No, Austin Metcalf died because Karmelo Anthony, suspended from school and extracurricular activities for bringing a knife to school, went to a track meet he was technically barred from attending and, surprise surprise, brought a knife where it would have been prohibited. See, in civilized society, we refer to that as a pattern of behavior. Anthony demonstrated repeatedly that he did not care about rules or consequences, so now he's paying the price.
For everyone talking about "jury of your peers", that means fellow citizens, not their racial make up.

The prosecution put on over 20 witnesses who all verified that Anthony was the instigator. You cannot claim self-defense when you are the instigator, under the law. The defense put on six witnesses, many of whom, according to professional legal scholars who observed the case, only bolstered the prosecution's case.
Anthony was under academic suspension for bringing a knife to school, and was also barred from extracurricular activities. In short, he had no business being at the track meet that day, yet he went where he wasn't supposed to be, carrying a knife that would have been prohibited even were he allowed to be there, and started a fight and killed someone.
He was not engaged in self-defense, and one must wonder why he was there in the first place, being prohibited, and why he decided to bring a knife.
Law abiding citizens do not go places they're not supposed to go, and they don't instigate fights in those places.
Why was he there? And why did he bring a weapon? The only logical conclusion is that his presence was for illegitimate purposes and the weapon was because his intentions were bad

Karmelo Anthony was deprived of his right to be tried by a jury of his peers. A majority white jury convicting a Black child of a crime and giving him 35 to life is a modern day lynching.
Not even close. Lynchings historically did not require any actual crime on the part of the person being lynched.
Anthony committed a crime, and killed someone. And with good behavior he will be eligible for parole in half the time sentences, or less that twenty years. That means he could conceivably be out by the age of 36. Hardly a life sentence, particularly when his victim was killed near instantly.

the self-defense claim only works if you don't go to places you shouldn't be and provocate. Karmelo Anthony was suspended from school for bringing a knife and Bard from extracurricular activities. He had no business being where he was because of that. Yet he brought that self same knife that got him suspended to a school event that he was barred from, went to the tent for a team he had nothing to do with, and began to antagonize and provoke. And he went there with a weapon that he had his hand on while daring anyone to do anything about his presence. That is textbook instigation. And instigation is not covered by self-defense law, especially when you're not on your own property.

Anthony got himself in trouble taking a knife to a school function. A school function he technically wasn't allowed to attend due to being suspended for bringing that selfsame knife to school. Then he enters another team's tent and, according to over twenty witnesses, proceeds to instigate a confrontation before stabbing an unarmed person to death.
But your stance is that the unarmed kid deserved his fate because of the color of his skin.
