One day someone at Dark Horse asked if I was interested in writing a story about young Hellboy. I wasn’t, but instead of saying no, I said “What about two pages of Hellboy eating pancakes?” I thought it was a riot. I didn’t expect anyone else to like it, but it turned out to be a big hit with a lot of readers. It’s nice when that happens.

This is a consecrated lamp I use for dream divination. It is a ritual I picked up from the Greek Magical Papyri (VII, 255-259); I used it several times with remarkable results.

If you have a question that can be answered by a yes or no, light the lamp and some incense before going to sleep. Ask the question to the lamp, and add this formula:

“Hail Lord, lamp who shinest beside Osirs and shinest besides Osirchentechtha, and my Lord Archangel Michael. If it is advantageous for me to do this, show me plants and water, but if it is not, show me fire and iron. Now, now, quick, quick!”
