Curly hair is naturally drier than straight hair and needs more moisture. When you think of the word chemical you often think about perms and relaxers; chemicals are also in shampoos, conditioners and even products designed for curly hair. The curly girl method makes sure your curly hair is the healthiest it can be without chemicals such as sulfates and silicones. There are many natural hair product lines that are sulfate, silicone, alcohol, paraben etc. free but…. ain’t nobody got time for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
What are sulfates and silicones?
· Sulfates are often found in shampoo and strip your hair of moisture
· Silicones are often found in conditioners and other products and they coat your hair with a layer of film that prevents your hair from getting enough moisture. There are some silicones found in shea moisture products that are water soluble so it’s okay to use.
*THESE CHEMICALS ARE BAD FOR YOUR HAIR!!!!!!!!!*
Sulfates are a chemical with many names such as: (anything ending with the word “sulfate”)
· - ammonium lauryl sulfate
· - ammonium laureth sulfate
Silicones are a chemical with names such as: (anything ending with “xane, cone, conol and col”) these are NOT water soluble
So, how do you start the curly girl method?
1. Start by getting rid of all the products you have in your hair by washing your hair with a shampoo containing a sulfate. Yes…a sulfate because sulfates are the ONLY thing that can break down the silicone barrier in your hair. Wash your hair with this one time and NEVER use it again (UNLESS you accidentally use a silicone product.) After this, you need to use shampoos that are sulfate-free. ONCE A MONTH USE SHAMPOO
2. Use conditioner without silicone. Co-washing is when you wash your hair with conditioner so that your hair is moisturized.
3. Deep conditioners are to be used almost every time you wash your hair to moisturize your hair. Regular conditioner does not have molecules that are small enough to reach within your hair shaft and moisturize it. You apply the deep conditioner as if you were covering your hair in conditioner and cover your hair in a shower cap or even a plastic shopping bag and leave it on for 30 minutes to 1 hour. NO MORE THAN AN HOUR and wash it out.
4. Protein treatments are designed to strengthen your hair, this is only to be done ONCE A MONTH(because it makes your hair strong) and to be applied just like a deep conditioner , with the same amount of time.* Products containing protein are okay but do not use them often or leave them in your hair for long periods of time. *
5. Leave-in conditioners are designed to moisturize your hair after you wash it and deep condition it (etc.) all the way up until your next wash day. You can apply as much as you need and you DO NOT NEED TO WASH THIS OUT. + Oils are used after leave- in conditioners to seal in the moisture. Oil and water don’t like each other so the water stays on the inside of your hair and the oil creates a barrier on the top of your hair to keep the water in.

· L’Oréal Paris sulfate free shampoo line
Conditioners: (I also use these as leave INS because they are healthy and are protein free)
· Vo5*any* tea therapy and moisture milks($0.69 - $1 something depending on which store)
· Suave NATURALS line *any*
· Tresemme Naturals (The big white bottle with the green leaf on it. 25 oz. bottle … only about $5)
· Shea moisture *any*( about $10)
Oils: (DO NOT BUY OIL FROM THE HAIR STORE, BUY THEM FROM THE MARKET BECAUSE THEY ARE NEED TO BE PURE)
Light moisturizing oils include:
· Any organic UNREFINED coconut oil
· Vatika oil (Indian store)
· Castor oil needs to be DARK COLORED. (Golden yellow, or brown) Not clear. The darker the oil, the purer it is. I suggest Jamacian sunny isle brand.
· Herbal essences totally twisted
