When Snafu decided to join the Marines, he had no idea what to expect from his time during the war. He heard stories about World War I but all the people he heard about fought in Europe, unlike him, who was supposed to fight in a foreign country that he barely know where it was. When they landed on the first island, though, he couldn’t help but appreciate the beauty of that small piece of paradise. Soon, however, he realized that Japan was everything but the paradise he saw the first time, and after fighting in the mud, under the rain, with the smell of rotten coconuts stick on his guts, he was sure that was hell.
He was getting used to it, though. Or so he was convincing himself.
Truth be told, Snafu was sick of it all. Sick of those fucking Japs, those stupid islands, those disgusting rotten coconuts and deep down, even of war. He was sure he wasn’t going to make it to the end of the war, but he promised himself he would put his whole fucking self to fight those Japs and their filthy army, even if it was the last thing he did.
The cigarette was rested between his lips and Snafu was staring up at the blue, sunny sky. He heard the noise of a plane and he could see it in the distance, but he wasn’t worried. Instead, he stayed there, sitting down and leaning back against a tree, enjoying the last few minutes of calm before the storm.
A voice caught his attention and his blue, big eyes moved up to meet the gaze of one of the nurses. He smirked when she asked him a smoke and without saying a word, he took his cigarette pack, handing the woman two of his Lucky Strikes. Nothing compared to his beloved non-filter cigarettes.
“No need t'be so fuckin’ formal, honey.”
