Nobody does it like Taylor and her black and white albums
the rise of AI art isn't surprising to us. for our entire lives, the attitude towards our skills has always been - that's not a real thing. it has been consistently, repeatedly devalued.
people treat art - all forms of it - as if it could exist by accident, by rote. they don't understand how much art is in the world. someone designed your home. someone designed the sign inside of your local grocery store. when you quote a character or line from something in media, that's a line a real person wrote.
"i could do that." sure, but you didn't. there's this joke where a plumber comes over to a house and twists a single knob. charges the guy 10k. the guy, furious, asks how the hell the bill is so high. the plumber says - "turning the knob was a dollar. the knowledge is the rest of the money."
the trouble is that nobody believes artists have knowledge. that we actively study. that we work hard, beyond doing our scales and occasionally writing a poem. the trouble is that unless you are already framed in a museum or have a book on a shelf or some kind of product, you aren't really an artist. hell, because of where i post my work, i'll never be considered a poet.
the thing that makes you an artist is choice. the thing that makes all art is choice. AI art is the fetid belief that art is instead an equation. that it must answer a specific question. Even with machine learning, AI cannot make a choice the way we can - because the choices we make have always been personal, complicated. our skills cannot be confined to "prompt and execution." what we are "solving" isn't just a system of numbers - it is how we process our entire existence. it isn't just "2 and 2 is 4", it's staring hard at the numbers and making the four into an alligator. it's rearranging the letters to say ow and it is the ugly drawing we make in the margin.
at some point, you will be able to write something by feeding my work into a machine. it will be perfectly legible and even might sound like me. but a machine doesn't understand why i do these things. it can be taught preferences, habits, statistical probability. it doesn't know why certain vowels sound good to me. it doesn't know the private rules i keep. it doesn't know how to keep evolving.
"but i want something to exist that doesn't exist yet." great. i'm glad you feel creative. go ahead and pay a fucking artist for it.
this is all saying something we all already knew. the sad fucking truth: we have to die to remind you. only when we're gone do we suddenly finally fucking mean something to you. artists are not replicable. we each genuinely have a skill, talent, and process that makes us unique. and there's actual quiet power in everything we do.
You shouldn’t date or become serious friends/partners with someone if you can’t stomach the thought of being stuck in a car or train with them for 16 hours.
Here’s my logic:
You should be able to work together to solve unexpected problems like fixing a flat tire or getting lost in an unfamiliar station
You should feel comfortable and safe enough around this person that you can sit in comfortable silence
You should be able to keep each other interested and deal with each others boredom in a healthy way
If you’re gonna form a long term partnership with someone you should probably be able to tolerate each other while locked in a small box for a few hours
you wanted to be a good friend, because you loved your friends, but the truth was that everyone else somehow had a pamphlet on being normal that you never received. most of the time you learn by trial-and-error. you are terrified of the next big mistake you make, because it seems like the rules are completely arbitrary.
you've learned to keep the prickly parts of your personality in a stormcloud under your bed - as if they're a second version of you; one that will make your friends hate you. it feels feral, burning, ugly.
instead, you have assembled habits based on the statistical likelihood of pleasing others. you're a good listener, which is to say - if you do speak up, you might end up saying the wrong thing and scaring off someone, but people tend to like someone-who-listens. or you've got no true desires or goals, because people like it when you're passive, mutable. you're "not easy to fluster" which is to say - your emotions are fundamentally uninteresting to others around you; so you've learned to control them to a degree that you can no longer really feel them happening.
you have long suspected something is wrong with you, but most of the time, googling doesn't help. you are so-used to helping-yourself, alone and with no handbook. the reek of your real self feels more like a horrible joke - you wake up, and, despite all your preparations, suddenly the whole house is full of smoke. the real you is someone waiting to ruin your other-life, the one where you're normal and happy. the real-self is unpredictable, angry.
your real self snarls when people infantilize the whole situation. because if you were really suffering, everyone seems to think you'd be completely unable to cope. but you already learned the rules, so you do know how to cope, and you have fucking been coping. it's not black-and-white. it's not that you are healed during the other times - it's just that you're able to fucking try. and honestly, whenever you show symptoms, it's a really fucking bad sign.
because the symptoms you have are ugly and unmanageable for others. your symptoms aren't waifish white girl things. they're annoying and complicated. they will be the subject of so many pretentious instagram reels. if they cared about you, they'd just show up on time. you care, a lot, so deeply it burns you. you like to picture a world where the comments read if they loved you, they'd never need glasses to see. but since that's a rule you've seen repeated - "one must never be late or you are a bad friend" - you constantly worry about being late and leave agonizingly early. there are no words for how you feel when you're still late; no matter how hard you were trying.
so you have to make up for it. you have to make up for that little horrible real you that you keep locked in a cabinet. you are bad at answering emails so every project you make has to be perfect. you are weird and sensitive so you have to learn to be funny and interesting. you are an inconvenience to others, so you become as smooth as possible, buffing out all the rough parts.
all this. all this. so people can pass their hands over you and just tell you just the once -how good you are. you're a good friend. you're loveable.
i dont know exactly how to articulate this in a way other people havent but everything is too fast now. 24/7 news cycle, online focuses that last for hours instead of months or years, songs written just so ten seconds can go viral. movies and books churned out to meet some nebulous income quota. idk. im motion sick
you know when you watch an older movie and its actually edited well. like the shots are long and the cuts are spaced and you can actually breathe....yeah
Wow, Baymax is literally everything conservatives hate...

Alain de Botton, Essays in Love [transcript in ALT]
“A while back I shared a conversation with a man about his life. (Now I should say this was man with a fine education, with real depth of character, and who had achieved high visibility and considerable accomplishments, a success in every imaginable way.) At one point I asked him what he most wanted in life. He had a very clear answer. I would have imagined his naming something existential, something noble or altruistic or even eternal. What he most wanted in life? He named a certain Italian-made sports car, phenomenally expensive. He said he wanted one of these since he was boy. And I told him, “Well good for you, if that’s what you really want. Good for you!” But it isn’t what I thought he would say. Not even close. So I asked him why? Why this sports car? He told me about the engineering, the durability, the handling. He spoke of the beauty of the design. A very impressive car. I asked if he could say more, go deeper? He spoke of this car’s being rare, not many of them made, quite unique. I asked if he could go deeply yet? Why did that all matter?
Our conversation wound its way back to his childhood. He had been raised in neglect and poverty: ragged clothes, holes in his shoes, the object of merciless and cruel teasing as a young boy. And he had vowed that some day he was going to really matter, he was going to “make it,” and he would prove it, for everyone to see, by owning this particular Italian sports car. By this point in our conversation we were both laughing and crying together: crying because his appalling childhood which he had survived and conquered; laughing because he was still carting around this desire for the Italian car, and what that would mean. And he realized that his desire was a really good thing – his desire for the dignity of his birthright, to claim his self worth, to succeed against impossible odds, to offer his own learning as a leader for others. He had simply fixed his desire on this car… and he realized that the car just scratched the surface of this God-given desire. He said finally, “maybe I don’t need to claim the car; I just need to claim my life.” And I said to him, again and on a deeper level, “Good for you.”
Listen to your desire. Our capacity to desire is God-given. No matter how flimsy our desires, no matter how conflicted or shadowy or duplicitous or even wrong our desires may be on the surface, they are connected to something deep within our souls that really demand attention, and that is good. Our desires are worth listening to.”
— Br. Curtis Almquist
no one is required to be a “responsible adult” 100% of the time. there are plenty of aspects of adult life–finances, employment, housing, relationship negotiation, etc–where yeah, responsibility and maturity are very very important.
BUT. finding time to play, to be silly, to relax and be a bit ridiculous and indulge in childish joys–these are fundamental aspects of being human, at any age. being an adult doesn’t mean giving up the things that make you happy; ideally, it means you get to choose what happiness looks like to you.

expressing love by giving them the bigger half. learning about a topic they’re interested in so they have someone to discuss it with. listening to their music and making them playlists to connect with them. remembering the little details they mention in conversations. little actions that show so much love.
Honestly if your response to "I dont have many skills that would be useful in a post-capitalist society" is "so I guess I'll just be pursuing my intellectual hobbies as my contribution to my community" instead of "so I guess I'll be doing dishes in the cafeteria/janitorial work/manual labor" you should really reconsider how you come at the very concept of work and society as a leftist. Is socialism no longer appealing if you have to do the work you previously took for granted? Is the liberation of the proletariat not worth it if you have to contribute something besides your dream job in academia or leading support groups? Are you really "too good" for "that type" of work, even if it is for a world where no one starves?
we will still have hobbies/run d&d/learn other languages under socialism - in fact, we would likely have far more time to pursue them than under capitalism - but when we think of our future labor, we ought to consider the "menial" tasks that keep society running; loading boxes onto trucks, cooking in a factory kitchen, packaging medical supplies for distribution, building new homes as a worker and not an architect. these jobs will never disappear, and to assume that someone else will do them while you lead workshops or go to school to become a trained professional is to announce your continuing loyalty to petite bourgeois ethics. The dream of socialism is not a fantasy where you continue to do the exact same thing you want to do under capitalism, but now with a clear conscience about it. It's to build a better world as one global movement, to lift up the most oppressed and downtrodden from the muck; a task which requires, above all else, heavy and thankless work that we must be prepared and happy to undertake if we ever hope to succeed.
Still, with the advent of automated tech such as robots who can do menial work, those menial jobs may no longer need to be human. It is a real thing, factory line workers no longer need to be human. What I mean to imply by this is in the event that nobody wants to take menial jobs, automaton can take over and make the process more efficient and streamlined. But the ownership of these automaton should be in the hands of the workers and not the capitalists.
My favourite trope is when the girl is dating a guy who’s nice but who’s not right for her and then a guy who’s just like her, who understands her and gets to know her more than anyone else shows up and she begins to have an internal struggle in which, above all, she denies her feelings while her looks and smiles give her away (there’s also some kiss when she’s still with the guy…) until the guy she’s dating finds out and she has to make the decision and finally listens to her heart and chooses the second guy.
Everything Everywhere All At Once is impossible to condense but. your mom loves you. your mom would do anything for you. she is incapable of expressing these things to you in a way that you can truly understand. she doesn’t understand you because she can’t. you can’t understand her either. you know that she would die for you but she can never give you a goddamn compliment or an apology or acknowledgement that maybe you were right all along. you know that she loves you but you don’t trust her not to hurt you if you share all the things you are and want to be and could be. she has always taught you that family is the most important thing, that when everything and everyone else fades, family is all you will have left. nothing feels safer than garlic and choi sum and tomatoes and eggs. you still haven’t told her your new name. the first coming out was awful, you never want to do that again. she drove for five hours to drop off groceries because she knows you have papers due and might not have time to shop. she is finally proud of you after all the stupid shit you did and said when you didn’t think you would live till 20. you know that she blames herself. you don’t think she could’ve done any better but fuck how is anyone is supposed to parent when she did most everything right and still you came oh so close to never seeing a brighter future. she drives you home and as you chat you realize that a few years ago you two could never have had a civil conversation that didn’t devolve into shouting. you realize that there are some things that you will never talk about with her because you don’t want to risk that again.
you know that she loves you. god, if only she would understand.
