Costume Fun at the Cap10K

Austin never fails to keep things a little weird. That’s what makes our city so unique, right? At today’s Statesman Capitol 10K, most of the runners donned mesh running shorts, lightweight sneakers and loose T-shirts. However, among the 17,523 runners, you could spot some out of this world costumes. During my five hours of reporting, I can’t tell you how many people I saw rocking non-traditional running outfits. Some of these costumes included a disco ball, a man dressed as a bride and a woman dressed as a groom, lots of ballerinas and even H-E-Buddy made a special appearance! After chatting with some of the costumed runners, most of them said that they just dressed up for the fun of it — even if the costume wasn’t comfortable to run in.

David Wilson (Scooby-Doo) and Matthew Malloy (Shaggy) dressed up as the mystery-solving, best friend duo from the late 1960s hit television show, Scooby-Doo! In real life, Wilson and Malloy have been best friends since kindergarten. 

Dan Treviño thought it would be pretty awesome to be a wrestler for the race. The question is, how comfortable was it?

Sarah Soto (Apple) and Ronnie Rudesal (Banana) are two of the over 2,000 H-E-B partners who came to run in the race. Soto and Rudesal represent the Bee Cave H-E-B. They ran the Cap10K two years ago as an apple and banana and decided to bring back the power couple fruits. 

Bhavna Godhania (left), Selicia Sanchez (middle) and Jessica Loera (right) donned bridal party outfits. Sanchez is getting married on December 7, 2013 and Godhania and Loera are two of her bridesmaids. This is the trio’s first time running a 10K and they didn’t train for the race. Nevertheless, they made it through the finish line! Let’s see what kind of whacky costumes next year’s Cap10K will bring!

Same Race, Different Course Times - The Quibblers

AUSTIN, TEXAS -  At approximately 8:29AM local time, Eric Kipkemei Chirchir, 29, crossed the finish line of the Statesmen Capitol 10K run, only 29 minutes and 24 seconds after the race started. Two hours and 28 minutes later, 79 year old Virginia Cisneros crossed that same finish line. Two different people with two different stories, each accomplishing the same goal. Chirchir, who is originally from Kenya, competes professionally in races — marathons, 10Ks, road races, and more — across the country. Cisneros, from Kyle, Texas, is an H-E-B employee who was competing in her first race. Though different in nearly every way, Cisneros and Chirchir both entered today’s Capitol  10K with the same goal, “To finish as fast as I possibly can.” For Chirchir, that meant running the 6.2 miles from the Austin American-Statesmen offices to Auditorium Shores, at a 4:44 mile pace. His 29:24 mark set a new record for the race in its 36th year. “I felt great today,” said Chirchir. “Everything — the weather, the course — it just set up for me perfectly. It means a lot to me to win this race. Racing in Austin, my new home, it means a lot.” Chirchir moved to Austin two years ago, but continues to race in national events. “I love to run. It reminds me of when I was back home, in Kenya,” said Chirchir. “It just brings me so much joy.” Cisneros, on the other hand, ran each mile at a 27 minute 48 second pace. Though she finished her first mile only a minute and a half before Chirchir finished the entire race, Mrs. Cisneros could not have been happier with her performance. “It felt so great to be outside, to be exercising. I don’t get to do that much at my age,” said Cisneros. “My goal for today was to finish this race, and I did, and that is something that I am really proud of.” Though she walked nearly the entire race, with 50 meters left to the finish line, Cisneros broke into a slow trot to cross the line, where she was greeted with a huge cheer by the remaining spectators. “I wanted people to know that I can still move. That age does not limit me as much as people think,” said Cisneros. “Will I regret this in the morning? Most likely. After the race: a glimpse into the often overlooked event staff - The Quibblers

People generally come to these events for the fun, food and camaraderie. The event staff for this year’s Capitol 10K like those things too, but they were at the event for a different purpose. (You know them. They were the ones picking up your trash, telling you to stay on the sidewalk before the race kicked off, and setting up/taking down all the tents at Auditorium Shores before and after the race.)

Two of these behind-the-scenes workers are Brandon Washington and Raymond Aguilera.  But they’re not complaining. In fact, both said they loved working on the event staff for these events.

The reason: (well, main one) The costumes. Brandon’s favorites this year were the Scooby and Shaggy costumes. Raymond, however, was partial to the Captain America costume donned by a little boy. Brandon and Raymond say they work as many of these racing events as possible, yet both agree neither of them holds a candle to South by Southwest (SXSW). “I just like everything there is about South-by,” Brandon said as if describing the perfect relationship. “There is nothing bad to say about those events.” “Yeah,” Raymond assents simply. Well, there you have it. In a world where employee dissatisfaction ranks high, two Austin employees couldn’t be happier. That doesn’t mean throw your trash down with abandon. Both commented that is definitely one aspect of the job they don’t enjoy.

A friendship made in Austin

For some, it’s the thrill of the competition, the adrenaline rush of trying to get the top spot. But for these two BFFs, it’s about having some good ol’ fashioned fun. Dianne Bangle, 40, and Catherine Robb, 42, have been friends for 17 years. Their friendship started over a shared class schedule at UT’s law school and those common connections haven’t diminished through the years. Perhaps sharing these commonalities in a city like Austin is part of the glue that keeps this friendship strong. Though both come from different parts of the country — Dianne from Seattle and Catherine from Virginia, both chose to live in Austin after law school. Both share a love of fitness and compete in many sporting events Austin hosts, like triathlons. During this year’s race, they brought out Dianne’s daughter Elenor, 9, to compete in the Capitol 10K for the first time.

                  [Dianne, Elenor, and Catherine after the race.]    Catherine is Elenor’s godmother and bought the special capes they are sporting with today’s race in mind. They call them “their superhero capes.” They couldn’t remember their run time, but that’s because they don’t keep track.  They said they do it to have fun, be together, and take part in a city they love. Somewhere in there just might be the key to long-time relationship success.
