With this perfect gifset I can finally share the story that this exact moment prompted. I saw Chicago at like 13. I saw it in theaters when my older sister snuck me in and I’d been raving about it to my friend across the street ever since. We finally got to watch it together when it came out on video.

When this moment came on screen and Velma says, “There’s only one business in the world where that’s no problem at all,” there’s a beat.

Into that silent space my friend melodramatically whispered, “Murder,” with every sincerity. He really thought they were gonna run off together and go on a killing spree.

When he looked over to see me staring at him in bafflement I just countered with, “Jazz.”

He was mortified and his comment lives rent free in my head every time I see this scene.

Been thinking more about Lena being sent to Camelot after she has a grasp on her magic. Like, not full grasp, but enough to be able to control it and have fully embraced it.

So when she's thrust back to Camelot, she's forced to hide it, to deny it. Until she finds a band of druids, who teach her and help her come into her full power. I wonder if they would make her a high priestess, for the potency of her power, her empathy and kindness, and her swift mastery of the arcane.

I also wonder what would happen if Lena's druid camp were attacked by either raiders or knights. She'd want to protect them, and well... she doesn't have fencing experience for nothing.

If she's captured, I don't think she'll be mistaken for Morgana. She'll look more peasant than wild witch (or highborn princess), and few people actually know what Morgana even looks like, so the risk of being identified as a doppelganger is low.

But what if Lena were to stumble upon a wounded Arthur? Or maybe one of his knights? She would try to help them, surely. I imagine she'd earn a friend in the process, and an advocate. Especially as she wouldn't ask for anything in return. No bargain or trade for the man's life, just care and treatment because it's the right thing to do.

So if Lena is ever captured with her band of druids, and taken to Camelot, she'll have at least one ally to speak in her defense.

I'm also going to cannibalize an idea I was keeping in reserve for a merlin fic I was going to write but likely never will, in that at some Lena is chained using magic-dampening manacles right?

And of course in her hour of need her power overcomes the dampening and breaks the manacles from her wrists... but the sheer power she creates leaves a ribbon of scar tissue circling up her arms-- mimicking the red ribbons worn on the arms of all high priestesses of the old religion. (The ribbons are actually symbols of the scars the earliest/first high priestess had, which Lena now bears.)

And its the scars that make Lena the highest of High Priestesses.
