She started to think what was happening, she couldn't figure out what made him act like this, and what was with those veins?
He came back after half an hour, while she was lost in her thoughts. She snapped back into reality and observed his movements, he quickly went to his office table and drank a blue liquid, he then turned his back away from her and it looked like he took a deep breathe before turning towards her.
She was seated in one of the sofas placed in the middle of the room, he quickly came towards her and knelt before her, she slightly flinched. Shio felt hurt... was she scared of him?
"What are you doing here, love?" Shio asked softly, "how did you get here?"
"I-i took an Uber, brought food for you," she replied.
"Uber?! Don't you know how dangerous it is to travel late at night?" he slightly raised his voice, he was always so overprotective of her.
She closed her eyes, slightly scared, considering his early behavior.
"Hey, hey, look at me, what's wrong babe?" he asked.
"Nothing, I'm sorry I came, I'll just go," she said starting to get up.
"Wait no," he stopped her from getting up.
"Why are you acting like this?" he gulped.
At this statement she got angry, she shoved him away before saying, "are you just gonna pretend now that you didn't act weirdly when I entered? What was that? Where did you go for 30 minutes and why was your veins popping?"
Shio sighed before trying to take her hands, "baby calm down, I can explain."
"You better explain," she huffed.
"Please can I explain later? I'm just too tired now, it was a long day," Shio begged.
"What are you hiding, Shio?"
"Please trust me, its better if you not know."
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
"I don't want to lose you, I cannot lose you," he sobbed.
"Shio, you're scaring me, what's going on?" she argued.
"Please just let it slide, I will tell you when I'm ready," he cried.
"You can tell me anything, you know that right?"
"I DON'T WANT YOU TO LEAVE ME, OKAY? THEY ALL DO, IF I TELL YOU YOU WILL JUST LEAVE!" He snapped.
"Wh-what?"

you only stopped fighting back when they threatened to make hyunsoo’s worse, since then you try to take more hits than him, he didn’t deserve that you were only ever nice to him, even before the bullies, its why he became your friend, he heard there was a girl who was mean to everybody in the school, she never talked and would yell at you for even looking at her, he thought he could be her friend, and he was right.
you looked up from your desk and were ready to glare at the person who disturbed your nap, but was taken back by the most beautiful boy you’ve ever laid eyes on shortly after that, you became friends, hyunsoo knew you mean to anyone that wasn’t him, but he never knew it because you liked him.
hyunsoo grew to love you in the time he spent with you, and it became more every time you’d stand up for him against dohun, it was obvious that hyunsoo had gotten depressed after everything, even noticing scars you knew weren’t inflicted by his classmates.
you got angry, and wanted to shout at and beat dohun senseless after making such a wonderful, cheerful boy do such things to himself, but you knew it’d only make his situation worse, so you held back, it was getting worse day by day, and you didn’t know how much longer you could handle this, after a harsh day, when he leaned into your touch, you confessed, telling him how much he pained you tosl see him in pain, how much you wish you could teach thosegl guys a lesson, and how much you loved him and he returned your feelings! you’ve never been happier, and hyunsoo too.
it was summer break, and you noticed hyunsoo had been smiling more, how his scars faded away, his genuine smiles that were reversed for you, hyunsoo had to leave their date early, something happened to his dad and he needed to be there, it was already late at night, so you followed him, it wasn’t the first time you followed him, you had to made sure he was safe and you were glad you did, you noticed how a girl from your school, jihyung was it? found herself next to hyunsoo, and she started to talk with him.
hyunsoo was getting uncomfortable, but the girl attached herself to his side, completely ignoring his protests, your blood boiled, how could she do that to someone?! someone that belonged to you?! surely she knew about the two of you? everyone knew that the two losers were dating and you wanted to hurt her, in a worse way that she was hurting what was yours.
you saw the woman grab his face and leaned towards, him, her hand on places that it shouldn’t be, when you jumped out of your hiding spot, you grabbed the pocket knife you always kept with you just incase, and stabbed it into her head, you pulled it out and did it again, but in a different spot, then again, and again, and again-
she fell to the floor, unresponsive and you smiled, she was gone, but now hyunsoo was looking at you, he looked scared, even more than he did when he first got bullied
“y/n?” his tone was careful, but undoubtedly scared “what did you do?!” when you walked closer you tried to explain yourself, but he backed away “she was a human being…no one deserves something like that!”
“she hurt you! anyone who hurts you should be dead, and what she did to you? i should’ve made it hurt more” hyunsoo kept backing away, until he finally got the courage to run, you sighed and ran after him, you didn’t want to hurt him, but one time wouldn’t be so bad…you grabbed a small piece of wood laying on the ground, and when you caught up with him, you hit him, hard enough to make him pass out.
you tied him up and put him in your car, driving home and putting him in your room, but you weren’t done for the day, you tracked down dohun’s house, he was asleep when you entered the room, you took a knife larger than your previous, and slammed it directly into his heart, you would’ve preferred something that hurt more, but this had to do, then you drove to hyunsoo’s house, you only needed his mother and sister, his dad was already taken care of, poor thing got ran over by a truck driver on his way to work, you were already planning to do this, but it was just a bit early.
once you were finished with them you headed home, just in time for hyunsoo to wake up, he winced at the pain in his head, when he looked up, remembering what happened as he locked eyes with you, he realized he was tied up and started struggling, “i’m sorry about the restraints, are they hurting you? i can take them off only if you don’t try to run away again” you sat down next to him, he was breathing heavily, struggling to free himself from the tight grip of the ropes.
it took him a few minutes to stop, he was exhausted and started to cry, you wrapped your arms around him to try and comfort him, for a moment he seemed to forget the situation, and what you had done, he leaned in to kiss you, seeking comfort that only you could give, but he pulled away, leaning away from you, “someone will look for me…they’ll find me…” you sighed and moved away “anyone who could rescue you is already dead, give up, your parents, your sister, even dohun is dead, no one will look for you, cause no one else cares about you the way i do, they’ll never give you the love that i do” hyunsoo felt his heart drop when you mentioned his family, it was true that they didn’t care for him anymore, overhearing his sister tell her friends how much of a freak he was, and “no, i don’t have a brother!” even his parents not giving him as much attention.
the only one who did seem to care…was you but you hurt people, you killed his family, and you killed that girl, you didn’t even break a sweat, how could he love someone like that? “you’re right” he lied “i’m sorry i said that, i…love you” but you weren’t stupid, you knew everything about hyunsoo, right down to his lies, does he seriously think he can get away with this? you won’t hurt him, you’ll only teach him a lesson, there is a part of him that still loves you, and you’ll just have to bring it out, you left alone in a separate room for days, only bringing him food and drinks, and sometimes letting him have a shower, he tried to be cute to you, but you knew he was only toying with you.
you would tape his mouth shut and lock the door while bringing another boy over, you felt sick as you flirted with them, they didn’t deserve your attention, but hyunsoo was a brat, and needed to get himself together and it was working, hyunsoo could hear every flirty remark you made towards them, and it made his heart ache, he thought he shouldn’t love someone like you, but you were his only happiness for months, how could he let someone like that go so easily? he tried to pretend it didn’t hurt, like it didn’t feel like his heart was torn to pieces everytime you wouldn’t even look at him and when you went inside weeks later to bring him water he broke, tears in his eyes as you didn’t even speak this time, he looked at you and begged, for the first time, to look at him, to give him attention, to love him again, he loves you, and now you’re the only one he has left, he’ll do anything for your attention, you would be lying if you said you weren’t feeling heartbroken too, you wrapped your arms around, vowing to never make him lonely again, never to let him feel that way when you’re around.
because he made you whole, he made you feel things you never thought you could, so you will latch onto him forever, if it meant feeling like that for your entire life.

One year ago, you and Cha Hyunsu would’ve been sitting near the entrance of Green Home apartments, and he would be listening to you talk. One year ago, you would’ve firmly believed that by now, the world would’ve been restored to some kind of peace. It had, in a way, but certainly not in the one your past self would have hoped for. And certainly not the one Hyunsu would’ve wanted for the two of you.
Nevertheless, you remained grateful through everything— As much as you could manage. The shelter was as organized as possible and conflict was a surprisingly rare occurence. Things were alright. As long as you didn’t give time for the grief and terror to catch up to you.
But things couldn’t be calm forever. Especially not in the current state of your world.
When Eunyu disappeared with that man from the military, it only took a day before you grew restless enough to depart from the stadium. After all, Eunyu was the closest thing to a friend you had here, at this point. It only felt right to try and find her. And you did, surprisingly, along with a few familiar faces and an unknown one.
You didn’t expect for the evening you found your friend again to be the very same you would see the person you had considered closest to you at Green Home for the first time in… Over a year.
“Finally asleep.” you sighed quietly, watching Eunyu get the rest her body had probably been begging for. It was difficult to convince her you would stand watch and wait for your friend to wake up in her stead, but her exhaustion made her stop arguing eventually.
You turned towards the room he was in.
Cha Hyunsu.
You crossed your arms and sighed. One year without a single trace of him anywhere. And now he… Just reappears? You wanted to be surprised, but part of you really wasn’t. You were angry, just a little— Spending all this time telling yourself he was gone, only for him to come back as if nothing happened felt like a slap to the face. Still, you couldn’t blame him. Yet. You had no idea what happened to him during that time span.
You felt relieved, if anything.
After some hesitation, you walked over to the glass door. Your hand settled on the handle, pushing it open, before your eyes widened. Hyunsu was sitting on the hospital bed, stretching his neck quietly, not at all perturbed by anything. Hell, he even seemed peaceful.
More peaceful than you’d ever seen him.
You stepped inside quietly and let the door close behind you. Hyunsu continued to move his head, slowly, as if trying to relax, and didn’t acknowledge your presence. His shoulder was bloodstained, still, and his hoodie had cuts here and there. Messy as he appeared, this was your friend from Green Home, there was no denying it. You hadn’t even dared hope he could still be alive, after all this time. You couldn’t give your heart such a high possibility of suffering if he turned out to be gone.
And now he was here. So calm.
He opened his eyes with a soft sigh, before turning his gaze to you. “Finally decided to talk to me?” he asked. His tone was different. Too different. This did not feel like the kind of change that happened in a year. He smiled a little at your silence, tilting his head curiously. “No? Do you need more time? That would be too bad.”
He hopped off the bed with a huff and slowly walked over to you. The closer he got, the clearer it became that his eye color was different. Long gone was the blank, dark brown gaze that looked back at you when you two would talk— Replaced by a vibrant sky blue. A stark contrast from what you were used to, as was everything else about him, apparently. Be it his tone or his mannerisms, it all felt deeply wrong, like it wasn’t him at all. You furrowed your eyebrows but stood still, letting him walk to the very edge of your personal space.
“I’ve been waiting to see you for such a long while.”
“Huh?”
Hyunsu’s eyes widened a little before he grinned. This wasn’t … Him. Not exactly, at least. Not the one you talked to so much. But special-cases, or MH, essentially coexisted in one body. The monster forms around a person’s strongest desire, or whatever it was that scientist at the shelter said.
So perhaps, all the times you and Hyunsu had talked in the past had also been conversations that this side of him had been listening to.
A bit scary. You couldn’t really focus on that, though. You took a deep breath and looked at him.
“Is he well?”
He clicked his tongue, expression growing sour. “He’s fine. Let him get some rest. He’s tired.”
You nodded softly, gaze averting. That sounded fine enough to you. He was right, too, earlier— You had been avoiding talking to him since you met again. With the excuse of focusing on Yikyung and scavenging through the hospital, you had plenty of reasons to act as if you weren’t seeing the person you cared the most for after a whole entire year of thinking he was dead.
But you did feel his gaze on you the whole time. It was heavy, and remorseful. You’d planned to talk to him— In fact, that’s why you decided to come over to the room he was in. You hadn’t expected things to turn out this way, however. Seems like you couldn’t talk to your friend, yet.
“It’s nice to know you care, though.” he hummed, gaze never leaving your face. “He thinks about you so much, too.”
You looked back up at him. If this was the so-called monster part of Hyunsu, then what was his deal? A lot of questions about this situation flooded your head. “What are you playing at?”
He chuckled softly, before backing up just enough to hold up his hands in an innocent gesture. “Nothing as evil as you probably think.” he said, voice steady. “I just wanted us to talk. Just us.”
“Huh.”
“You see, your Hyunsu has an interest in you.” he said, tilting his head slowly. It felt as if he was analyzing you. It was a bit unsettling, but you didn’t bother breaking eye contact this time. “But I do, too. I’d say maybe… Even more than him?” his grin widened at his own words.
“I find it hard to believe you care about people.”
“And yet.” he scoffed, expression dropping to a blank one, seemingly annoyed. He dropped his arms to his sides and sighed. “We decided to work together. Couldn’t have him die on me, it wouldn’t be nice for anyone involved.”
You decided this Hyunsu seemed to mean it when he said they made a deal, just about as much as when he said he had an interest in you. So placing your trust in his bloodied hands for the time being, you tried to be less on guard. He wouldn’t kill you, or most importantly, Hyunsu. That was enough for now.
“Okay.” you sighed, crossing your arms. “So you want to talk?”
He smiled a little. “Yes.” he stated, before taking a step towards you. Only this time, he didn’t bother keeping a safe distance. His face was a touch too close to yours. “I’ve wanted to for a while.”
“You…” you paused for a moment, thinking. “Do you usually go around talking to people while getting so close to them?”
“I don’t go around talking to people.” he mocked your tone before scoffing, a grin pulling at his lips. He brought a hand up to your face, holding your cheek firmly. His focus turned to his hand, eyes narrowing in its direction. You felt his fingers loosen a little, as if he was trying to control how tightly he was holding you.
Which he was. Now it felt gentle. Almost unfitting. Not only that but the Hyunsu you knew was never this comfortable with anything close to physical affection. It felt so out of place.
“Does it bother you?” he whispered, eyes flitting over to meet yours again. He moved in closer, just enough for your noses to touch. He seemed to be having fun switching between looking at your eyes and at your lips. “Am I too close?”
Before you could think of a way to answer, you froze. The unfamiliar color in Hyunsu’s eyes dissipated, the cocky expression you were almost beginning to get used to replaced by a soft, almost startled one. His voice, much quieter now, whispered your name. Your eyes widened and you sighed in something akin to relief.
“Hyunsu.” you breathed out. The latter looked at you with a stunned look, struggling to find anything to say for a while. He looked into your eyes like he was making sure you were okay— Making sure you were really alive. His thumb moved back and forth softly over the skin of your cheek, his gaze scanning you in an almost panicked manner. He sighed shakily, before he brought your face into his shoulder. He seemed to be almost trembling.
“I’m sorry.” he exhaled, wrapping his other arm around your shoulders hesitantly. Still terrible at hugging. You’d missed those awkward displays of affection so much. “I… I’m sorry, it’s been… A very long time.”
“God, you’re so cruel, Cha Hyunsu.”
He tilted his head down into your neck. Now you felt his tears on your skin. He really hasn’t changed, you thought. It was obvious when he came running for help when Yikyung was badly injured, when he did everything to help her and went all the way to look for that kid— Cha Hyunsu hadn’t changed.
“I’m—”
“Quit apologizing.” you huffed, holding him tightly. “I missed you, too.”
Hyunsu sighed quietly, tightening his hold on you a little. He was relieved to finally have you with him again, but he couldn’t shake off his worries.
“You talked to… Him? Right?”
“I did.” you said, pulling away enough to look at him. The concern on his features was undeniable. “And it went fine. It’s okay.”
Hyunsu’s frown deepened. “I don’t know if it’s alright. Me staying… So close to you.”
“Don’t even think about disappearing on me again.” you warned, eyes widening. “I don’t care about any reason you give me— Don’t leave again.”
The boy sighed, averting his gaze for a moment, before slowly bringing it back to you.
“I won’t.” he assured, “I won’t leave you again.”
He closed his eyes and pulled you into another hug. He had to believe his existence on its own wouldn’t cause more problems for you to deal with. He had to trust that even if it did, you meant it when you said you didn’t mind. He knew you did. You always meant it.
He opened his eyes and looked at his reflection in the glass door just a bit further away. Seeing you in his arms should have been reassuring. But the blue hue of one of his eyes and the nagging voice in his head seemed to be laughing at his naivety. He pressed his eyes shut again and buried his face in your shoulder.
This is our priority, now. (I know.) No one else comes first. (I know.) Don’t let them get hurt.
