Hey listen, shop floor organizer here. The very REASON that bosses these days insist on teamwork is that they want to take socializing at work out of the Union’s hands. Humans crave social activities and bonding with the people around them. That’s how organizing starts. And some bosses try and separate the workers from each other sufficiently so they won’t come together at all.

Late capitalism is smarter about it.

Outside of work, those people could still meet. But if the company offers their own social events, their own team time, if they make the concept of teamwork and socializing part of the job then no one wants to do it twice. They control the narrative at social gatherings like that. You won’t get together at the bar and talk shop if your boss is there.

Reclaim your socializing time. That’s where the power is.

I’m not defending her or anything but honestly, what do you expect? She’s a mainstream American politician. She might be better than most but if any politician at this point ran on a platform of not deporting anyone then they’d instantly be seen as too radical and “idealistic” by the media and the general public. I mean it took us a very long time before most people got on board with the idea that having a health care system similar to basically every other first world country wasn’t too radical.

The context for this was that a 95-year old Nazi war-crime suspect who happened to live in the district for which she is running for Congress was finally deported (he was actually ordered to be deported 2004 but no country would accept him until now, when Germany finally agreed), and the GOP attacked her for it, and then when she clarified that yes, she still wants to abolish ICE but some deportation will be necessary, like the deportation of Nazis suspected of being war criminals, the left attacked her for that, because that makes her a cop.

One thing I think about now and then was this thing that happened in this class that I don't remember what it was called, where we learned things like sex ed and how to deal with your emotions, and one of the 'how to deal with your emotions' things was a speaker talking about how if you want to get a handle on your problems, something like that, you need the right 'tools'.

To demonstrate this point, he picked two volunteers from the class, gave them each an apple, gave one a peeler and the other a toothpick, and told them to peel their apples. He gave them a minute, I think.

Of course, the one with the peeler got a lot farther than the one with the toothpick.

But the one with the toothpick surprised the speaker by figuring out how to actually peel the apple with it, and had gotten a decent amount done.

He had never seen someone do that before.

The speaker recovered and just pushed forward with the narrative of the 'right tools'.

And it just occurred to me how perfect of a metaphor this is for disability, and being neuro atypical.

We have toothpicks, and we can figure out ways to get things done with those toothpicks, maybe not as well and certainly not as quickly, but get it done, and actually quite alright.

But it's not good enough for most of the abled and the neurotypical, because we didn't use the 'right tools'.

Tools we don't have.

Maybe even tools we can't use if they are given to us.

But we have our toothpicks. We can peel our apples. And a peeled apple is still a peeled apple, no matter how it was done.
