Jason Todd (Robin) x Reader
“You’re early.” You grinned widely, giving Robin a light nudge as he landed and sat beside you on your balcony. “Its just past midnight. I usually don’t see you until a couple hours later.” Summer was here which meant the Boy Wonder had switched over to wearing his summer uniform in all its short sleeve and no-pant glory. Suffice it to say it took you some getting used to, which only resulted in a hoard of teasing from Robin for “basking” at his amazing leg muscles.
“That’s because I’m off tonight.” The boy smiled back then gestured to his suit. “I only put this thing on so that I could come and see you.”
It was moments like this that you wondered if Robin really understood what he was saying to you or if you were simply reading much deeper into nothing more than friendly conversation. The week before, he had been running around so much that he was only able to pop over long enough to say a quick “Hey” before having to run off again. You eventually asked why he wouldn’t just wait until he was actually free to hang out and, like it was nothing, he responded by telling you “’Cause I had to see my girl” then he left. It wasn’t like you hadn’t had friends that called you their girl, but they were usually other girls, it was normal, like calling someone a buddy. But Robin was not a girl, he was a guy, a completely different ball game that you couldn’t really comprehend. He was somebody that liked to joke and be sarcastic and sometimes you couldn’t tell whether or not he was kidding when he said the things that turned you into a human tomato. All you could do was try to shrug it off and keep the conversation going, “Is it for a special occasion?”
He hummed and leaned back on his hands looking up at the night sky, “You could say that. It is my birthday.” Then he faced back to you.
“Your birthday?” Your eyes widened in surprise, suddenly feeling even more special.
“Yep, as of about twelve minutes ago.”
Taking a moment to look around, you suddenly felt a bit of shame in always making him stay here on your little balcony or even in the small confines of your bedroom. Every time he came to see you, it was the same and now he’d made a special trip for his birthday and you wanted it to be different. “Let’s go somewhere! Wherever you want!” You declared eagerly.
With a light chuckle Robin simply asked, “Why?”
“Cause it’s your birthday! And on one’s birthday your supposed to do something fun and amazing and different than the everyday.” You explained, flailing your arms about like a maniac while you got your point across.
He raised an eyebrow at you, paused, then leaned up to cross his arms at you, “You do realize that if we leave that you will technically be sneaking out, right?” as you reacted by freezing up, Robin couldn’t help but stare while he watched you contemplate your next move. He saw your face contort into a look of worry; his breath caught for a split second when you nervously bit your bottom lip. He was so sure you’d change your mind and think of something else to do, which wouldn’t have bothered him, but then you set your gaze on him. You took a breath and he could see your whole demeaner change.
“You think of a place. I’ll put on some shoes.”
When you came back out to the balcony ready with shoes and a jacket, it seemed that the boy Robin felt a swell of happiness as he took hold your hands to wrap your arms around his neck and said, “Hold on tight.” Hooked one of his arms around your waist then swooped off the ledge.
At first your eyes were squeezed shut as you suddenly felt the wind whipping past you until you finally were able to take a breath and peek just over Robins shoulder to see the array of skyscrapers and cars and lights passing behind the two of you. It was a beautiful sight to take in. Flying like this made you feel as if time had frozen. You couldn’t hear anything outside of the whooshing wind, the only other thing that caught your attention was the smell wafting through your nostrils. It was subtle and earthy with a hint of sweetness…it was Robin. Your nose was practically buried into his collarbone taking in the scent. It seemed intensely awkward, to be smelling this person, as if you were trying to analyze his chemical makeup piece by piece. You quickly concluded that something was missing, a piece that you could specifically remember being a part of this scent when you weren’t nearly as close to him, but you couldn’t quite put your finger on what is was…
Once the two of you landed on a building a few stories taller than your apartment you withdrew your hold and separating yourself from the boy, to which he quickly responded, “Oh, no, no, no.” ticking his index finger at you and closing your distance again. “Where are we right now?”
You peered around, then shrugged at him, “I don’t know, on a rooftop.”
“Exactly, you have one of these and it probably looks exactly the same. We’re not there yet.” Without warning you were wrapped back into his grasp as he reangled his grapple to a much taller skyscraper towering not far from the two of you and pulled towards it, the line quickly growing shorter to bring you to its tip.
The top of this building was not that of any regular apartment building. Instead of being flat, it had a dome top that pointed into an antenna, and just above its tallest floor stemming from each corner were large stone gargoyle statues. The area on the gargoyle corners was large enough for you and Robin to land on.
“Here we are.” Keeping you close, Robin carefully turned your body to face the view. It far surpassed the blur you caught while flying by. The two of you were now much higher up, you could see much further, all the way to where the city lights ended. “You like it?”
You nodded with a smile, “It’s definitely not like my rooftop.” Wanting to take in the view from every angle, you suddenly got the bright idea to look down, which only managed to make your stomach drop, “A bit high up, but still pretty.” The boy chuckled but made the decision to move you two in further from the edge to sit beside each other. You sat crisscross and gave nervous eyes when you noticed Robin positioned lazily with one bent knee and the other leg hanging loosely off the statues edge, which he obviously noticed because after a few moments he decided to hang both legs over the edge and start swinging them accompanied by some overly obnoxious whistling. “I ought to just push you right off.” You glared at him playfully.
“That’s not a very nice thing to say.” He scoffed furrowing his brows dramatically, “And on my birthday, too!”
After a quaint moment of silence, you inquired, “So, is this where you take all your girls, Robin?” You tried to make it come out sounding like more of a joke than an actual question but weren’t really sure if you had succeeded.
With a small sigh, Robin answered, “You said yourself that I should do something different on my birthday, something special.” He then scooted himself close so that his shoulder could touch yours “The only person that ever comes here is me, this is kinda like my own free space…I wouldn’t have brought just anyone here.”
He was staring at you, with every inch of seriousness etched into his expression, yet you couldn’t manage to think up any response to his confession. You honestly had no words, but the feeling swelling in your chest was stronger than you had ever experienced before. You wanted to somehow convey that to him, to Robin. So, without breaking your gaze, you took the hand that laid beside yours and held it. Maintaining the silence, Robin slowly fixed his grasp so that he could intertwine his fingers with yours. It’s no surprise that after that, you two could barely look at each other anymore, both of your faces had grown visibly red, so you turned back out to face Gotham trying to focus on anything else but the intimacy of the previous moment. *Which main street is that green light? How many floors were on this building? How long have you two been up here? It was gonna be a pain getting down from this thing, you’re probably going to be burying your face into his shoulder again and sniffing him like a creeper…* That’s when you finally realized the smell that was missing earlier….
He hummed softly, his thumb already rubbing absent-mindedly along your hand even as he looked away.
“When did you quit smoking?”
Almost instantly the boy released your hand to check his non-existent watch, “Oh. Gosh. Look. At. The. Time. I should really be going, so let’s get you back home, stat.” He declared dramatically. Popping up to a stand he pulled you up just as quickly keeping his lenses averted from your eyes. Searching wildly along his belt he couldn’t seemed to find what he needed all of a sudden, “Now where did I put that grapple?”
“Robin.” You called to him lightly, but he couldn’t hear you anymore. You couldn’t help but slightly enjoy this rare bout of nervousness he was having so abruptly. As he continued patting himself down, you slowly reached down to pick up his contraption that had presumably fallen off while he was lying about. The way his mouth was twisted let you know that now would probably not be the time to tease Robin about the visible reddish tint shrouding his ears, so you simply handed him the grapple gun once you got his attention. “Robin, I-”
“It’s no big deal, (Y/n).” He sighed, “I only stopped because my brother kept ragging about it.” He awkwardly rubbed the scruff of his neck; a habit you had realized he only did when he was lying.
“Of course, I was just asking because I couldn’t smell it anymore. Now it’s just you, a-and it’s nice.”
The rubbing stopped and you could see Robins mouth folding inward in attempt to conceal his incoming cheeky grin, “So, what you’re saying is… that you’ve been sniffing me, on a regular basis? And yet I’m the one with stalker tendencies?”
After such a verbal attack you crossed your arms and made a severely pathetic attempt at defense, “It’s a really strong smell…okay? Pungent, even!”
“That’s redundant.” Robin teased in a singsong tone.
In a split second, the Boy Wonder had pressed a quick peck upon your lips and returned to preparing his grapple for departure just as rapidly.
