• Review: Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow •
For some reason, when I first heard about this book, it didn’t appeal to me. There was something about the way this platonic love story about two dysfunctional friends who make video games together was framed that made me go, “eh, that seems too upmarket and too literary and too sad for me.”
But. I unabashedly love Mythic Quest – which is, at its core, a platonic love story about two dysfunctional friends who make video games together – and when someone told me this book is basically literary Mythic Quest, I reconsidered.
Now that I’ve read it, I can say that it *is* literary Mythic Quest *and* it is quite sad. BuI’m very glad I read it.
The title (taken from a Macbeth monologue), should have tipped me off to this, but I loved how bookish it is. I loved that these characters all have huge vocabularies that they use, as if it’s normal to drop words like “jejune” into every day conversation. I loved how flawed and stubborn and impossible Sam and Sadie are. And Marx. I loved thoughtful, caring Marx. (Then again, how could I not?)
Though this book wasn’t what I would consider fun (that would be a tropey romcom), it also wasn’t the sort of emotional torture I imagined it might be (I mean, it was here and there, but in ways that echo life, for good and for ill), and when I reached the last sentence, it left me with a sense of bittersweet peace. I have a feeling I’ll be thinking about this book for a very long time.

This is what time travel is. It’s looking at a person, and seeing them in the present and the past, concurrently. And that mode of transport only worked with those one had known a significant time.

There’s a girl with brown eyes who reminds me of the first book I ever loved. When I look at her, I feel like there might be another universe in her. … I know there are other books that are easier to get my hands on, but none are half as good as her.

I was talking to a kid in my daughter’s class today, and she said that she thought it would be fun to write a story about the Titanic, but with supernatural creatures.
So I said, “Yeah, that would great! What would the creatures do? Would they save the Titanic from sinking?”
And she gave me the most disgusted look. I have never seen a 9 year old face look so appalled.
“No,” she said, speaking very clearly so as to never be so grossly misunderstood again, “they’re going to eat the passengers.”
God I hope she lets me read it.
i have to tell you something that will lower your entire opinion of me
when i was 12 i made flyers for my fanfiction and handed them out a train station
im blown away by the sheer confidence this act required. if anything my opinion has been raised. the poise. the fearlessness. the laughing in the face of death. i’m speechless
☕ Jared's characterization in fanon* :) (sorry about that)
(no worries!)
where do i begin… there are so many ways people go wrong with him and all of them are aggravating. portraying him as a deliberately cruel and awful “friend” who’s constantly brushing off evan’s many attempts to talk to him and has to be Put In His Place by connor, or by a Suddenly Courageous evan emboldened by connor? making him straight and/or vaguely homophobic and/or ready to jump right to “lol are you guys fucking or something” if he hears that evan and connor are hanging out? completely flipping that pancake and making him out to be perpetually teary-eyed over his tragically unrequited feelings for evan, the one and only problem in his life and the only thing he ever thinks about? having him reference memes as his main or only means of humor? it’s all bad
(Send me a ☕️ and a topic and I’ll talk about how I feel about it)

Very inch resting how the Politician posits that Payton can’t feel to the same degree/in the same way as everyone else, and pins this on his being ambitious to the point of repressing his emotion, and highlight that by textually saying that River was his one outlet to allow himself to feel. But they also imply that Payton is definitely dealing with fear of rejection and abandonment, constantly questioning whether his family really wants him and accepts him.
However, was I the only one that saw definite gay subtext in all that? Patyon is afraid he can’t feel like everyone else, but the one person he can feel with just so happens to be the boy he slept with? I don’t think that’s a coincidence. And let me just say, I definitely relate growing up thinking I had sociopathic (not necessarily violent) tendencies because I just didn’t relate to people, and I didn’t think I was capable of love, because I didn’t know what love could even be for someone like me.
If you’re telling me that Payton doesn’t grow up with only his mother ever making him feel loved, with the rest of his family shunning him and bullying him, with him putting all his hopes and dreams on being elected to office because that’ll mean that people want him, with him probably subconsciously needing to conform to the idea of a politician or a president, aka married to a woman… I think Payton’s “sociopathy” is just a symptom of being closeted.
He struggles to be open about the fact that yes he was in love with River and was attracted to him. He threatens to tell the school that they slept together because he thinks River is just as insecure about it as he is (he’s not). Of course I think Payton really does love Alice but I definitely get the vibes that he loves the idea of her more than her. He may well be into her, Payton has probably been attracted to just River and Alice in his whole life, and that’s okay.
He doesn’t have to have any typical gay or bi experience for these feelings and this confusion to be valid! My point is that Payton tries to convince himself that he’s a sociopath because he’s ruthlessly pragmatic and his ambition causes him to discount people’s feelings, and the problem is trying to be a politician. The reality is, I think, that he tries to convince himself that he’s a sociopath because he’s afraid to be vulnerable, because then he’d reveal just how hurt and alone he is, and he’d have to be open about the fact that possibly the most significant relationship in his life was with a man.
Like, when you have to hide and repress such a large part of yourself, that has consequences! I relate to this concept so fucking much? I’m an actor to my family, and so the idea of emotions got all fucked up to me growing up. I don’t know what’s real. I don’t know how to be real. And going a step further than Payton’s fictional family, when I’m being told by media and culture that I’m sinful and disgusting and my family watches crime shows and they equate sexual deviance with moral impurity those wires get crossed. I start to believe that I’m nothing but a pervert, just because I liked boys. And when you’re a sick sexual monster, it’s not much more effort to convince yourself that you’re basically the same as some kind of amoral serial killer too.
Like homophobia is a hell of a drug kids! Just my tea sis!
I can’t believe The Dragon Prince is really coming after me with goth nerd/jock brother and sister dynamic I can feel the sassy sibling banter radiating from these two already.

i love how this chapter shows once again how intelligent katsuki is. this kid has gotten praise for his powerful quirk since he was four, was used to being the leader since early childhood and then when he finds out that what he has is not enough to get where he wants he just. changes his mindset
someone else would have tried to resist change and become bitter about it but katsuki is like ok. i’m not the strongest i’m not good enough to beat all might i’m not invincible and i’m vulnerable so how do i get where i want to be? what’s the smartest way to use what i have? i’m not the best yet so what should i fix? what do i need to work on?
katsuki has a powerful quirk and a thirst for victory and pride but it’s his intelligence that is going to make him the best version of himself and a great hero
