Monday, June 19: Graveyard Rodeo, "Behind Enemy Lines"
R.I.P. Perry McAuley (1960-2019)
Sowing Discord in the Haunts Of Man came out roughly in parallel with Crowbar and Eyehategod’s first records, but Graveyard Rodeo had been mowing New Orleans down for a solid 14 years by then and were among the first- if not actually the first- groups to play what became known as sludge metal. And perhaps because they came to this sound without any immediate antecedents, tracks like “Behind Enemy Lines” were gnarlier and just plain uglier (which was really saying something) than even Corrosion of Conformity. Of course this came out on Century Media- aside from Iced Earth, the label made its bones putting out the most unkempt and ineptly antisocial material they could find. Perry McAuley didn’t so much howl as belch his war cries, and aside from the battle scene intro (which took up nearly half the runtime) the music was both muddy and frantic. Graveyard Rodeo’s lack of polish gave sludge metal a more threatening vibe, and stood in contrast the more polished (relatively speaking) approach of their counterparts.
man it’s been raining almost every single day here (an extremely rare thing) and the heat is the absolute worst smhh. So I shall project vacation vibes with ya bois

Instead of being a super villain like your parents, you ended up joining a company. Now your wildly successful and quite frankly much more closer to world domination than your parents. Your parents can’t handle it.
