Tbh this is the funniest post on this dumb website
“It’s incredibly worrying when the bedbird tucks you in.”
@gettinglowder
not gonna lie that still looks intimately real
I’m still somewhat convinced that someone sold their soul to create the special effects in Jurassic Park because that shit is over 20 years old and it still really, really holds up, better than the stuff in a lot of current movies, even.
Fucking witchcraft, man.
fucking look at this shit though
Literally see this post flying around with a few different responses added to the bottom each time so I’ll say it for this one myself:
THEY ACTUALLY BUILT A GIANT MASSIVELY DETAILED FUCKING ANIMATRONIC T-REX FOR ALL OF THIS THAT’S WHY THE EFFECTS ARE SO GOOD. CAUSE IT AIN’T CGI. AND IT AIN’T GUY IN A COSTUME. IT’S A BIG FUCKING ROBOT DINOSAUR. AND EVERY PART IS DESIGNED TO MOVE. IT COST LIKE HALF THE BUDGET OF THE FILM.
amazing
And they had the film it in small increments, especially in the outdoor scenes, because the rain fall kept soaking into the ‘skin’ of the rex and would slow down and mess up its movements. So they would stop filming and have a crew out there drying off this massive, fake dinosaur, and then they’d start filming again until it was too wet. Repeat until the end of the scene.
They used animatronics and detailed costumes for most if not all of the dinosaurs in the first movie.
The triceratops for instance, was also animatronic.
And the raptors were dudes in suits. I shit you not.
One of my favorite anecdotes I’ve read on tumblr is how the t-rex robot from Jurassic park would malfunction while it was drying out. How did it malfunction, you might wonder?
Motherfucker randomly started moving.
So apparently if you were on the jp set you would sometimes hear people screaming bloody murder even though they were all well aware that it was a giant animatronic puppet and wouldn’t actually, you know, eat them.
(link to said post about malfunctioning t-rex)
Did not know this, had to reblog for awesome movie history insights.
So, I knew about the animatronics bit but I did not know the raptors were guys in suits and the malfunctioning t-rex sounds terrifying.
And i just googled malfunctioning t-rex and was not disappointed. Apparently in order to put the skin on over the steel frame a guy had to crawl inside the t-rex while it was turned on and glue the skin down. And if somebody turned the t-rex off or the power went out the guy in the t-rex stood a very real chance of getting mangled and killed by the hydraulics.
So of course, the power goes out.
And this guy is still in there gluing the skin down.
Apparently the way to survive getting sheered to death by huge sheets of metal while you’re inside a giant t-rex robot is to curl into a ball and hope for the best.
And this guy hoped for the best and got it.
Some other people on stage pried open the t-rex jaws and glue guy crawled out of its mouth and was totally okay.
This is getting better and better.
I think they only had like 6 minutes of CGI
I’m just waiting for the T-Rex to come to life and leave its stand.
@spinosaurus-the-fisher is this the kind of content you love?
Realism comes at a cost, it seems.
i mean ok but why has nobody posted this:
It’s a three piece raptor suit.
Old movies had the best special effects

One part of me wants to majestically stride down these stairs, all decked out in a ball gown and wearing at least a billion dollars worth of jewelry.
Another part just wants to watch a slinky go down the steps.

LISTEN TO BOB ROSS.
Bob Ross was paid $0 to make his series. He made a living giving lessons IRL and later selling his own line of paints and brushes.
I apologize for not reblogging him as much but everyone needs this on their dash daily. Seriously everyone needs this on their blog or wherever. Do they rerun this anymore or no?
They have Bob Ross on hulu now.
Aw omg I used to watch reruns of his show when I was a little kid :’)

I posted my Carol knife a while ago, but never actually wrote up a tutorial. It's pretty easy project! You will need: - 1/4" and 1/8" craft foam - Contact cement (Barge or Weldwood) - Exacto knife and blades - Dremel tool with sanding drum - Spray on plastidip or PVA glue/modge podge - Silver and black paint First you need to make a template. I bought the SA knife (Military Warrior Knife from Budk, $10) and just traced it, although you can easily print out the picture at life size. Then you need to cut your pieces out of the indicated thicknesses of craft foam. Try to get them as smooth as you can, although it's not the end of the world if you have some jagged edges. Next you need to glue the 3 1/4" pieces out and glue them together, sandwiching the blade piece with the two handgrip pieces. Let the contact cement set up for a while. Here's where you make it look pretty! Use the dremel tool to sand the edges down and smooth everything out. This is where you'll really need to spend some time and care. After this step, you can heat seal the foam with a heat gun (or the stove) and smooth down the edges. Look at videos on YouTube to get some pointers on sanding/smoothing foam, especially the ones by Punished Props. Next, glue the two small, thin grip pieces on either side, and seal it with your preferred foam sealant (modge podge, PVA glue, spray on plastidip.) Paint it up in silver and black, weather it a bit and there you go! Your very own con-safe trench knife. You do need to be careful, since the knife will want to bend if you are rough with it, which will crack your paint. I might be remaking mine with a layer of styrene as the blade layer (as opposed to craft foam,) and I will definitely take more pictures!
Hey! So I googled "Carol Cosplay Knife" and your tumblr came up. I plan on cosplaying "Wolf Carol" and I have just about everything I need, but the knife is essential, considering it's always on her hip. How did you make it? Step by step? This will be my first time crafting any sort of cosplay thing so I'm a bit nervous and not very knowledgeable on the subject.
Hi! Sorry for the delay, I've been off tumblr for a few days! I'm going to make a post on this so it's a little easier for people to find/share! Stay tuned for a short tutorial in an hour or so :)
I was finally able to get some photos of my Carol costume! I have a bunch more of my group and myself, but for now, just look at the flowers...
Here’s the vector I made for Tauriel’s Bow. Let me know if it works - if not I have a few other version that may be better. Stay tuned, because I’m doing a full write-up (with pics!) of how I created my version of her bow that I’ll be posting in a few days!

So I was recently asked how I made my dark lantern for my Beast costume. I am very silly and often don’t take progress pictures, and that was definitely the case here, so I’m going to do the best I can. You can find the lantern I used on Amazon, right [here].
I started by disassembling the whole lantern. The tubes on the sides were the first to go, along with the wires holding the glass. All I needed to do was wiggle them back and forth and the tubes popped right out. Those pieces basically held the whole thing together, so after that it came apart into separate pieces easily.
I also took the handle for carrying it by hand off, along with the little ring on the top. I did need a pair of needle-nose pliers for that part. Make sure you don’t damage the handle piece though, since we’ll be putting it back on. You also can take the little black knob off of the lantern, leaving just a smaller knob inset in the base. That’s the part that turns the light on, but we have to make it stick out a bit if we want to be true to the OtGW design.
After that I started constructing the basic shape. Believe it or not, the main form of the lantern is made out of – wait for it – a soda bottle. You can see in the pictures that near the bottom the form is rounded because of the shape of the bottle, but has darts on top where I needed to make it curve in. Pretty sure I just used super glue for that part, and it worked like a charm. The ridges on the sides are just strips of craft foam (sealed with modge podge before paint.) The circle where the light shines out is made out of frosted white plastic folder with a rim of craft foam.
You’ll also notice that on my lantern there are 4 little raised circles. Those are just pieces of styrene that I cut and sanded to cover the holes that were left when I removed the 2 side tubes. The rim-thing around the top was obviously not big enough for the OtGW design, so I made a new one (also with styrene,) and heat formed it so it tilted downwards. I’ve found that the best way to do that is to get 2 metal or glass bowls of appropriate sizes and press the heated styrene in between them. I had to make 2 hooks for the handle at this time too, so I grabbed some 14 g wire and whipped them up. The edge around the rim was finished with some clear plastic tubing that I slit lengthwise with an exacto and glued on.
Before I could start putting this thing back together I had to figure out the knob for the light. I ended up grabbing a piece of aluminum rod and epoxying it to the knob in the base. I then epoxied the black knob to the top of the rod to top it off. I had to cut into my soda bottle form to make it fit, which you can see if you look closely.
After that, all that was left was to glue it together. You absolutely need epoxy for this part. The lantern is really heavy with the D batteries in it, and without the tubes on the sides the whole lantern is held together with the bond you’re going to make. It’s tough to explain the gluing process without pictures, but I’m sure you guys can figure it out. I suggest letting each bond cure before moving to the next one so you don’t knock anything out of place while it’s setting. Finally, I hid my sloppy bond between the base of the lantern and the soda bottle piece with another piece of plastic tubing, primed, painted, and weathered.
I’d love to make another one, since I made this in about 2 days with not much sleep. I know if i worked more from scratch, with better materials, I could create a much better final product (I hate making sloppy work, and this is pretty sloppy for me.)
TL;DR:
1) Take the thing apart. All of it.
2) Make the big shape out of a soda bottle. Accents with craft foam, styrene, clear plastic tubing, 14g wire, and frosted white plastic folder.
3) Put the thing back together with super glue and epoxy.
4) Seal the craft foam, prime, and paint. Go you!
Hey, that Beast costume is really awesome. Where did you get the lantern and what exactly did you change to make it how it is?
Thank you! The lantern is one thing I really wish I’d taken progress pictures of while I was making it. I am a very silly person and was rushing so much I didn’t snap any at all. It’s a bit hard to explain, since I totally wung it when I made it, but I’ll do a write up and try to explain using pictures of the lantern I started with and pictures of the final product. Look for it within the next few days!
