I’d rebuke the previous anon slightly. The Tom hate was actually much stronger last year when Cherry press was going on. I think this was bc it was clear they were doing an awards campaign and people didn’t like that. I think the hate does become worrisome when it translates into real life. I and other fans have noticed that many critics (albeit not the top ones) are very plugged into film twitter. They know how people on twitter feel about Tom and this can translate into reviews/reactions.
Again I need to ask? Isn’t worry a bit too much? No matter what, Tom at age 26 has got millions for his work, and will likely continue to collect millions as well as the adoration of fans all over the world. Why worry about him? I personally just can’t empathize. Because unlike him, I don’t have the option to just quit and enjoy my life until I’m old, nor I have the option to sit things out and wait for the opportunity I want. I like him, I like following along and seeing him succeed (same goes about Z), but worry is something I refuse to do about them.
But to assuage your fears and because I can’t fall asleep early (I really have the worst sleeping habits), I crunched some data 😈. So below is a list of actors (I exclude Z because she has significantly less film credits so the comparison wouldn’t be fair) and their average rotten tomatoes score over their movies, taking the tomatometer for every movie they have on their page (since you worry about critics):
That would tell us that Saoirse is the least liked by critics, but we know she has the most acclaim of all. Moral of the story? Every actors has flops. It’s just impossible to avoid them. And no one is judged on them, if they are delivering good work, which all of them do (I specifically chose those actors because they are in the same age bracket and I can’t recall any of them being singled out as a reason a movie was bad - in fact, even when their movies are bad, they are usually a high point, and that includes Tom).
Twitter is not real life. And film criticism is much more than film bros on twitter who hate on Tom because they are elitist and they don’t like that he appreciates marvel 🤷♀️
