Once again blown away by people misreading Lorgar.
On reddit, I keep seeing "The Emperor was mad at his slow compliance rate but the reason for that was because the Word Bearers were taking time to win planets over with relatively bloodless methods and remaining to ensure a smooth transition" takes, that this is proof he was a good, peaceful and kind man before Chaos.
That's naive. I'm sorry.
Lorgar's already spent 7yrs committing a planetwide forced conversion on Colchis. Lorgar makes it sound relatively mundane when he talks about it (and he seems to avoid talking about it) but that's because he really doesn't want to say "I subjugated an entire populace and mass murdered anyone who refused to convert"
-ADB on Lorgar
Consider what he's actually doing during his Great Crusade era compliances, what it requires, what is involved.
Lorgar is the Spanish Conquistadors; he's invading a planet and forcing a religion on the citizens. He's committing cultural genocide. He's killing anyone who doesn't get with the program; there is absolutely zero room for religious tolerance in the eyes of the Word Bearers. What do you think is happening to the people who don't want to convert? Do you think they're going "Welp to each their own"? No, dude, they're being killed, enslaved or lobotomized, which is then used to scare any other reluctant citizens into converting.
It's textbook colonialism.
And yeah Lorgar and the Word Bearers think they're doing the people a kindness; they're bringing them to the light of the one true god, they're helping them eradicate their Heretical barbarian cultural practices. But that's religious psycho logic. That's Ben Shapiro and the Daily Wire insisting Europeans actually helped the Native Americans by "civilizing them" with Judeo-Christian values. Like yeah sure they murdered millions of indigenous people in the process and brutally enforced European culture/religion on them and viewed them as ignorant savages, but they did it to help them! It was for a good reason, come onnn!
Just because he was killing less people than, say, the Lion and was sticking around to oversee their religious/cultural transition does not mean he was a good guy. He was just a different kind of oppressive, bigoted imperialist.
In some ways he's worse, because some post-compliance planets are allowed to keep some of their cultural heritage, as long as it vibes with basic tenets of the Imperial Truth. "Pay your tithes, run a secular society, don't fuck around with xenos and we'll leave you be" basically. You have some amount of autonomy. When Lorgar and Angron show up at Nuceria in Betrayer, the Nucerians are taken aback because they haven't even really heard from the Imperium since they joined 200 years ago.
The Word Bearers, meanwhile, become an occupying force for YEARS to ensure the eradication of your faith and culture. They stick around. You don't want the Imperium sticking around.
It's basic unreliable narrator shit. Just because a character tells you they're a good guy doesn't mean it's true. Of course they think they're a good guy, they're biased.
For instance, Lorgar insists Monarchia was the "perfect city" but what little we know isn't that great. Cyrene is a teenage sex worker who has to walk around with a knife strapped to her thigh for safety. They're stoning people. They're turning heretics and criminals alike into servitors. Some guy got lynched for selling dog meat as lamb. It's an oppressive theocratic society.
In conclusion: you do not, under any circumstances, gotta hand it to Lorgar.
Related, the Emperor being mad at Lorgar wasn't because the Emperor was a more moral person or had an issue with the cruelty and subjugation. He was upset that Lorgar's brutal colonization and subjugation wasn't quick enough.
Yet another example of how different people within the Imperium can be at odds with one another while still being equally horrible in their own right.
For beings called Space Marines these fuckers sure do spend a lot of time fighting on the ground

the style of writing is not the problem, not the genre, not the subject matter, not even the words themselves. the SINGLE defining issue with the “Tumblr Prose” style i was trying to tackle is that it’s front loaded with imagery and metaphor and completely lacking in sense, reason, symmetry, motion, conveying information. i agree that plenty of writing can sound good and feel good to read when it’s all metaphor and visceral images but it needs to have a baseline that can carry it through or else the tail wags the dog and it’s all cool “quotable” lines and no substance, nothing to read between the lines, no character
It's because Metaphors are a thing smart writers use, so the more Metaphors your prose has the more smarter the writing is!

genuine question, not trying to be unkind: in what way is “movies that are not made for children” an incomprehensibly complex idea
I don't know the full context of that conversation, but I can easily see why "movies that are not made for children" could be called an incomprehensible category.
It's because it could be defined in completely different ways, and includes content that cannot be meaningfully grouped together.
It can include movies that children are legally not allowed to watch (which is a shitty concept), movies made without children in mind, but that still attract children (like most action or horror movies), movies made by someone who's trying to be an edgelord on purpose because they believe "adult" media should be offensive (like a large part of cartoons that are marketed as for adults), movies that are considered too complex for children for some socially constructed reason.
In general, the idea that something is not made for children should invite skepsis and digging deeper.
The Brave Little Toaster (great movie btw) for instance is a good example of an animation that was targeted at teenagers and young adults but became popular with kids. It was picked up by an arthouse film distributor for the theatrical release and was nominated for an award at the film festival for being the best film there (it lost because it was animated).
So like, the brave little toaster is technically in the same category as A Serbian Film.
you did not seriously just compare an animated kids film called “the brave little toaster” to a Serbian film, about a pornstar in a snuff film, which has been banned in multiple countries and cited by many as the most disturbing movie ever made, because they were both art films.
I'm not, I'm just saying that there's a very wide variety in adult movies
In what way is brave little toaster an adult movie I am genuinely asking, because the book is intended for children, and the movie is intended for children. A kids’ film that chooses to treat its subject matter in the same way as a film made for adults isn’t a movie made for adults, it’s just a good kids’ film.
I'm crying, the brave little toaster is owned by Disney. Yes it was technically made by an independent studio but they needed Disney's permission and funding as Disney had owned film rights to the book for years by then.
as the guy that made that comment. this is what I mean by "movies for adults" being incomprehensible. You're not going to get people to understand it. They are Going to recommend the brave little toaster because they want to. Just say you don't want to watch it. Maybe give a genre that's your fancy. People get genres more than they get "movies for adults"
I feel like a lot of the "misunderstanding" stems from most people assuming that "movies for adults" is code for "good" and "movies for kids" is code for "bad".
Which, in fairness, a lot of people do use them that way. But the OP has made it abundantly clear that when they use the term "moves for adults" what they mean is "a movie that was made for an audience of adults" as opposed to a movie made for general audiences or children. There was no judgment of quality or artistic integrity in any of the OPs comments
So, from what I'm seeing, it's not people not understanding or finding the concept incomprehensible. It's people who do not want to acknowledge that the movies they like are made for children because of some perceived stigma.
