It’s not that aces and aros aren’t valid or whatever, it’s just that anti-lgbt legislation, anti-lgbt activism, and anti-lgbt portrayals genuinely never effect cis heteroromantic aces, cis heterosexual aros, and cis aroaces. If (non-lgbt) aces and aros get caught up in the mix it’s likely exactly because the push by the ace/aro community to be consider lgbt and not because there is systemic aphobia the same way there is systemic cisheterosexism.

Here are two examples of anti-lgbt legislation obviously not affecting aces! Conversion therapy - where conversion therapy for LGBT people is legal, conversion therapy for aces is legal. Conversion therapy is harmful. e.g. - drugs that barely work (0.5% higher than placebo!), barely passed FDA approval, and cause dangerous side effects marketed to cure lack of sexual attraction. (flibanserin, if you want to look it up) Legal discrimination - in Russia, it is illegal for someone with a “disorder of sexual preference” to get a driver's license. This includes gay, trans, bi, and ace people. (asexuality is defined as a sexual disorder in the DSM-V, which is rather liberal on LGBT issues for a psychiatric manual, so I highly doubt Russia would be more liberal and say that actually, asexuality is not a disorder) You may argue that these are just incidental, or due to misplaced homophobia, or due to a push from aces to be seen as lgbt (doubtful bc they are both based on various governing bodies accepting the DSM-V definition of asexuality as a disorder) but they are examples of anti-lgbt legislation that also negatively affect aces. However, I don’t know if the distinction of cause is necessary to say that aces are affected by anti-lgbt legislation. The ‘cause’ is the belief that non-standard sexual orientations are harmful, or disorders, or need to be cured. You can argue that it’s not aphobia if you like, but it is an example of aces being discriminated against due to anti-lgbt mindsets.

I took a look at the Russian bill and it doesn’t specifically mention asexuals. It draws from the International Classification of Diseases (10th Revision) and bans people under specific provisions within it. The anti-LGBT portion is from Sections F60-69 Disorders of Adult Personality and Behavior. This section is really broad and including schizophrenia, kleptomania, compulsive gambling, gender identity disorder, sadomasochism, and Münchhausens among others. Notably, none of it included HSDD (nor does it target LGBT people other than trans people). The belief that it banned asexual people from driving is a misinterpretation of the bill.

As for conversion therapy, it doesn’t affect people who are cishet because it is specially about turning LGBT people into cis straight gender conforming people or, at a minimum, traumatizing them into suppressing their identity as LGBT people. There aren’t ex-ace or ex-aro camps and therapists. There’s a reason why a lot of anti-LGBT shit is couched from “its okay if you are as long as you never, ever act on it.” There are plenty of people who would prefer that lgbt people be celibate and partnerless for the rest of their lives. I’m not trying to say that aces and aros don’t ever experience pathologization or medical abuse, but that conversion therapy as a term isn’t about aces or aros. Aces and aros may benefit from anti-conversion therapy laws if they argue that they are broad enough to include ace and aros, but it’s ignorant to suggest that conversion therapy is about or affects people who aren’t LGBT.

I think you might have misinterpreted the comic. the joke was how she, an ace person, could forget something as obvious and familiar to other people as sexual attraction! I thought her reaction was so funny I suggested making a daily comic about it.

Lyd is my girlfriend! We’re in love! Passionate lesbian love. For four years now! Since that comic we moved in together and we’ve started building savings for our life together! We talk online (Twitter, we don’t really use tumblr) about struggles we face, homophobia, lesbian history and representation, and the intersection of being gay with being ace, not ace, gender conforming, and gender non-conforming. That comic you’re saying is homophobic might look like it to someone without the context of our life, and maybe it did cause a sapphic woman to feel alienated due to her sexual attraction. I understand that because I’ve felt that way many times from the words of both lgbt and non-lgbt people alike. But it was an accident, and while that can’t take away the damage, I promise that Lyd’s comics showing our happy life together, our posts online, even our youtube channel all do infinitely more good for fellow sapphic women and other lgbt people than this comic did bad. Lyd apologized for the misunderstandings and lack of clarity.

Please stop holding other lgbt people to an impossibly high standard. We have so many enemies in this world, the last thing we need is to be attacking each other for the smallest infractions.

Its not the biggest deal really. But I can see how it is viewed as homophobic. Historically gay people have been painted as over-sexual deviants or we are not allowed to be sexual at all. The comic implies that “allosexual” gay people know they are attracted to the same gender because they want to have sex with them. I mean maybe their partner personally said “there were other feelings too” and thats her specific experience with attraction but the comic on a public platform not connected to the context of their relationship implies that any gay who doesn’t identify as asexual (including children) must have an easier way telling they are attracted to another person because they want to fuck them. Which is..over sexualizing and dehumanizing  It is important to note that op is also a lesbian and probably didn’t mean it like that. But this is one of the many reasons a lot of people do not like the term allosexual. It sexualizes people and labels people without their consent something inherently sexual. And it groups lgbt people who don’t identify as ace with cishet people who don’t identify as ace as if our experiences with sexuality and attraction are similar and also has a similar power structure over ace people which we do not have.
