The Time Dancer and The Shrine Maiden Chapter 8: Fathers and Daughters
Utsuki woke up to the sound of singing. She laid still as she realized who was singing.
The same mysterious twin children that were with her when Kureha died.
Her thoughts were interrupted as she heard thumping from Kurehaâs room. Then she heard the door slide open. Utsuki quickly got up from the bed and cracked open her screen door to see into the hall.
She saw her sister, Kureha stumbling. She also heard her sister groaning. But it wasnât a normal groan, it sounded different that made her stand on edge.
She opened the door and made her way to her sister.
âKureha.â Utsuki started as she grabbed her sister's hand.
It echoed through the hall the two sisters were in. Utsuki was on the ground. A red mark covered her left cheek. Utsuki turned towards her sister and her appearance scared her.
Her pale skin was even paler, she had a gray tint to her skin and her eyes had dark circles around them. Her mouth was opened as she just continuously groaned and she began stalking towards her.
âKureha!â Utsuki exclaimed as she began to scoot away from her sister as she continued stalking towards her.
Loud fast footsteps could be heard. A door opened and their father, Doman rushed in. Her father whipped out one of his spell cards. The card glowed briefly before the spell was cast by throwing it at her sister.
It was a spell that encases an enemy in silk. As expected a whirlwind exploded from the paper spell and silk formed, encasing her sister. Binding her limbs together to where she canât move. She fell over, but was alive since she could hear her unnatural groaning.
Her father walked over to where Kureha fell and scooped up his silk encased daughter.
âUtsuki, go back to your room.â Doman ordered as he left Utsuki alone in the hall.
Scotland 997, Wyvern Castle
âI thought this area wasnât safe anymore.â Brooklyn commented from the wagon as he saw the castle.
âThere hasnât been an attack since the vikings.â Mary commented solemnly.
âWhat about this Constantine guy? You guys said that he wanted Princess Katharine and this was her castle, could he have people watching?â Brooklyn questioned.
âAs of late Constantine has been focusing on scouting where Kenneth and Maol Calvin are at. Since those two have strong claims to the throne and other clan heads may want them to rule than Constantine.â Finella informed the time displaced gargoyle.
âHow strong are their claims?â Brooklyn inquired.
âMoal Clavin was the son of the late King Kenneth.â Mary informed Brooklyn.
âWaitâŠdidnât you say Kenneth had a strong claim to the throne?â Brooklyn asked, confused over Kenneth being dead but also having a claim to the throne?
âThe late King Kenneth was King Kenneth the Second. This Kenneth is a cousin of the King and is trying to become King Kenneth the Third.â Finella cut in as the horse and wagon stopped at the castle.
It was strange being back here. It didnât feel like home, it felt like a tomb. The empty castle that once was teeming with life both human and gargoyle. Now it just held the remains of his clan both shattered and intact.Â
Brooklyn made his way up to where he used to roost. He got to the landing and the sight that greeted him was Goliathâs stone back. He then went closer to the edge, and he saw Lexington, Hudson, Broadway and himself also stuck in stone.Â
Heâs honestly shocked that the castle is this quiet. He honestly expected Demona to be here. After all, she wanted the castle for herself. Why wasnât she here?
âThat statue looks like you.â Finella commented, pulling Brooklyn out of his thoughts.
âThat is me. Magus cursed us when he thought Princess Katharine died.â He corrected her.
âSo your time travel story is true?â Finella questioned.
âWhy would you follow me if you thought I was lying?â Brooklyn shot back.
âYouâre our best chance of survival.â Finella stated.
Brooklyn looked at Finella.
âArenât you a noble lady?â Brooklyn inquired.
âWhat does that have to do with anything?â Finella shot back.
âWell why are you on the run from Constantine? You know Latin when a majority of people in this time canât even read. You were clearly educated and the only people who can afford that are the nobles. You said that the Heads of Clans have other contenders for the throne? Does your family support Constantine?â Brooklyn pressed on trying to get to the bottom of this.
âMy family has remained neutral in this.â Finella shot back.
âThen why are you out here? Shouldnât you be holed up in a castle?â Brooklyn asked.
âAnd put my family on the line? If Constantine finds out where I am heâll lay siege to my familyâs home.â Finella countered back.
âAnd you being on the run really helping them?â Brooklyn questioned.
âI donât know, but if they find out where I am, trouble could happen.â Finella stated.
âFather, may I come in?â Utsuki asked outside the screen door.
âYes.â Was heard from behind the door.
Utsuki took in her fatherâs study. He was sitting on the floor while paperwork and measuring instruments strewn the table he sat at. However with her fatherâs usual instruments she saw metal spikes.
The same metal spikes that were inside the tree. The same tree that her father told her sealed a dangerous power. However there seemed to be more spikes present?
I found out that there is more than just one sacred tree, there is another, however there has been no silkworms in it for centuries. With just a handful of silkworms we could get the tree ready for Kureha.
That memory crossed her mind. There was another tree. But why would her father unseal both trees?
âAre those spikes from our tree?â Utsuki asked.
Doman looked shocked that Utsuki brought that up.Â
âThere seems to be more spikes than I thought. Did you have more commissioned?â Utsuki pressed further.
âNo. Remember when I had you prepare some silkworms, there were more iron spikes inside that tree as well.â
âWhy did you unseal it? You always told me and Kureha to never remove the spikes within the tree.â Utsuki surveyed.
Itâs necessary for Kurehaâs recovery.â Doman informed his youngest.
âKureha seemed to be at full strength since she smacked me to the ground.â Utsuki replied curtly.
âYes her strength seems to be back for now but there have been reports of that strength quickly fading.â Doman responded.
âDo the reports say anything about patients attacking their loved ones?â Utsuki questioned.
âYes. Those receiving treatment may attack due to confusion. Donât take it personally, Utsuki. Soon Kureha will be a new person.â Doman informed her.
âWhat about those twins?â Utsuki pressed.
âWhat about the twins?â Doman asked.
âI heard them singing last night.â Utsuki answered.
âDid Kureha move when they started singing?â Doman demanded.
âYes. How did you know?â Utsuki pressed.
Doman gritted his teeth and the brush pen in his hand looked like it was about ready to snap.
âRest assured Utsuki, once Kureha is recovered. The twins will be dealt with. Now run along, since Kureha is still recovering youâll need to do her duties as well.â Doman commanded.
Utsuki knew that tone well. It left no room for an argument.
âYes. Father.â She said as she bowed to him.
âUtsuki one more thing.â Doman began as he pulled out a box from under his desk. He rose with the strange mysterious wooden box in hand and gave it to Utsuki.
Utsuki took a hold of the box, she felt it for a bit before she lifted the top off. Inside the box was a large sheathed knife, it reminded her of a hori hori that she would use in gardening.
âI had this knife commissioned for you. If Kureha attacks you again just use this to get away from her.â Doman stated.
âI thought you were trying to help Kureha.â Utsuki murmured as she held the knife.
âI am working on that but we canât deny that sheâs dangerous right now. Iâm not saying to kill her, but just in case she attacks you again, defend yourself just long enough to run away from her. Understand?â Doman spoke to his youngest.
âSir, Cuncar of Angus has arrived.â The scarred youth called Gillcomegain announced.
âThanks my lad. Cuncar, how are you?â Constantine greeted.
âTell your squire to leave now.â Angus commanded.
Gillcomegain glared at the aging blonde noble man for daring to talk to the King that way.
âGillcomegain take your leave.â Constantine ordered.
âAre you questioning your king?â Constantine challenged.
âNo sir.â The scarred squire said through gritted teeth as he made his way out of the tent.
âHow did you find out?â Cuncar interrogated.
âFind out what?â Constantine asked smugly.
âYou know damn well.â Cuncar counter back.
âFinella told me. After all, I am the father.â Constantine answered.
âNow you're interested in him? I thought you were too busy trying to marry Princess Katharine?â Cuncar continued.
âA marriage to Katharine would strengthen my claim to the throne and would halter Maol Calvin.â Constantine informed Cuncar.
âAnd what of my grandson and daughter? I noticed you didnât include them in your plans.â He questioned through clenched teeth.
âI would have ensured my son became king. After all, his grandfather is a powerful man.â Constantine spoke.
âBut not powerful enough to think about marrying my daughter.â Cuncar countered.
A heavy pause set through the tent.
âDid you know why Katharine never married?â Constantine asked.
âAfterall she was the niece of the previous king, her father had his own holdings as well. So why wouldnât someone want to marry her?â Constantine continued.
âWhere are you going with this?â Cuncar spoke out with an unamused look on his face. Constantine had a brief look of irradiation on his face before he composed himself once again.
âKatherine canât bear children.â Constantine informed the man.
âThat is a strong allegation with no evidence to suggest otherwise.â Cuncar informed the King.
âThere were concerning rumors of Katharneâs servants that their lady never received her monthly.â Constantine suggested.
âSo what is your plan⊠marry Katharine and hope that Moal Calvin and you unite to defeat Kenneth? I noticed nothing said about Finella or Iagan.â Cuncar inquired about Constantine's plans.
âWhat respectable man wants a barren woman? Not the first time that a husband brought in his illegitimate heir and made him heir because his wife failed to have a child. Afterall she babied those Gargoyle Eggs Iâm sure sheâll open her heart to a child that didnât come from her.ââ Constantine mused.
âThat doesnât mean sheâll love my grandson. Also what happens if you do find Katharine and she does bear you a son, what would happen to my grandson?â Cuncar argued back.
âYou seem to care an awful lot about him.â Constantine spoke.
âSomeone has to since both his parents donât seem to.â Cuncar shouted in fury.
âIf we make ourselves allies, my son will have both parents in his life.â Constantine spoke to the enraged Cuncar.
âSo youâll marry my daughter or will you dump both her and Iagan when another chance of power comes your way?â Cuncar argued.
Constantine had to bite his tongue. He knew that he would be met with hostility with Cuncar when he mentioned Iagan, his son, was the best kept secret. He wonât deny having relations with Finella, however it was strange how Iagan came to be. Most women knew they were pregnant when they missed their bleeding cycles, but as far as Finella said she never missed hers, also when they tend to grow as the child grows within them, Finella never showed any physical changes. He honestly thought that she was bluffing when she went back to her familyâs castle for her motherâs funeral that she had given birth.
However it was a long shot he wrote to Cuncar mainly to see if Finella was telling the truth. Well he knows that it is.
âIs Iagan with you?â Constantine asked.
âWhy? So you can put a bounty on him like you did with his mother?â Cuncar argued back.
âCanât a father see his child?â
âYou tell me, can I see mine?â
âDepends will you help me?â Constantine asked.
âI wonât help you with this war, Iâll help you locate my daughter if you tell me why you put a bounty on her.â Cuncar offered.
âMagus was seen with Finella. He was in possession of a book that my own court mage is interested in.â
âSo you put a bounty on not only my daughter, but also a widowed mother and her eight year old son, over a book.â Cuncar spoke.
âFinella and that widowed mother were last seen with Magus. Also just yesterday I received a field report that your daughter used that book to summon a demon to escape from a crowd.â
âHow do you know she summoned a demon?â
Constantine then went to the table in the tent and pulled the field report and handed it to Cuncar.
âRead it for yourself. It says that once she threatened a crowd of people by summoning a demon and once she did a red skinned winged demon emerge from flames summoned right above her.â Constantine informed Cuncar.
âListen, if you help me locate your daughter and she hands over the book, sheâll go free.â Constantine offered Cuncar.
âWhat of Iagan? Or if you win this war what will happen to both Finella and Iagan?â Cuncar questioned.
âHow about we focus on finding Finella and we could all discuss the next steps moving forward at a later date.â Constantine spoke to Cuncar.
âSir!â Gillcomegain cut through the tent.
âWhat is it?â Constantine shouted at the boy.
âThe scouts have reports of Finella, Mary and the demon earlier being spotted heading towards Castle Wyvern.â Gillcomegain informed the men.
âIâll go.â Cuncar announced as he was making his way out of the tent.
âWhat?â Constantine asked as the middle aged man made his exit.
âYou said if you got your book back my daughter would go free. She doesnât trust you for good reasons. She may listen to me. But once you get your book back you leave my family and lands alone.â Cuncar stated as he exited the tent.
None of the men saw the hooded figure listening in.
Finella and Mary were at a courtyard with a fire going when Brooklyn came back from his exploration inside the castle.
âDid you see anyone?â Mary asked him.
âNo.â Brooklyn answered.
âWho would take refuge in this castle besides us?â Finella asked.
âDemona.â He answered solemnly.
âWhose Demona?â Mary asked Brooklyn.
âShe was Golaithâs second in command.â Brooklyn stated.
âOh she was the one with the blue skin and the red hair. But⊠I thought she was shattered like the rest of you and I thought your clan didnât believe in names.â Mary asked.
âWell she gets her name by Macbeth⊠have any of you heard of him?â Brooklyn asked the two.
âNo. So wait, do you not have a name?â Finella responded to Brooklynâs question.
âOh⊠when we wake up in the future, we decide on new names to signal our new lives.â Brooklyn answered.
âSo what is your name?â Mary asked.
âBrooklyn.â He answered.
âBut what about this Demona character?â Finella asked.
âShe planned the attack on Castle Wyvern with Hakon and the Captain of the guard.â Brooklyn grimly informed the two. Finella took the information in but Mary was shocked.
âButâŠHakon heâŠâ Mary began but didnât know how to finish the sentence.
âYeahâŠâ Brooklyn spoke, after all they both were there and they saw the aftermath.Â
His clan full of nameless fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters all shattered. He couldnât help but think about Coldstone, Coldfire and Coldsteel. How they and the rest of their clan never did a wind ceremony for them, how they never reached the afterlife, from what he could gather they were just here, stuck in limbo is the best way he could describe it. But thenâŠwhy was only Coldstone put together? He remembers the aftermath when there were several shattered remains of other gargoyles, but why did Demona and Xanathos ressurected just him.
âDid you spot her anywhere?â Finella asked, pulling Brooklyn from his thoughts.
âNo.â Brooklyn answered.
âHow dangerous is this Demona?â Finella inquired, irritation lingered in her voice since her question wasnât answered the first time.
âRemember earlier when I mentioned breaking a magical pact with the Fae that made someone immortal?â Brooklyn asked.
The women stared at him in disbelief.
âPlease tell me youâre jesting.â Mary pleaded with the time displaced gargoyle.
âHer deal with the Fae tied her to a human named Macbeth. Unless they kill each other theyâre immortal.â Brooklyn informed the two.
âDo you have any other information about this Macbeth?â Finella pressed.
âUhh he becomes King of Scotland.â Brooklyn answered the two humans before him.
The two even looked more confused. The two of them have been in this civil war for two years now and this is the first time these two have heard of this Macbeth character.
However this isnât the first contender for the throne trying to ally with the gargoyles. Kenneth had been looking for some gargoyles to ally with him. However he hasnât had much luck finding them since Constantine has been hunting them down. But MacbethâŠthey have never heard of this man before and apparently he is immortal along with Demona by making a deal with fairies.
âDo you guys hear that?â Brooklyn asked as he heard a horse and wagon. He broke from the group, scaled a wall and sure enough he saw what he heard.
âWhat is it? Is it Demona?â Mary shouted from the ground.
âNo!â Brooklyn hollered back down to the ladies.
By this rate both of them had made their way up the stairs to join Brooklyn on the wallâs edge.
âOh no.â Finella spoke in a grave tone.
âIs that Constantine?â Brooklyn asked.
âNo itâs my father.â Finella answered.
Kureha felt sore when she woke up. Everything just throbbed, her head heard and her muscles ached.
A knocking was heard at the door.
âKureha.â Her fatherâs voice broke through.
âMay I come in? I have something that I need to discuss with you.â He spoke through the wood.
âYes.â Kureha answered as she tried to get out of bed. She couldnât. She didnât have the strength. Meanwhile while she was struggling to rise from her bed, her father had opened the door and dragged in a wicker chest.
âWhat?â Kureha questioned as she saw her father drag a chest that could fit a human being in.
âYou know that you were in an accident.â Doman began as he dragged the wickered chest in the room.
âYes.â Kureha answered but with no confidence. She has been told that she was in an accident but the details are fuzzy.
She remembers the day Utsuki was upset that she couldnât find the Sengeroku pieces for the new game their father bought them. Father wanted to focus on his work so ordered them out of the shrine. She remembers being near the tree but anything after that is just blank. She gets flashes of Utsuki screaming but other than that. Nothing.
âIâve already let Utsuki know what is going to happen.â
âWhat is happening?â Kureha asked.
âYour accidentâŠyou were gravely injured.â Doman began carefully picking out his words.
âBut with these wicker chests, youâll be a new person.â Doman continued.
âHow do these chests help?â Kureha inquired as she eyed it.
âYou know that Iâve had you and Utsuki take care of the mulberry tree and the silkworms that inhabit it?â
âThese silkworms can go through a special ritual that can bring back those who were gravely injured.â
âFather did I die?â Kureha asked.
Wyvern Castle, Scotland 997
âWhat have you been up to?â The man that had been identified as Lady Finellaâs father.
The father glared at his daughter as he took in the strange company.
âFather-â Lady Finella began but was interrupted by her father.
âYou have a bounty on your head, and rumors that you're using a magic book and consorting with demons!â Her father continued to yell as he gestured towards Brooklyn.
âIâm a gargoyle!â Brooklyn shouted from the sidelines.
Everyone paused to glare at Brooklyn.
âHow would you like it if I went around calling you all demons when you know gargoyles exist?â Brooklyn argued.
âSo your kind just appears out of flames!â Cuncar shot back.
âFather, how did you find us?â Finella pressed, trying to keep this conversation on track and not waste time arguing.
âConstantineâs scout saw you. He wanted to come here, so I insisted it was me instead.â Cuncar informed the group.
âWhy are you with Constantine?â Brooklyn questioned.
âI was summoned by him. He also wanted to see Iagan.â Cuncar informed the group.
âWhat!â Finella exclaimed in shock.
âWhose Iagan?â Brooklyn whispered to Mary who just shrugged her shoulders in confusion.
âBaba!â A small voice exclaimed from the covered wagon. A small boy with dirty blonde hair, who looked to be no older than two peered over an opening in the cover wagon.
âWhy would you bring him with you?!â Finella exclaimed as she made her way to the child.
Unfortunately the child then made himself smaller and pulled away from Finella.
âKing Constantine ordered me to bring him. You donât deny the kingâs orders without serious consequences.â Cuncar gravely informed his daughter.
âWhy does he want him now!? Heâs been around for two years.â Finella screamed to no one in particular.
âHis plan is to use the book to find out where Katharine is and marry her.â Cuncar told his daughter.
âBut why bring Iagan into this⊠heâs a baby, my baby.â Finella murmured.
Mary and Brooklyn looked at each other both shocked at the revelation.
âBecause Constantine believes that Katharine canât have any children, he thinks that he can get Katharine to raise Iagan.â Cuncar informed Finella.
âThat bastard.â Finella cursed.
âWatch your tongue. Iagan is at that age where he mirrors adults.â Cuncar warned her.
âDonât tell me you agreed to his plan.â Finella muttered.
âNo, but Finella, if you give him the book, he said that he would pardon you.â Cuncar informed the group.
âDo you believe him?â Finella asked her father.
âI trust that bastard as far as I can throw him. I know that the moment that I turn my back, he will put a sword in it. However, he has dangerous information.â Cuncar informed the group.
âIf he gets a hold of the Grimorum, heâll be even more dangerous.â Brooklyn cut in.
âWhat are you suggesting then, beast?â Cuncar injected.
Brooklyn growled at the beast comment.
âMy lord, the gargoyle knows first hand the danger that book possesses." Mary spoke.
âWhat danger?â Cuncar inquired towards Mary.
âBack when Prince Malcom ruled over Castle Wyvern the Archmage was almost successful in taking over the castle.â Mary informed Cuncar.
âYou worked in the castle at the time?â Cuncar questioned Mary.
âNo sir. But during the Archmageâs magical uprising my village was attacked. This gargoyle, Brooklyn as he goes by, his clan was heavily involved in stopping him.â Mary explained.
âI heard that another mage stopped the Archmage.â Cuncar stated.
âAHK-â Brooklyn screamed out as a fire struck him square in the chest as he fell to the ground clutching the flaming arrow.Â
Everyone quickly turned to see Valor with a bow made of fire.
âThe Grimorum now!â Valor hollered as he got ready to fire another.
