im in like chapter 7 or 8 of nona the ninth and so far my takeaway is that id gladly pick up smoking and cirrhosis to hang out with pyrrha
nona is just so happy to be there and the first few chapters of ntn is just the narration saying big bold red letters: THIS SIX MONTH OLD WILL DIE IN THIRTY SECONDS
kind of unfortunate to go into harrow the ninth being like “oh wow ianthe is so hot and amoral and off-putting” and every subsequent chapter shows that her brand of amorality is unfortunately being a pathetic, opportunistic remora
camilla with LAMBENT eyes, you say
wowzers 😳😳😳
lowkey kinda get why cytherea went crazy like aside from her illness imagine feeling unlimited and eternal guilt over killing her beloved cavalier and your colleagues are like “whats a loveday lol”
all the flashbacks in harrow the ninth so far end like “look at this motherfucker (harrow) misremembering the events of gideon the ninth”
its really sad to see people play at radical politics by hollowing it out of its contents and wearing its radical skin. a lot of “radical” politics with major roots in the amelioration of specific minority identities (gender, race, etc.) nowadays are just reduced to idpol that, despite its rhetoric being aggressive towards oppressor classes, focuses most its energy on the less fortunate. in the end these “radical” politics are merely uncouth versions of the “politics as usual”, using the Machinery of existing hierarchies to beat down on the less fortunate dressed as oppressors. just a cynical analysis of and negotiation with hierarchy, that surely I, a subhuman, must have a group of even baser subhumans beneath me
thinking about the new wuthering heights movie again and i really hate what they did to heathcliff. the movie portrays heathcliff as a mostly animalistic, imprecise brute (especially with his illiteracy!) and book heathcliff is anything but! heathcliff is intelligent and is very much a man of his time (an industrialist) and improves upon the misery of wuthering heights by replacing the drunken, laborious hate machine that is hindley with multiple other tenants who are not as hateful as hindley individually, but in some harmonious fashion generate efficient levels of misery and hatred towards each other requiring little effort from heathcliff himself
just finished tom’s crossing
im really a fan of the idea of a kalin landry tom throuple. lets not think about what that means for landry and tom though
hatch porch, law enforcement and esprit de corps
egan is so fucking disgusting
kalin being compared to eurydice while tom and landry are given the title of orpheus leads me to think that in a better world the two gatestone children wouldve been passing kalin around like a blunt
one thing i appreciate about danielewsky’s tendency to add these outsider perspectives about The Story Proper™️ is that every once in a while he hits on something that makes you stop and think. not necessarily a realization, but its just nice to see things you’ve read in cold theory be applied to a narrative
IT’S FARGO
reading Tom’s Crossing and getting a very Love Lies Bleeding vibe from it. i’m even casting Ed Harris’ character in Love Lies Bleeding to play Old Porch
tom’s crossing is such a heavy book and it smells so nice 😭
