Most people would flinch at drinking coffee in the evening, but for Joel it was just like drinking tea. Didn't exactly put him to sleep, but didn't wake him up either. When he heard Jane's voice his lip twitched up into a small smile as he took a sip. As the mug his his lips the smile disappeared. It still echoed in his eyes ever so slightly. He finished his small sip before he licked his lips and returned to normal before facing her. "Thank you, Jane," he told her, though his voice was just a little too dull. "Stew sounds nice."
His accent danced around the word stew for a moment even if the sentence was finished. It was the best he could do. Being nice that is. He scoffed and rolled his eyes as he settled back into the couch again. "Maria don't care 'bout me," he grumbled and took another sip, "But I 'ppreciate you thinkin' that."
At the mention of her door he furrowed his brows. "So you came over to make me stew and coffee just to con me into fixin' your door?" He asked her as his brows raised. "Fine, but I ain't lookin' at it tonight. Tomorrow mornin'. Let me finish this coffee then you can bring me some of that stew." He put an arm on the back of the couch as he tried to get back to the matter at hand: enjoying a nice mug of coffee after a long, relaxing day at work. And maybe, just pretend for a moment that everything was normal.
🎤🎶 —— "Ah!" she let out in an exaggerated gasp, hand over her heart. "Such heartfelt thanks, I can feel the gratitude wash over me." But she smiled, despite the sarcasm. "You're welcome," she said all too sweetly. Finishing her cup, she let out a soft laugh at his assessment of Maria caring about him. "That's what you think, maybe. Otherwise, I wouldn't be here, messing with your kitchen." Not that it took much convincing. Why she was settled at the Tipsy Bison, serving but also helping out with food. It was in her nature, it seemed, as much as music was. Not that there was much use for that, nowadays.
Deciding then to sit at the chair beside the sofa, she placed the empty mug on the table, making a mental note to wash it before she left. Manners, and all. She rolled her eyes at, quite frankly, unjust accusation. "Okay, con is such a...strong, inaccurate word. Think of it as being....neighborly. Or, if we have to steer away from that... Call it me totally buttering you up for a favor. Not like if you say no I'm going to grab the stew and hightail it back to my....drafty house." A soft laugh escaping her at the mere thought.
Not that she needed to, if that were the case, as he agreed. Her face brightened with a smile, "Thank you," soon pointing to her face. "See, that's how you would normally thank someone. Just so you know." But her smile remained, leaving him to it. "Maria sent me with a half a loaf of bread, by the way. She cares. I'll slice some of it for the stew."

Joel had been doing a great job minding his business today. He kept his head down, did his job, and moved on. Nothing crazy and nothing spectacular, just like he liked it. Even if he missed the taste of action, the older he got the more he appreciated a quiet evening.
So, when work was done he settled back into his small home and sunk into the couch. It was when he put his feet up on the coffee table - shoes still on - that he noticed there was a mug on the wooden surface. His brows furrowed for a minute. He pulled his feet off the table and leaned forward to see it was still steaming. Coffee. He knew who placed it there. He hooked his fingers around the handle and called out into the house, "Just 'cause you got me coffee, don't mean I owe you nothing."
He brought the mug to his lips for a sip and man, he will always savor every sip of coffee. He'd grow his own beans if he weren't in the middle of Satan's freezer.
📻🎶 —— A twitch of her lips came at the sound of his voice. Residing in his kitchen at the moment, a simmering pot of her best stew yet. Grandmother's recipe, Jolene Bardot's book residing at the counter, all that she really had left of her family. Worn and leather bound. Been through some things, and, well, so had everyone in Jackson. Placing her hand on it, as if needing to feel it's touch, she took a deep breath.
"Well that's not neighborly, is it? No thank you? No, good God, Jane, this is just what I needed?" she called out, a crack of a smile on her lips as she moved toward the living room, her own cup of coffee at hand, because she felt deserving of it.
Poking her head out first, she smiled, "Hi. I have stew ready to go when you want it. You don't have to eat it, but, I can at least tell Maria I made it all nice for you so, y'know, you don't starve like she secretly worries you will." Steps were made toward the living room, though she chose to still stand, sipping the coffee gently. "Do you owe me anything for the stew? Maybe...." She winced, "...checking my back door when you can? It won't close all the way. Like...the wood's warped or something. Keeping the heat out." She paused. "It's really good stew."
Ah, yes. Father's Day. Jane is not a fan. Her dad abandoning her mother as soon as she told him she was pregnant. Not a fan. Most likely to sing a very aggressive version of Papa Don't Preach, though! And have more respect for dads that stick around.

🎤🎶 —— ". . . I have, actually. Kinda hard not to catch that." The words admitted as she looked to him, her lips pursed in concern, not pity, but concern. "...why I'm asking." Grabbing two glasses, as she wasn't about to let him drink alone, pouring for them both. "Beattie Johnson, she... She did not hold back. And they say American journalism, paparazzi, that they're bad but I hadn't seen anything like that..." She handed him the glass, "But, glad you seem okay, for the most part. Unless you're doing that, macho man thing where you say everything's okay and it's....far from it. I'm hoping not, that's...lame as all hell." Giving a shrug, "Just saying."
Steve couldn't help the short laugh that escaped at her comment, God did he wish his issues ran as deep as striking out. He'd give anything to go back to those days, as much as he'd sit there and bitch to Tommy and Carol when a girl'd reject him, he'd so much rather be bummed out over some girl turning him down than from fighting off nightmares of the literal Russian torture he'd suffered just months prior. Though he could definitely do without the Tommy and Carol part ... Another laugh and roll of his eyes at Jane now, though he did take a second to think of what exactly he wanted and eventually offered a shrug. "Just give me a rum and Coke for now? But alright, don't worry - in the very magical, unlikely chance, we get busted I'll say I hopped the counter and made it myself." Smirk played at his lips, faltering slightly at her offer as he thought that over now ... He couldn't tell her the truth, that much was for sure and he really didn't want to bother her with his troubles ... but he did show up here, so. "Hope you know I'd only walk into a church if you were the one leading the sermon ... But uh, I dunno - just haven't been sleeping well I guess. Nightmares from the ... mall fire. Y'know?" A half truth couldn't hurt anyone, right?
🎤🎶 —— "As long as we're both on the same page in the name of underage drinking," the words given with a smile as she filled a glass with ice. Coca Cola and rum poured over it, and for a bit of whimsy, a maraschino cherry placed on top. Placing it on the bar top and sliding it over with a flourish. "Voila." Leaning forward on the counter, she admired the absurdity of the moment. Sneaking in underage drinking at a bar, with someone that was once a fellow classmate though not quite...a friend. Not an enemy, more he definitely exists, and so did she. But after graduation, where social circles blurred and proximity in the work place helped in that. At least a little bit. The common ground? Starcourt Mall. A soft laugh escaped her, grabbing a rag. "I mean, I would look pretty cool in like, a total priest outfit with the collar and all that. I would so lead a flock, bending to my words, rising up that spirit..." Sort of like a stage, when she thought about it. She was gonna file that for later. Her smile turned sympathetic, though, nodding softly. "But I know what you mean." Thinking of the fire, of the lives lost. Like Hopper. A wave of guilt washed over her with that. The anger she held for him. Over Benny. Her brows furrowed, "Were you there? Did you...see it happen?"

🎤🎶 —— The sound of the bell jingled as she opened the door, backpack heavy on her as she went through the aisles of records and tapes. Looking around, there was barely anyone here. Her brows furrowed, what looked to be a pretty slow and dead day. There was a sense of dread on her face at that. A full eight hours? With nothing to do? Waiting for customers that would come few and far in between?
She smiled.
Making her way toward the counter, walking behind and placing her bag down, she ceremoniously got on top of the counter, looking to her co-worker, colleague, friend with a conspiratorial smile. "Are we feeling Pat Benatar? Or Madonna. I'll be okay with Madonna. Or... Go-Go's? Blondie? Also, we're so ordering pizza. My treat, this time. If we're going to be stuck here for a full shift until closing... We're gonna enjoy it, right? Only fair."
Mars did a frog blink, where one eye blinks before the other, as he mentally wrestled with the surging desire to say no out of pure spite. Because the odds were that he would tell her yes. Then she was going to be smug about it for however long during their trip to one of the big cities for her gig. Did he want to put himself through that? Was the slight annoyance a bigger deal than letting her go there alone? No, it wasn't. “Maybe not a big break, but you've gotta start somewhere, right? I'd say your first real gig is a sign you're going places.” And, well. “One I'll be there for.”
🎤🎶 —— One I'll be there for. The smile was immediate. And it was wide, conquering her face. Was it pretty much a guarantee? Yes. Jane was not humble enough to think Mars would have said no with her best puppy eyes. Even more if she did a pout. But, the fact that she didn't have to quite resort to that? Made it even better. "That's a fucking yes!" she let out with glee. A laugh erupting from her lips, she wasted no time in throwing her arms around his neck and hugged tight. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!" Pulling back, she raised a hand, "You will not regret this. This? Will be the most epic of road trips in recent history, I swear," she ended, crossing her heart. "It is next week, so, time to pack, time to secure a route. Um... We'll split costs for gas, food, especially snacks. Make the perfect mix tapes, of course. She let out a laugh, absolutely thrilled and filled with a sense of, "This...is actually happening. I mean, I was going to go anyway, but... I don't know. Going somewhere with someone, and, I'm so happy it's you, it..." she let out a sigh. "Makes it even more real, somehow. Thank you."

🎤🎵 —— Looking at Nancy, her immediate response was to shake her head. Because of course not. "I know the impulse is strong, y'know. To keep it all in, not let anyone see what's going on, how you're feeling." She nodded, "I get that. But... It's just a mask, isn't it? Something to hold up and have others perceive and keeping everything bottled up. It's sort of a way to protect yourself, too. And others."
Placing a gentle hand on her shoulder, she shrugged, "But I don't need protecting, and I want you to be able to...Not feel like you have to protect yourself. Besides. Letting whatever's bottled up inside you doesn't make you less strong. You're still strong with whatever you do. Shit, Nancy, you're the strongest person I know. But I'm here if you want to talk, if you want to ease some of the pressure." A quirk of her lips, "Working at a bar, kind of an occupational hazard to have people unload and sometimes cry while I'm pouring them a drink, so... I'm well practiced."
A small attempt at humor, something to make Nancy at ease, not sure if it was working, but an attempt nonetheless. "I'm just saying. I'm here."
Samuel could only smile at her as he wrapped his arms around her and held her against him. He always loved seeing her happy and smiling and the male wanted to cherish her constantly. He wanted to be the person she could always rely on and always be with. It wasn't easy all the time but that he always tried his best with her. "You deserve the world, my love. And I shall do whatever it takes to give you that. Being disgustingly cute in public with you is the least I could do. And if anyone has a problem with that they shall face my wrath." He said in a deadly serious voice. He didn't play around when it came to her and he found himself willing to fight on the entire world for her. He also knew that nothing could change his mind about that.
🎤🎶 —— She let out a soft chuckle, his words filling her heart the way rarely anyone ever had. It's why she wanted it to work this time, to really work. Her hold on him tightened just a bit, her grin wide, "Your wrath, huh?" Hands reaching toward the back of his head, fingers in his hair. "And with the serious voice, too. They better watch it, then." Chuckling as she pressed a kiss to his lips, smiling still, pressing close and breathing him in. Her heart beating in her chest just a bit quicker, kissing him again... And again... Smiling until it broke. "Come on. I'm hungry and I don't want to be late. Especially if you're planning to spoil me rotten." Lowering her arms from him, down his arms, her eyes looking up at his. "I'm actually...excited for tonight. Oddly. Which is funny, not like it's a first date or anything, but..." She laughed. "Still. I'm excited."

The last word was said in a whisper, voice dropping down several octaves as if she was afraid someone would hear, despite the fact that they were completely alone - not a single person around them. He's literally the lo -" She didn't know why she suddenly choked on her next words, but she tried again, swallowing heavily. "Love of my life."
🎤🎶 —— She really didn't mean to laugh, but she did. Catching herself a minute or so late, clearing her throat to quiet it down. "Sorry. Sorry, that..." She let out a sigh. "That's not funny. Totally not funny. Well, you whispering gay in a room with just us is kinda funny? But..." Pressing her lips together, she sat up on the bed, relinquishing her position laying on her stomach. "You're right. Could totally be wrong, maybe read things wrong, too. I just..." She looked at Jackie for a moment, looking at her face, biting her bottom lip in thought. "....maybe it was wishful thinking, huh?" Her smile widened, "Probably that." Taking a deep breath, she let out a hum, "...though... Calling Jeff the love of your life... Didn't come out as smooth as you intended, did it?" She shrugged, "Not that I'm saying anything about Jeff. I like Jeff. But um.... You don't bring him around when you come to hear me sing. Or anyone else. Maybe Shauna sometimes, but... You always stay until...way after I'm done and... I don't know. But. Hey. Just wishful thinking."
