smithsonianzoo 🐣Our kiwi chick at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute is 2 weeks old! She is eating a mixture of meat, fruit and vegetables. Kiwi chick look like adults when they hatch, but are not fully grown until they are about 18 months old.

Isn't she lovely? This is a little example of how adorable a kiwi is. Should protect them all. You are doing an amazing job, Smithsonian!!

Kiwi

Kiwi or kiwis are flightless birds native to New Zealand. At around the size of a domestic chicken, kiwi are by far the smallest living ratites (which also consist of ostriches, emus, rheas, and cassowaries), and lay the largest egg in relation to their body size of any species of bird in the world. The kiwi is a national symbol of New Zealand, and the association is so strong that the term Kiwi is used internationally as the colloquial demonym for New Zealanders. There are five recognized species, two of which are currently endangered, another two of which are vulnerable, and one of which is near-threatened. All species have been negatively affected by historic deforestation but currently the remaining large areas of their forest habitat are well protected in reserves and national parks. At present, the greatest threat to their survival is predation by invasive mammalian predators.

Para todos aquellos interesados en la historia y origen de nuestra querida mascota, os dejo un escrito muy interesante. Está en inglés, pero así practicais!!

El primer dato sobre los kiwis que os traemos tiene que ver con las lenguas, y es que ahora a muchos nos ha dado por aprender más y más lenguas. Como podéis ver en la imagen, la palabra kiwi (de origen maorí, aunque de eso hablaremos en otro post) no se diferencia mucho entre un idioma u otro.

Tanto en inglés como en español comparten grafías, pero en japonés se escribe キウイ, y se pronuncia algo así como Kiui. Algo curioso de esta palabra, como algunos con nociones de japonés ya se habrán dado cuenta, es que no tiene un kanji propio, algo común entre palabras de origen no nipón.
