We learn that the closest Ruben has ever felt to someone was through sexual violence, which he then goes on to enact on Niall their whole lives. He sought intimacy with him the only way he knew how, awakening Niall's sexuality perhaps in a similar way his own was. Irrevocably linking the two things. Conflicting attraction and revulsion. But there is love there under it all. At the heart of this relentless conflict, lies a love story.
the way niall has consistently met good understanding people who would've patiently helped him work through his shit and #heal but he is utterly incapable of making any decision that doesn't center around clawing ruben into his life in the most fucked up ways imaginable like even just to feel the ghost of his presence or the full attention of his anger he blows his life up and everyone in it just for a scrap of ruben just for a glimpse just for a hug or a smile or a punch time and time again ok ok ok
what exactly was lori's breaking point when she knew niall had to get away from ruben. what was it that pushed her to say 'don't call ruben'. what the hell did she walk in on.
"ok so as you know (ok fine. as everybody knows) i have very many Thoughts Feelings and Opinions about this and a literal million different scenarios and specifics for what it was and how it could've gone and the build up and the enmeshment and the codependency etc etc etc but i think in the end it was rather quite simple like, she noticed it not at all and then all at once, and it could've been a million physical things she never thought about but in my head it was much simpler than that and it goes something like: she or maura or or someone says something that she would've totally expected niall to disagree with or object to or otherwise just be kind of a prat about except that time he doesn't. he's silent, and when she looks at him he's not looking at her, he's looking at ruben, and she realizes he's waiting to see what ruben's going to say first, how ruben's going to react, waiting to see if he should go along with it or try to temper ruben down, and she just has this all at once dawning horrifying moment where she realizes niall might be ruben's brother, but he's acting like his fucking /wife/, always putting himself off the gauge of ruben, making himself fit around the shape of ruben, and she realizes that's what she used to do with niall's father, back when they were still together, and that's when she knows she's gotta get him out before he gets in too deep (she's much, much too late, of course. whether or not that's her fault is left up to the reader to decide)."
@bruisecest you wrote this in the comments and i had to copy it onto here to marvel at it because YES.
@lazybakerart: #the horror of lori realizing niall's shaped himself into a wife #the worst thing lori ever did to herself and niall's gone and done it too
half man is a horror show about the inescapable pitfalls of heterosexual marriage when you really think about it lowkey
when the yaoi has toxic overtones, manipulation, genuine abuse, gross crossing of normal boundaries and psychosexual obsession

Honestly that Niall/Mona dynamic goes CRAZY for me. People were like "omg he is such a villain and dick to her" and they're not wrong but she is also a legitimately shitty person AND imperfect victim x2 and I adore her for that.
(Like, it must be addressed that girl had a fully willing and active role in molesting Niall with Ruben back in ep1, but at the end of the day they were all kids and not one of them conceptualized it that way and that's kinda On Society more than anything. Can't stay mad at her for it! It's not like that's why he hates her! A truth captured horribly well in this series is sometimes trauma happens without the traumatizer even really knowing what they did.)
Idk, I love their weird sisterwife shit! Love her calling Ruben "our boy" to him and whatever nonverbalized Thing was going on there. Love the shared understanding and semi-sincere pity that curdles so *instantly* into blame and resentment. Love that they arguably have the Worst Sex in a show that is chock full of really bad sex and then look at each other like a shot out of a horror movie. Love that the circumstances actively mirror Alby in the trashed apartment in ep2 'cause time is a flat circle.
Love that he shows up at her house like "that meant nothing we're gonna put this behind us" and she's like "you're right we should put this behind us 👍" and he immediately gets pissy that she's agreeing with him and not stressed out about it. Love when he makes the insane leap of trying to shame her like "omg but you slept with his brother" and she has to go YOU ARE THE BROTHER, wtf are you judging me about?!?
Love that "it's not gay sex if you don't fall in love" and "it's not cheating if your novel is just really really good" are two ideas that have coexisted in Niall Kennedy's brain. Love that him being gay and smol and crying every 10 minutes does not stop their whole relationship from being nice-guy™ misogyny poisoned.
Love when he tells her to stop drinking and take care of her kid while he's on cocaine and not taking care of his kid! Love how she talks about Baird needing a Masculine Figure in his life even if (or because) it's the guy who keeps putting people in comas and Niall is halfheartedly like well what about me and she's like what ABOUT you lmao. Love that they got into a loud ass argument about their bastard child AT A FUNERAL with their faces 3 inches from each other and it was the least heterosexual thing to ever happen.
Love that somewhere in both of their lizard brains, they keep circling around and back to a single, mutual, implicit threat that is at its core: Do you know how fast I could get Ruben to kill you. 🙃
gay weddings are pretty much the same as straight weddings except for the part where one of the grooms has to wait for permission from his brotherloverabuser to say “i do”
half man has that dead ringers kind of rotten brotherhood in it but more deranged like. they made the most codependent pair of men you've ever seen and they're not even blood related. which is actually insane. they are tethered together by something far more humiliating and ungovernable than dna and i need everyone to sit with that
Been hearing some debate around whether or not Ruben truly accepts Niall's sexuality in Half Man and wanted to put my two cents in!
Ruben's attitude towards queerness is demonstrated to us early on in the show with his usage of slurs and stereotypical "macho man" criticisms towards weakness in men which is often (though wrongly) aligned with femininity.
While one could argue that he's accepting of the relationship between Maura and Lori, this doesn't automatically equate to him being an "ally." There are tons of men in the world who are "okay" with lesbians but view gay men as weak and disgusting. Not saying that Ruben is that, it goes deeper, but just that his uncaring perspective towards Lori and Maura doesn't mean he's okay with Niall's sexuality.
But here's the thing — Ruben is an abusive manipulator who utilizes weakness and insecurities to maintain control over the people in his life. He keeps Mona financially and socially dependent on him so that she has no one else to turn to. He switches between the good son and the explosive one towards Maura to play on her trauma and love for him. And for Niall, Ruben has an exhaustive list of insecurities to prey on.
Ruben can switch between whatever behavior suits him: the good husband, the generous brother, the dutiful son, and the violent man. All this guarantees him control. How does this relate to Niall's sexuality and Ruben's (perhaps) acceptance of it?
It matters because Niall's sexuality IS his greatest insecurity. And Ruben knows this.
Even though Ruben "suspected" that Niall is gay, his closeted behavior was still something he could attack to keep Niall under his thumb. He suspected Niall was gay and still made him have sex with Mona. He suspected Niall was gay and still called him slurs and ribbed at him for it.
While this is all homophobic behavior, definitely on top of being abusive, I don't think we can say he only did this because he's disgusted by queerness. Ruben switches up to whatever suited him, and in this case what suited him was to keep Niall crippled by his insecurities and dose him with enough confidence after that Niall would feel like he can only feel truly strong by Ruben's side.
In a way, Ruben does accept Niall's sexuality. He accepts that it's the key to keeping Niall hooked on him. Does this mean he's a gay ally? Not really, no. Being an ally isn't conditional. Do I think he hates gay men? Also, no. But hate is a powerful tool for manipulation, as is acceptance.
