Title: The Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Why Smokers/Vapers are Particularly at RiskI hope this finds you all healthy and safe during these challenging and chaotic times.Â
We’re all doing our best to get by and deal with the circumstances until we can make it out on the other side. I am in New York City with my wife and we are doing everything we can to stay healthy, keep motivated and stay positive. The coronavirus (aka, COVID-19) pandemic is unprecedented and none of us feel prepared. Â
It has uprooted our lives and forced us to stop living as usual.  Many people feel angry, scared, uncertain and vulnerable. One of the best things we can do right now is to take care of ourselves mentally, physically and emotionally. And the healthier we remain, the better we’re able to show up for our families, friends and communities.Â
I’m confident we will make it through this pandemic, and we’ll become even more resilient as individuals and a society because of it.  As my part in contributing to your well-being, I put together a resource to explain the following:
Why are smokers and vapers are especially at risk?
What is Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)?Â
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China. The coronavirus uses the receptor ACE2 to infect cells. And a preprint study found that the gene that encodes the receptor ACE2 is more active in smokers than nonsmokers. “This indicates that smokers may be more susceptible to 2019-nCov” and are part of the vulnerable population.Â
A study published in the Chinese Medical Journal involved 78 patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. And they found smokers were 14 times more likely to have progressed symptoms than nonsmokers, including death.
Another research analyzing 8000 deaths from China showed men are more likely to die than women. This could be related to the fact that more men smoke in China. More than 50% of Chinese men smoke compared to only 2.7% of Chinese women. What are the Symptoms of COVID-19?Some people who are infected with COVID-19 do not show signs of symptoms, however those that do report low-grad fever, body aches, coughing, sore throat, and congestion.Â
The Virus can also cause more severe symptoms, like high fever, severe cough and shortness of breath. Why Smokers and Vapers are at risk?Since smoking and vaping harms the immune system, it makes the body less likely to fight off disease. And since smoking tobacco can increase inflammatio and harm the lungs, smokers are often sick more often than non-smokers. That’s why
Professor Robert Dingwall a public health expert at Nottingham Trent University, said that coronavirus is more dangerous for smokers. And
Professor Sanjaya Senanayak, from the Australian National University (ANU), said while no direct link had been established, smoking increased other conditions that do make Covid-19 worse. One reason is that smoking can cause lung disease like COPD and emphysema.
These lung conditions can make it more likely to get pneumonia, which is one of the severe symptoms of COVID-19. And even though vaping is considered by some to be healthier than cigarettes, it also creates inflammation of the lungs and can make you more vulnerable to getting sick.According to pulmonologist and smoking cessation specialist
Humberto Choi, MD, cigarette smoking and vaping can also compromise the respiratory system. This means that people who smoke or vape are more susceptible to lung infections. According to Dr. Choi, recent studies have shown that aldehydes and other components found in vaping liquids can impair the immune function of cells found in the airway and lungs. It's super clear that smoking and vaping harms the lungs and makes smokers more susceptible to this deadly infection. COVID-19 Hypnosis Support The COVID-19 epidemic has changed everything about how we live.Â
We are dealing with a new reality and having to navigate new routines, isolating ourselves from others, keeping healthy, managing stress and, for many, educating and/or caring for our children while still trying to work. To help cope with these intense and uncertain times, I have provided a few free links below to help you relieve stress and anxiety and keep you at your best.Â
3 Steps to Relieve Stress and Anxiety:
While it may seem like a cigarette or a Juul might help you relieve stress, the reality is it will actually make everything worse.  Smoking is simply a habitual routine and instead of giving you more control, it’s stressing out your heart, lungs, body and mind even more by releasing poison into your system.  Instead of helping you relax, you’re causing more physical and emotional stress to yourself at a time when you really need to focus on ways to stay well.Â
The truth is the one thing you CAN control right now is quitting smoking, which will not only keep you healthy and robust (for now and into the future), but it will also give you the peace of mind you are actually craving. Just imagine breathing easier, having more energy, being able to stay focused and having more money, rather than worrying about your next craving, stocking up on cigarettes, feeling guilty and scared for your health.Â
There’s no good reason to postpone it any longer because you CAN become a non-smoker and quitting CAN be easy.  My Quit Smoking in One Session Protocol (QS1 Protocol), addresses the problem of smoking in the mind where habits and cravings are stored.  The QS1 Protocol includes a lifetime service guarantee and has an 80% success rate with no drugs or withdrawals. During this global pandemic, I am offering 50% off my Quit Smoking Program:
