if hollows are human souls that couldn't move on and corrupted/decayed/rotted into something demonic/animalistic, then like.... what leads a soul to become not some predator capable of consuming other human souls but just. a lil lizard no bigger than some irl species of lizard? is that like. a baby that couldnt move on? a soul with very weak constitution that couldnt move on?

i REALLY like the idea of hueco mundo as not just some weird holding realm for decayed souls to prowl with nothing but each other, but as a truer desert ecosystem, which looks empty at a first glance but actually is teaming with life that is simply overlooked or dismissed by shinigami society as not being actually worth examining.

I know we are never going to get it, but I want a Hueco Mundo nature documentary so bad. There has to be an ecosystem in place, regardless of how "dead" it looks. The ecosystem that we can see is dominated by predators but the moss, lizards, and the trees means there is some sort of functioning lifecycle. Even if the energy in the ecosystem is specifically brought in by the souls that become Hollows, the fact that these things can thrive suggests either an alternative source of energy or some way to feed off the energy lost between trophic levels.

The trees specifically are fascinating to me. They don't seem to fulfill the role of primary producer like our trees, but that hasn't been explicitly ruled out. However, they seemingly have a different role, like whatever was going on with Ulquiorra's symbiotic relationship with them.

Man I would killlllll for a Hueco Mundo nature documentary!!!! Or an ecology book in the style of like... earlier ecologists who just kinda camped out with their species/biome and took note of everything. (At the very least, I plan to write my own "Hueco Mundo Monographs" and very much welcome other people in on this thought process!!)

There's clearly something going on beneath the surface level examination to allow lizards and trees and moss to thrive, and having finally visited the desert myself I have Several Ideas about how an environment seemingly barren to the untrained and unobservant eye can be a rich and nuanced ecosystem when viewed properly. How do they all interlink and what are we missing in-between and along side those subtle signs of life??

I don't think I ever got as far as Ulquiorra and his tree relation, whaaaaat??? Definitely gonna have to look into that! There must be a meaning there that we can tease out!

He ducks the towel thrown his way, disgusted

“For all the brawling you say you do in your spare time your aftercare sucks.” Ichigo comments, brings the ice up to his sore mouth and licks at the meltwater condensating in the heat of his palm, thirsty and tired and uncaring now that theyve had their fill.

“Hah?” Grimmjow turns around, hes black and blue. Just how Ichigo likes it

Shut up.

He tells himself, sucking on his own teeth and feeling the sting of the cuts along his palate and the blood clotting at his gums

“I dont usually have to do any,” grimmjow crinkles his nose, somehow adorable with the blood caked at his upper lip and the swell of the bridge where Ichigo got him good with his elbow “No ones ever awake for me to hafta.”

“You could just say you dont give a fuck.”

“Yea.” Grimmjow agrees, finds what he’s been looking for, a bottle of 80 proof something that Ichigo doesnt care about and hunkers back down from the bar, heavy soles thudding onto sticky tile and he swaggers, asshole, struts back over to his prone body on the stripper sofas and drops two solo cups to tip the booze into, he doesnt measure

Ichigo eyes the red cups, “what, no glass for a guest?”

“And risk you taking out another piece of me with it? Maybe next time.” Grimmjow leers, hes got a laceration across his collarbone, courtesy of Ichigo and the broken beer bottle he brought when Grimmjow pulled a knife on him

“You.” uh. Ichigo swallows on icy blood “you want me to check that out for you?”

Grimmjow cocks his head, his tongue halfway out to his solo cup, barely about to lap up a mouthful of pure fire and has the audacity to laugh

“Shut the hell up my old mans a doctor and i know some shit.” Ichigo snaps, his head throbs, fuuuuuck

“Yea i bet you know some shit.” Grimmjow snorts, his teeth glint under the gleam of the strobe now turned blue, he looks ultraviolet, ultraviolent

Grimmjow got bored so he's sitting on Ichigo's dresser half watching him and half watching over him, not quite comfortable enough to fully mirror him but enjoying the Shared Company. He senses another hollow nearby and flares his reiatsu in warning, before reining it back in to avoid waking Ichigo.

Ichigo wakes up in the middle of the night for some reason he can't quite place, and he's still so sleepy and comfy cozy so he just stays there, half awake and daydreaming. He's sleeping on his side facing the wall and doesn't even bother rolling over hes so comfy. For some reason he's thinking about Grimmjow, and he's got the worst morning wood about it, but he's still too sleepy to do anything about it other than press his thighs together and half grind against himself.

Grimmjow noticing the little movements Ichigo is making in his sleep have gotten less random, and he smells oh so sweet now. He's never been one to not take what he wants when he wants it. He enjoys fighting Ichigo though, and doesn't want things to end. Maybe he even cares a little about Ichigo's opinion of him.

But Ichigo whimpers Grimmjow's name, and it's over.

Grimmjow suddenly appearing behind Ichigo, phasing through blankets to get at his prey. One hand shoving Ichigo's shoulder so he's flat on his stomach and another grabbing his hip to pull him up into a position Grimmjow favors.

Ichigo never sees him coming, but he knows exactly who it is manhandling him, and the little yelp of surprise is chased by a moan almost as delicious as he smells.

The Hogyoku made Grimmjow's arrancar form wrong, he's not supposed to be like this. Beyond the adjustments to being an entirely new species in an entirely new social setting, he encounters gender dysphoria and takes it quite literally into his own hands, earning the respect of Pantera and forming a new bond with her. He can't go back to being a panther adjuchas, but he can make some alterations to this form he's in now. This takes place well before anything we see of the arrancar in canon, shortly after he was made.

AND on the topic of the sands above and forest below; im imagining something similar to redwood forests, with the forest floor we're familiar with below and then a whole other ecosystem up in the crowns of the trees that we didnt know existed until relatively recently. perhaps some variant of that exists in hueco mundo? a taiga sort of ancient forest shrouded in darkness and then a mass of branches so dense that the sands above build up into a tree top desert, each with their own distinct and different but overlapping and thriving ecosystems, if more sparse and subtle than what shinigami society is accustomed to.

the presence of trees in hueco mundo at all gives me questions too tbh; iirc they're made of reishi, but like… why are they trees. was the hueco mundo climate different at one point? was it once a lush forest, lost to time and left to petrify and only a ghost of what it once was? that would also be rather fitting and leaves much to explore. what would drive climate change in hueco mundo? from what we see, it's like.. los noches and the desert and the forest below and nothing else, unless im forgetting something? but how far does that go?? that being ALL the entire realm is seems… far fetched to me.

another fun idea is there having been a massive wildfire that laid absolute waste to the region we see and spread unfettered due to the seeming lack of major topography or waterways, destroying potentially tens of thousands of miles of forest. the remains we see now being just the life beginning to slowly take hold again, creeping in from the edges. the sands above being so empty because the forest floor below that usually serves as a refuge, food sources, etc for life having been decimated; while somewhere far off, away from the destruction of this cataclysmic wildfire, the sands above are less deserted and more vibrant, with maybe something akin to the american southwest or oak savanna or chaparral biomes?
