- SYNOPSIS
Everybody knows that the Isle after midnight belongs to something else. It hunts the sheep that farmers, too stupid to put their animals away behind iron fences, leave out. It stalks the salt bitten shores and calls and calls and those unlucky enough to answer are never seen again. It walks in the dreams of the Scorpio Girls and they wake up every morning hollow eyed and knowing.
Finch has always lived on St Helena. She's not a Scorpio Girl, doesn't attend the fancy boarding school they put there some time during the 1800's, doesn't dream of death and impossible things. But she isn't like the outsiders either. She has the lay of the land in her bones. She knows not to trust the storm grey waves, knows to lock her door and salt the entrance every night. She's seen the deathmarch at midnight, seen the dead sheep and the bodies left behind when it comes out. She knows that St Helena is haunted and hunted and she knows how to survive. To stay away from the Scorpio Girls or see her own death in their eyes.
But when her brother goes missing the day she pulls a Scorpio Girl out of the waves, Finch might have to break all her rules to get him back.

âł â CHARACTER INTRODUCTIONS.
FUNKE. 25. SHE/HER. One of the most prolific scavengers on this side of universe, Funke is more often known as the illusive âCrowâ as a result of the level of goods she manages to unearth out of the most unlikely places. The deal between her and Imaan has the possibility to change the trajectory of everything she deems normal.
IMAAN. 25. SHE/HER. Exceedingly furtive, the meeting between her and Funke goes off with many a hitch. Unfortunately, the scavenger/ship captain is her only hope of escaping her past, that of which only her and Rafe knowâso theyâll have to figure out how to get along.
HANI. 26. SHE/HER. Lady Hani is many things. Kingpin of the criminal underworld, and socialite supreme in a plethora of circles⊠and Funkeâs ex. Hani opens up doors that even Funkeâs connections canât reach, and that makes her an integral part of the chessboard, despite lingering ties.
HERON. 26. HE/HIM. Lady Haniâs right hand man, Heron errs on whatever side of the law benefits the both of them, and their outfit. Disney Prince-esque in charm alone, despite the glorified bodyguard and ex-merc traits. Kind, despite himself.Â
RAFE. 26. HE/HIM. Mercenary for hire, currently on long-term payroll under Imaanâs banner, Rafeâs mouth is sealed shutâboth due to the many credits paid in advance and secrets not yet told. Insufferable, but great to have on deck for a fight.
YAYA. 25. SHE/HER. Yes, THEE Yaya Starburst, the galaxyâs #1 Princess of Pop. Yayaâs universal bounds of love knows no boundsâfans found within their crew-mates, too. As per her current hiatus and pull away from all things musical, sheâs making her moves in some (misguided?) journalism⊠and this could be the break the Larissa crew need.Â

Welcome to The Garden! We are a group/network dedicated to supporting, providing resources to, and creating a space for neurodivergent and/or disabled writers. We would also love for this to be a space for resources and advice with writing neurodivergent and disabled representation.Â
We are pro self-diagnosis and completely welcoming of those who think they may be neurodivergent and/or disabled but donât have a solid answer or access to resources. We as a group cannot ultimately decide where the boundaries of neurodivergence and disability end, but we welcome those who are questioning or are unsure if they fall under the neurodivergent and disabled umbrellas but want to find community with those who share your experiences. Weâre also welcoming of those with invisible illnesses.
However, we do not accept bigots of any kind, nor do we accept those who excuse plagiarism. We intend for The Garden to be a safe space for all.
While the network is for all ages, the Discord server is 16+. This is for the safety and comfort of everyone involved. Those under 16 are still free to use the resources we provide, follow the blog, send asks, and use the tracking tag (#ndgtracking).
That all being said, we are still under heavy construction. We need feedback from you guys on how to run this network as well as the Discord server. Please, if youâre able to, check out this Google Form and provide any feedback you can!
This blog and the Discord server are not ready for operation yet, as we would like to get some feedback. However, we will let you know when they are!
Neurotypical and able-bodied people, please boost this post so that itâs able to reach more people!
I am once again asking you to at least read some magical realism before calling your wip magical realism.
For writing tips about magical realism, @rossafabula wrote this super nice post about its basic characteristics.
And it isnât much, but about the line between magical realism and fantasy, this is more or less the essay I wrote for uni about why The Ocean at the End of the Lane is similar to magical realism. Though, in my opinion, it will never be magical realism because itâs written within a fantasy tradition and doesnât interact with the magical realism canon. Bonus: you get my view of why Panâs Labyrinth can be either fantasy or magical realism (it depends if you interpret the magic as real=fantasy, or as Opheliaâs imagination/both=magical realism) because Panâs Labyrinth interacts with the Latin American tradition.
And do you need examples with actual writeblr wips? I can mention @rossafabula again, and also @mp-golfinâ, who are Latinx writeblrs like me and were also writing magical realism, last time I checked.
I donât know if this will help, but look, I have wip examples. I write both magical realism and fantasy (and sci-fi). And my magical realism wip (9C) actually grew from a fantasy premise! Weâre talking about works in progress, so thereâs nothing wrong with changing genres as you draft, or even figuring out how to write something on the go. Like I canât throw a rock on that roof.
But if you look at even just the summaries I post, please tell me you can see how differently magical realism and fantasy approach a story?? Comparing a magical realism wip with a contemporary fantasy wip, which people often mistake as being the same thing:
Nine Tales (9C):Â Gael, a boy who wants to be a writer, arrives with his aunt and cousins (and uncleâs ghost) at a beach town, where theyâll be staying at a B&B, where his mother once âfound herselfâ after going through a divorce when Gael was a baby. Hope the same will happen to them, because all these characters are going through a rough spot. At the B&B, an old storyteller (who might not even be human) amazes Gael with his stories and inspires him to write his own.
Babsâ Journey:Â One summer afternoon when Babs and their friends were little, they came across a car accident. A girl lay motionless on the asphalt, their first contact with death. As the kids hurried away, though, something caught their attention: a pile of round red stones. Each of them took one, and later no one remembered where theyâd gotten it. That was nine years ago. Now a ghost called Luce is asking Babs their help to get back all the stones that represent her debt to the Spirit Court, so she can be free. Togetherâand with the aid of a spirit taking the shape of a giant owlâBabs and Luce will have to travel the human and the spirit worlds to find Babsâ friends and complete Luceâs last tasks, before the sun rises again on their journey.
I can cross out the magic elements in 9C so easily, and the basic plot of the story doesnât change. Itâs about a boy finding his place in a world that often doesnât make sense, while surrounded by people who are also lost. Only that⊠the âdoesnât make senseâ takes a physical form. Thereâs a ghost and a guy whoâs (ambiguously) not human. I canât cross out the magic in my contemporary fantasy wip, because that in italics is the whole plot of the story. The quest structure is optional for fantasy, but if magic is central to the story, it isnât magical realism.
Because, if you read magical realism, you see that it is either realism, and by that I do mean full-blown contemporary/historical literature, where magic is an âunimportantâ detail (see The House of the Spirits, for example), or something similar to surrealism. Think Kafkaâs Metamorphosis. Itâs a plot so wild thereâs no way to mistake it for fantasy, or any other kind of genre fiction.
And look above. Iâm not a published magical realism author or anything. Itâs my first time writing a magical realism novel. But I know enough about the genre to at least be able to tell what Iâm aiming for, and what I want it to be similar to. Something in The House of the Spirits style, but with a so much more simple plotâjust the protagonist and his aunt/cousins solving some personal issues.
Also, I didnât introduce 9C as magical realism when it wasnât yet. Actually Iâm still owing my friends a wip introduction, oops. My advice is: if you arenât sure what genre you want? Thereâs nothing wrong with saying that! Any of these, plus a vague summary of your idea, should be good for an early draft:
âI donât know yetâ
âIâm still figuring it outâ
âIâm considering [genre] or magical realismâ *
âMaybe magical realism with elements of [genre]â *
* IF YOUR IDEA COULD BE MAGICAL REALISM. RESEARCH FIRST.Â
Let go of the belief that you can write only in one genre. Thatâs how you stifle your creativity. Donât be afraid to experiment, donât be afraid to try something new. You can write whatever you want, and you donât have to label yourself. Your imagination can lead you in many different directions. You should be open to new ideas, you should allow your imagination to express itself on every level.

frankenstein is about self loathing and recognition through the Other. itâs about the original sin. itâs about what we owe to our creations and each other. itâs about internalized homophobia and the monstrosity of a man desiring another man. itâs about Romance. itâs about romance. itâs about playing god. itâs about being transgender. itâs about the absent fathergod. itâs about society. itâs about unethical medical experiments. itâs about gay college dropouts. itâs about a big nasty monster dude who is, and i cannot stress this enough, spooky
chloeswords --> dallonswords

oops! i feel ~weird making these posts so iâm just gonna get all my feelings out there at once and then finally breathe. iâm nonbinary/transmasc and my ~masc name is dallon đ. those are the labels that speak to me at least. as an autie, iâve always felt like i experience gender differently even within the trans community at times, it doesnât feel like anything i can label, it feels like this fluid thing that just is. me! itâs also good old fashioned lover boy by queen. best way i can describe it is ânonbinary to the (masc) leftâ. itâs less of a strict identity and more of a Letting Myself ExistÂ
chloe is also not a deadname. i canât come out IRL, so chloe is dallon and dallon is chloe and accepting that as a good thing was the most important part of getting to this point. but, since i can be out here, and this is also gonna be my penname, please call me dallon đ€© i also really donât have a problem with she/her pronouns (again, have to use those irl and i donât want to form a negative connotation with them) but what can i say, he/they is immensely sexier đ
i have to say that whilst this has been literal years in the making, i feel like iâm ~speedrunning a gender revelation rn and thatâs still ongoing. i felt like i had to have all the objective answers and commit to them permanently and thatâs what scared me. it made me hate this part of myself because it was eating away at me and i didnt want to deal with it because i thought it had to be this Big Moment that changed everything but really, nothing has changed except iâm listening to myself. so to any of yâall going through something similar pls know you donât have to know all the answers, just give yourself love and patience and most importantly listen to yourself.
support neurodivergent/disabled writeblrs!
after talking with other nd friends, we came to the same conclusion that writeblr is not a very neurodivergent/disabled friendly space, and more can be done to support and uplift neurodivergent/disabled creators. iâve wanted to make a post for a while specifically to uplift our voices and! thatâs what iâm gonna do!Â
if you are a neurodivergent and/or disabled creator, feel free to reblog this post and boost yourself/wips! (does not have to be ownvoices!)
neurotypical and/or able bodied creators, please reblog and boost this post, and check out the creators in the notes!
I always knew that the content creating community has a tendency to make neurodivergent and disabled people feel left out, but I never knew how alone you all felt. It makes my heart ache.
Iâm sorry that we as a community, even those who are also neurodivergent and/or disabled, have been isolating, ignoring, and sometimes been outright hurtful to those who are looking for a safe place to be themselves and share art. We need to be better about uplifting and supporting these voices. And not just through reblogs or ask games or interactions based on content, but interactions based on genuine care and compassion.
Support neurodivergent content creators. Support disabled content creators. Especially support these content creators who have other marginalized identities where their experiences with neurodivergency and disability canât separated from.
And to those who have felt alone in this space, know that you are not. We are here, we are numerous, and we will look out for each other.
