Let’s stop autocorrecting people’s existence! 💬 I started embracing that I’m a flaming 🔥 bisexual years ago. ✌️ (If you know, you know 😜). As soon as the words, “I’m bisexual” fly out of my mouth I’m greeted with, “Don’t you mean pansexual? Don’t you mean bicurious? Bisexual isn’t a sexuality. You can’t be attracted to more than one gender.” Uff. Everyone was “autocorrecting” my sexuality instead of taking what I said at face value. Discouraged and upset, I’d scurry back to being my closeted self -- the person everyone deemed was straight and could live blissfully unaware of the real me. As if my bisexual loving self was making the room uncomfy. I just wanted to belong as who I was. 🥺 Everyone tries to reassure me that labels don’t matter. Love who you want! Wear what you want! But when I say that I’m bisexual and met with claims of how it doesn’t exist, doesn’t that say I can’t truly be my true self? Labels do matter. How I want you to address or acknowledge me is important, and you should take the time to get it correct. This is a huge problem in the queer community and honestly, there’s a simple fix. Listen and correct yourself until you get it right. It’s not hard to call someone by the right pronouns or name. It’s not hard to acknowledge someone’s true sexuality instead of assigning them one you deem fit. Even, in my case, if you’re getting it “half” right, you can do better. Honestly, if you don’t do any of these things, you are an ✨asshole.✨ Being a good traveler and global citizen means being a good ally. To start being a better ally, ask queer folx about our experiences. Learn how our lives are different than yours. We exist and are so valid even if parts of the world want to exclude us. So to all my bisexual folx, happy Bi Visibility Day! I see you! I celebrate you! I love you just the way you are. 💖💜💙 Ask us how we see and experience the world, you might be surprised at what you will learn. 🌈 (at Vilnius, Lithuania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFfJ2AiAPgt/?igshid=1549fgbeh3h1d
Why does it feel like we need a suffragette movement in 2020? *Sigh* Just another instance of history threatening to repeat itself. Today, 100 years ago, the 19th Amendment was ratified in every U.S. state. Seems like something to celebrate. Yet, recent events have made it painfully obvious that voting isn’t a right guaranteed to all. NEWSFLASH: we still are suffering from voting suppression today! What does that even mean? Examples of voter suppression include: -Closing polling places early and denying people their constitutional right to vote -Eliminating polling places in marginalized communities making it hard for them to vote -Eliminating funding from USPS in attempts to eliminate mail-in voting as a feasible option -Trying to pass voter ID laws to disenfranchise marginalized communities At its core, voter suppression targets marginalized communities making it harder for them to cast their vote and have their voices be heard. This isn’t anything new. Looking back at history here are some examples of voter suppression: -Poll taxes -Literary tests -Threats of violence -Refusal to give out ballots or count votes from POC Any of this sounding vaguely familiar? Even though the 19th Amendment claimed voting could not be denied “on account of sex,” women of color weren’t able to vote until 1965. It took the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to grant WOC the right to be heard and vote. Mind you, this was after both the 15th and 19th Amendments were passed, both of which should have already given WOC the right to vote! And to top it off, the suffragette movement wasn’t spearheaded by white women! Ever heard of Adelina “Nina” Otero-Warren? (Just FYI, Nina is credited by historians as being monumental in ratifying the 19th Amendment in New Mexico.) Probably not, because you’ve only learned the whitewashed version of the suffragette movement if you learned about it at all. Black suffragists were often left out of the movement even though they have been responsible for these monumental strides made in history. Today, read about Black suffragists. Educate yourself on voter suppression. Take action. Don’t let history repeat itself. (at Sugarloaf Cove) https://www.instagram.com/p/CECz7FKAEfz/?igshid=199161jt8bam0

TW: Mentions diet culture TL;DR Overcoming internalized fatphobia and toxic diet culture during my travels Travel nurtures my inner foodie. But this was a title I was terrified of for years. My brain equated ‘foodie’ to losing control. Food, to me, had to be earned. I internalized fatphobia to the point where my self-worth hinged upon the macros that filled my stomach. Even my closest relationships spewed toxicity and told me to strive toward skinny. I was only worthy of love if I wore a single-digit sized pair of jeans. What bullshit. Two years ago, I finally called it quits when it comes to diet culture and my toxic relationship with food. I was determined to experience every morsel of culture I could -- starting with the food. Goodbye to all calorie-tracking apps. See ya to fad diets and weight loss supplements. Hasta la vista to any eating behavior that guilted me into hating myself. Say hello to food romancing my tastebuds years after I feasted on the last bites. Embracing the title ‘foodie’ forced me to address my unhealthy relationship with food. Food finally became a point of joy in my life. It’s a joy I hold dear today. Every glass of wine, pint of beer, plate of pasta, basket of carbs, bed of greens, pinch of unique spices sent me on a culinary trip. My trips no longer seem two-dimensional and lacking flavor. They were suddenly so robust and bursting with zest. https://www.instagram.com/p/CDvBs-oAAsF/?igshid=3uubi3jwcmq0
I don’t feel like my shiny, quirky self until I’ve had a cup of coffee in the a.m. That miraculous bean juice takes over my body and I radiate. Maybe a slight dramatic explanation of how much I love coffee, but it’s true. I have at least three cups of coffee or tea a day, which you might have seen showcased in my Insta stories more than once. I’m shameless. 😂 I’m seeing lots of new faces around here lately, so I wanted to reintroduce myself. Hello! It’s me, Martha the face and mastermind behind Quirky Globetrotter! My travel blog is a culmination of feminist travel stories as well as an empowering resource encouraging travelers to look for authentic experiences around the world. Here’s the scoop on what makes me tick. I’d love to hear your responses in the comments! 🥰 First time on an airplane? ✈️ For my 16th birthday! I went to Boston and then took the bus to NYC. Choose your poison! 🍷🥂🍺🍸🍹 Red wine. I’m a huge sucker for Shiraz, but any robust wine will bring on a happy dance. 💃 Three words that describe you: Bold, brave, bubbly, brainiac. Yes, I know that’s four words, and here’s a fifth: rebel ;) Also, the inkslinger in me has an undeniable love for alliterations. You might have caught that drift lol Your favorite book? 📚 The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George. I cannot rave about this book enough! The depth of emotion and soul bared in this book is nothing short of captivating. What do you sing at karaoke night? WHITNEY HOUSTON, hands down. No, I’m cannot perfectly slay ballads, but Whitney jams harness the power to get everyone on their feet and singing along. An absolute queen! Proudest accomplishment? 🏆 Saying goodbye to the traditional 9-to-5 job! I can gush forever about how much I love my job and how fulfilled I am working for myself and toward my biggest passions. On a personal note, I’m so fucking proud of the emotional work I’ve also done this year, especially the progress I’ve made with body positivity and cutting toxicity out of my life. Shout out to all my queens and kings working on themselves every day; I see you polishing your crown! My mind is often running at 253 million mph. I literally put warp-speed to shame 😂 But I’ve been slowly preprogramming my brain to understand that less is more. I don’t have to see everything a destination offers, just want is going to be a memorable experience. I can say that without a doubt this beach definitely chased away my quarantine blues. 😍 Do you believe in slow travel? Alright universe, whisk me off to Neverland! 🧚♀️ That’s exactly how I felt hiking in the mountains as the mist hugged the alpine meadows and towering coniferous treeline. It was nothing short of mystical. This was the perfect destination to spend my birthday a few weeks ago! Definitely got in ample amounts of reading tales of far off places and taking in the fresh, rejuvenating air. 🧘♀️ Thank you all for the thoughtful and sweet birthday wishes! I felt so loved and spoiled! 🥰 Here’s to another year of travels, though they will be much slower paced than before, but I’m starting to appreciate more secluded and remote destinations more and more! What storybook-like destinations should I add onto my bucket list for the next year? As always, mask up and arm yourself with good hygiene practices whenever you’re leaving your home! 🧼 Safe and happy journeys to you all! 💕 . . . . . . #slowtravel #womenwhohike #isolationholiday #wanderlust #nature #outdoortravels #nationalpark #nationalparkgeek #hikingtrails #mountainscape #naturesgarden #passportready #ipulledoverforthis #roadtripusa #roadtrippin #hiddengems #welltraveled #travelwriter #traveltheworld #travelblogger #getlost #travelsafely #olympicnationalpark #olympic #olympicpeninsula (at Hurricane Ridge Olympic National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCmH7jjg-8f/?igshid=1krzxkxgk1xhj

✋Alright, I’ve got a confession to make: I have a serious aversion to taking photos of myself on my travels, especially those that show me off head to toe. Writing that out makes me want to jump out of my skin and disappear! 👻 Yes, I am a body-positive activist, but at the end of the day, I still find it hard to love and respect the cellulite fields and dimples that grace my own body. During lockdown, I began to obsess over my body again. I fell back into unhealthy eating habits and ways of thinking. I was slowly crumbling down the temple of body positivity that took years to build up. There were days I didn’t feel a sliver of love for myself. 💔 I hit a low point last week, that made me re-evaluate how I treat myself. Which got me thinking, I’ve got to celebrate myself more! 🥳 Regardless of where we are on our body positivity journeys, we deserve oodles of love and to celebrate all our accomplishments. 🤗 🚫I’ll no longer delete the photos I don’t like of myself on vacation. ✅I’m going to take more photos that celebrate my body and uniqueness. 🚫I won’t allow fatphobia to destruct my inner peace. Fatphobia will also no longer control how I travel. ✅I’m going to live loud and proud because of who I am, regardless of whether society considers me pretty or not. I am beautifully made. Period. How are you going to dare yourself to be more confident? What have you been holding back? Alright, mini dance break queens and celebrate all that jiggle! 👯💃🕺👯♀️. . . . . . #fattravelblogger #fatphobia #bodypositivity #allbodiesaregoodbodies #curvycrew #travelwriter #confidencecheck #goexplore #livefearlessly #pride #streetartpuertorico #streetart #selfielove #realtalk #travelblogger #goplaces #passportready (at Viejo San Juan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBi6MH2AJp3/?igshid=owowib8gucwz

Anyone else their own worst critic? 🙋♀️ For a long time, “no” was the default answer I gave myself. No, you cannot splurge on that dress. No, you don’t deserve that cookie. No, traveling solo is lonely.🙅♀️ “Wait” echoed around me. But wait for what? Why did I always tell myself no when deep down I wanted to say yes? The simplest answer is: I was afraid of failing. Failure is this self-critical diva’s biggest nightmare. (Followed closely by being swarmed by birds. NO THANKS! 😂) I structured my life around perfection. I only took calculated risks that were effectively foolproof by the time I over-analyzed them in my head. The funny thing is, I didn’t strive for perfection for myself. I aimed to be flawless because it would please those around me. Failure meant that I was letting them down and it was selfish for me to put my own needs first. Or so I was brainwashed to believe. 🥴 After finally breaking it off with my people-pleasing tendencies, I went full-throttle on my daydream to travel the world. It started with dumping a guy who conditioned me to hate myself and belittled me. After losing that 180+ pounds of baggage, I saw all the glimmering possibilities. 🤩 I didn’t have to say yes to what others wanted. Instead, I offered them the answer I always gave myself -- no. I prioritized my own needs and happiness. I established boundaries. “No” was no longer an acceptable answer for my daydreams and neither was wait. Travel was my biggest daydream and it was time that I chased it. 🤸♀️ When I boarded the plane for my first solo flight, I assumed that failure would greet me at the gate. Something catastrophic would derail any chance I had at enjoying solo travel. I braced myself for the worst. Funnily enough, it never happened. Looking back, it’s stupefying how much animosity I tolerated. 🥺 Now, with each solo trip, layers of harbored contempt slowly slip away. This is why I cherish solo travel so much; it reminds me that investing in my happiness and daydreams is invaluable. 🥰 No amount of self-criticism or negativity is going to ground these travel plans any longer. . . . . . . #puertorico_world #puertoricogram #puertorico_greatshots (at Puerto Rico) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAtOLUNAujx/?igshid=1ww5jhkkm67ic
