Inktober day 13: “ash.” Thanks to a round-trip drive to Oakland today, I’m caught up with Inktober prompts again. This one was inspired by something a co-worker said last week about preserving her ash-covered boots. You see, our hometown burned down almost a year ago. Like so many others, she lost her home, and it was weeks after the fire was out before she was allowed to return to her property to sift through the rubble and see if anything survived. The boots she wore that day were set aside, and now that she’s moved to a permanent home, she’s rediscovered them, still covered in the ashes of her former home. Another reminder of all that was lost on November 8, 2018. We’re coming up on the one year anniversary and there are days when it doesn’t seem real, and others when I can pretend it isn’t.
