3 A blog full of my poems and short stories and other musings. And occasionally pictures of stars. And cute things. Because who doesn't love those?! <3
Lucy wakes hot and uncomfortable from a string of horrible nightmares. She tries to wipe her eyes but can’t move her hands. She looks down and sees chains around her wrists. She looks around beginning to panic. She struggles but finds that her ankles have been restrained as well. She seems to be sitting in a large chair of some kind, that looks like it’s made of the same strange black metal that her restraints are.
What the hell is she wearing? It seems to be a long and ornate black and deep green ballgown of some kind, very old fashioned.
~”I don’t even own anything like this. And where the hell am I?”~ She is full of questions. She looks around frantically. She doesn’t recognise any of her surroundings. The room is large with vaulted ceilings and seems to be made of dark stone. There is a large opening in the wall opposite her. Beyond she can see a wasteland, red and black. Everything looks scorched. She can see other buildings. Other than the window, there is almost nothing in the room, and worse there is not a soul in sight.
“Help!” Lucy screams at the top of her lungs. The air is hot and tastes acrid. She begins to scream without any words, in fear and panic.
“Do calm down, my darling. It won’t do you any good.”
Alexander’s smooth, languid voice comes from just behind her. She strains to see him but he is just out of her sight. She feels a hand run through her hair and she shivers.
“What are you doing? Where are we? Why am I here?” Questions tumble from Lucy’s mouth like rain from a cloud. Alexander’s laugh rings out, clear and cold as he walks into view. Lucy begins to pull at her restraints and stops quickly as they seem to burn her. Alexander is dressed sharply, in human clothes and form, she realizes with a jolt. He’s beautiful. This thought shocks and repulses her. She’s his prisoner, he’s kidnapped her. She can’t be thinking things like that. Her thought must have flitted across her face because his expression changes. He looks at her with what almost looks like want.
“See something you like?” Alexander hums in a low, and to Lucy’s discomfort, sexy voice. He saunters around and stands in front of her. Her heart begins to race and she isn’t really sure why. Alexander waves his hand and the chains binding Lucy slide away. She stands up and begins to run.
“I wouldn’t do that, if I were you.” Lucy stops short, and turns slowly.
“And why should I not try and get away from my kidnapper?” Alexander’s face is suddenly serious.
“Because, Lucy, I can’t protect you if you leave this room. They aren’t going to obey you yet.” The way her name rolls off his tongue, send a jolt of something through her. She pushes it away and stares at him as he stalks towards her.
“Who is they?” Her voice trembles.
“The others. The demons that lurk just outside these walls. They don’t know to fear you yet. But they will.” Lucy knows she should move. But she doesn’t. Her breath catches as Alexander moves closer and closer to her. Suddenly he is so close, she can feel the heat radiating from his body.
“They will learn to fear you.” He breathes. “They will learn, the same as they learned to fear me.”
Nate wakes to find himself on the floor, covered in blood. Her blood. He scrambles up looking around, desperate, but Lucy and Alexander are gone. Nate growls in frustration and punches the floor. He stands and looks at the carnage laid out before him. A complete sense of numbness sweeps over him. He begins to clean. The scents of bleach and blood mingle as Nate strips and remakes the bed throwing anything that cannot be cleaned, without washing, into a bag. He jumps in the shower. Tears of loss and helplessness mingle with the water flowing down his torn visage. The pain from the scratches barely registers in his chaotic thoughts.
Once he has dried and dressed in some spare clothes he stashed in Lucy’s drawers months ago, he picks up the bag of bloodied things. Nate grabs her keys and closes the door behind him. He locks up her apartment and adds the keys to his own. He wanders home on auto pilot and notices how light it has become. As he draws closer to his own house he feels more and more lost. He tuns the key in the door and pushes through. He stops short. Rai is standing by the stairs.
“Hey.” She murmurs, a small smile creeping over her flawless face. Rai is a vision. Her delicate features alight with warmth, her blonde hair pulled back into a messy ponytail with the sun behind her. It almost looks like a halo. She has a coffee cup in one hand and her phone in the other. She slides it into the pocket of her dressing gown and moves towards him. Nate’s stomach drops out as he forces a smile onto his face. He drops the bag, holds out his arms and lets her walk into them.
“Hey Rai.” He mumbles into her hair as he holds her. She draws back and pushes the coffee cup into his hand.
“Here. Drink this. You look like crap.” She smiles and her eyes flick to the bag beside him. Nate bends down and picks it up.
“I’m just tired. I want to get that gardening done before work later.” He pushes past her and through the kitchen to the garden. Rai stares after him, smiling and decides to make him lunch while he works.
Nate goes to the bonfire bin and throws the bag on the ground beside it. He grabs the shears out of the shed, along with a rake. He sets to work, scraping together the dead and dying grass which he’d cut down, but not collected, a couple of days ago. He revels in the mundane task, working his muscles, clouding his mind with the sensations. He throws the grass into the bin, careful to pull it to one side. He grabs the bag and empties it into the other side. He collects the few branches, leaves and sticks left over from the last bonfire they’d had and throws them in. He pulls out his cigarettes. He opens the packet. One left. Fantastic. He lights it and then the now empty packet and throws it into the bonfire bin. The dried grass catches quickly, soon lighting everything else. He stands for a while watching them burn. He hastily rubs his arm aggressively over his face and sets about cutting more branches from the bushes. Thank the gods that Rai insists the place is so neat.
“Nathan! I made you lunch.” Rai calls from the kitchen. “Come inside before it gets cold.” Nate bristles.
“Let’s eat out in the sunshine, babe.” He throws the branches onto the fire and drags the table up the garden to the patio. Rai brings out two glasses and a bottle of wine and goes back for the food. Nate takes a long swig from the bottle and is just pouring wine into the glasses when Rai returns with food. Steak for him and a small salad for her.
“Your favorite.” She smiles and leans back in her chair, closing her eyes and tilting her head towards the sun as Nate begins to eat. The smell of the fire, of his failure to protect her is everywhere. As he continues to eat, he begins to feel dizzy. His knife and fork clatter on the metal table. He hears Rai’s laughter, as if through water.
“You’re all mine now.”
And for the second time in twenty four hours, Nate’s world goes dark.
Adraiana smiles down at her unconscious fiance. Alexander had been right. He had told her, as they laid in the wake of their passion, that Nate would be back today. He had given her the elixir that she put into Nate’s food and it worked, just like he said it would.
Nate turns slowly as Alexander removes his hand from Nate’s shoulder. Nate is a little surprised as he looks at Alexander. He’s not at all frightening. He’s tall, yes, but he’s dressed in a sharp, black suit. Looks designer. His shirt is crisp and black, open at the next. His hair is dirty blonde, with that windswept look that always takes so long to achieve. Nate should know, he spends about half an hour or more on that look every morning and at least once more during the day. Alexander could, in fact, have stepped right out of an Armani advert. Nate glanced back at Lucy and squares his shoulders as he turns back towards the other man.
“So you’re Alexander. What the hell is it you want with Lucy And what did you do to her last night?” Nate watches as a smirk creeps across Alexander’s chiselled face.
“You’ve been defiling my property Nathaniel. And you’re spoken for already. Naughty boy.” Alexander drawls. “I scratched her. I know you saw it. And like I said, she belongs to me. What I intend to do with my darling Lucille is my concern, not yours. Now run on home to Adraiana.“
Nate flinches a little at Rai’s name and a flash of guilt goes through him as he remembers what happened behind him not so long ago. He tries to attack Alexander as his guilt turns to rage but he finds he can’t move. Alexander laughs, a horrible, cruel laugh. He walks around Nate’s suddenly useless body and sits on the bed beside Lucy. Nate looks round and discovers he can move his head.
“You see, Nathaniel.”
Alexander brushes Lucy’s hair from her face and Nate’s insides crawl.
“A long time ago I was summoned to this world by a woman. A woman desperate for a child and a husband who loved her and out of the abusive marriage she found herself trapped in. She asked me to dispose of her husband and bring her a new one and allow her to have a child, something which she had failed at her whole life.”
Alexander runs a finger delicately, with something that looks almost like affection, along Lucy’s soft jawline.
“In return, she promised me anything I wanted in return. Now, what man could refuse such a thing? So I agreed and my price was Lucille . Well not her specifically, but I wound up with her and to be honest, I couldn’t be happier. She’s perfect. She’s beautiful, smart with a fiery spirit. Exactly what I need.”
He slides a hand underneath Lucy and stands up holding her. Nate struggles hard. All of a sudden he can move. He swings for Alexander, who is so stunned he doesn’t even flinch. He makes his mark and his fist connects with Alexanders perfect jaw. But Alexander doesn’t move. He just laughs and with his free hand he scratches Nate’s face. He produces a blade from nowhere and slices Lucy’s neck. Nate gasps, feeling sick all of a sudden. He sprays Nate, Lucy’s bed and much of that part of the room with her blood. Almost as quickly as it started, the bleeding stops. Th gash in her neck is sealed and it looks almost like the marks on her back. Alexander chuckles again.
“Now like I said, run back to Adraiana. Though I would shower first. Goodbye Nathaniel. Lucille and I have business to attend to.”
Nate stares at Lucy’s back, a million thoughts crashing through his head. What she’s saying doesn’t make any sense. Marked? A man? Her belonging to someone? How do these wounds look weeks old? What is that black discoloration? The feel of her shaking against him breaks the spiral or questions without answers. In silence he gets up and discards the bloodied and now superfluous bandage and walks hesitantly back to her side. She turns to look at him. Tears are streaming down her face. She looks so helpless, lost and scared. His heart melts. His girl. In that split second he makes a decision. He sits down in front of her and pulls her into his arms. She sobs partly in relief, as he comforts her. Nate inhales sharply.
“So, this Alexander. Who is he? What do you mean you belong to him?” Nate’s voice shakes at that last question. He isn’t sure he wants an answer. Lucy looks up at him. His expression is unreadable.
“I don’t know exactly. I haven’t been able to find out much about him. And every time I’ve tried to ask or even talk to anyone about it, I’ve ended up locked away in some facility or another. When I was sixteen weird things started to happen. Doors opening, things moving, scratches on me. Then that weird tattoo, burn thing showed up on my rib cage.” She turns slightly to expose her body to him. Nate has been trying to focus on anything but the fact her war, soft skin is so close to his own, but now he has no choice but to look. He stares at her chest and suddenly becomes unable to focus on anything except that tattoo, mark, whatever it is. It looks almost burnt into her skin, but it’s black not red. He brushes his fingers over it. He recoils involuntarily and feels Lucy flinch. He looks at her and her face is contorted in fear and hurt.
“Sorry. I don’t know what came over me.” Nate brings his hand to her arm and strokes it gently, comforting her with both his tone and gestures. Lucy reaches up and touches his face. Nate is overcome with a feeling and without so much as a second thought he leans down and kisses her tenderly. She freezes against him for a second before pulling him closer and molding her body to his. The kiss feels desperate, all consuming. The moment is shattered by a loud buzzing. They break apart breathing heavily. Nate reaches for his phone.
“Hey. Yeah, I’m sorry Rai. Yeah, I’m with Jackson. His mum is pretty sick. Yeah, we’ve driven up to see her. I’m sorry, I know I ran out last night. I meant to call or leave you a note but we were driving all night and I crashed out.” Lucy watches Nate lie smoothly without missing a beat and a strange feeling rises in her. He’s lying to Rai. For her.
“I’ll be back tomorrow. Sure, I’ll wake you up. See you then.” Nate cuts the call and looks down at his phone. It’s eight thirty. They hadn’t even really noticed the time or the fact it had become quite dark. It had happened so gradually.
“Can I get you anything?” Nate asks softly as he sets his phone on the sideboard. Lucy bites her lip a little and shakes her head slowly before she pulls him back towards her. Their bodies crash together and they kiss urgently, as if they are each other’s sole source of oxygen. Lucy runs her slim, delicate fingers over the smooth plains of his back. She trembles with something that is most definitely not fear as his hands slide over her. They fall backwards onto her bed and Nate pulls the sheet around the, hiding them from the world.
Lucy’s head rests on Nate’s chest as they lie intertwined in the darkness. She strokes his chest without thinking and he leans down and kisses her forehead. He runs his hand down her arm and she shivers. Nate laughs and reaches for the television remote and clicks it on.
“Easy Luce. In the mood for anything in particular?” He inquires as he flicks through the channels.
“Not really, something light hearted maybe?” He nods and settles on some sitcom that they’ve both seen a hundred times. They shift a little and begin to watch the show. After a couple of episodes, Nate smiles to himself as he feels Lucy’s breathing steady and slow. Soon both are sound asleep.
Nate wakes to a loud static sound coming from the television. He reaches for the remote to turn it off, but it isn’t where he left it. The hairs on the back of his neck stand up as a terrible feeling that something is really, really wrong washes over him like a tsunami. He looks down at Lucy. She looks troubled but seems to be deeply asleep still. He shakes her gently.
“Lucy darling. Wake up. It’s just a nightmare, it’s okay but I need you to wake up.” He shakes her a little harder and speaks a little louder.
“Lucy! You’re safe, you’re just having a nightmare and I think you’re on the remote, so I need you to wake up. Why won’t you wake up?” Nate pushes Lucy’s prone figure from his arm and turns over. He seizes her shoulder and shakes her vigorously now, beginning to panic.
“LUCY!” He freezes as he feels something dig into his shoulder.
“She isn’t going to wake up Nathaniel, at least not for you.”
Nate stirs awake, warm and a little uncomfortable. It takes him a minute to realize where he is and who he’s with. A smile creeps across his face. He looks down at her tranquil face, the room is dim. He checks his phone and finds thirteen missed calls and thirty text messages from Rai. He dismisses the notifications and puts his phone on the bedside cabinet.
It’s five thirty in the afternoon. They’ve slept the whole day away. He carefully separates their bodies and goes to the kitchen. He fills the kettle and puts it on to boil. He realizes it’s been nearly a whole twenty four hours since he ate, and judging by the state of Lucy’s kitchen she probably hasn’t eaten either. He pulls off his crumpled shirt and tosses it aside. The breeze feels wonderful against his skin. Nate opens the fridge and pulls out the bacon and some milk. He flicks the grill on and starts cooking. He makes tea, just the way she likes it, and takes it over to the bed. He shakes her gently.
“Hey Luce. Hey sweetheart, wake up. It’s food time.”
Lucy stirs and makes a tiny confused noise.
~”God, she’s perfect.”~ The thought pops unbidden into Nate’s head and he smiles as she looks up at him, her eyes huge and trusting.
“Mmmmm. Hey babe. Wait, what are you-” She sits up sharply and cries out in pain.
“What the fuck?” Nate reaches out, steadying her.
“You’re hurt pretty bad Luce. Be careful.” He watches as first confusion, then realization and finally terror and shame flit across her face.
“How did you…?” She starts, sounding almost ashamed. He puts a finger to her full lips.
“You called me. I came. We’ll talk about this after breakfast. Drink your tea, bacon won’t be long. Try not to lean back, you’re gonna be hurting for a while. I’ll change the dressings after we eat.”
Lucy quietly drinks her tea, wincing occasionally while Nate makes food. The smell of the bacon drifting across the flat as it cooks is divine. She watches him as he hums tunelessly making the sandwiches.
~”He’s beautiful”~ She thinks. Nate is tall and has broad shoulders. The sight of the muscles rippling just under the porcelain skin of his back as he works sends a jolt of something right through Lucy.
Nate turns and she blushes as he catches her watching him. He runs one hand through his pitch black hair and smiles sauntering over with a plate full of food. Settling himself beside her on the bed once again, they eat in companionable silence. Once they have both finished eating and are cradling their tea, Nate turns to Lucy. His icy blue-grey eyes gazing into her grass green ones.
“So, we should talk about last night.” Lucy takes a deep breath, winces and nods her head slowly. Nate motions for her to turn around and she obliges slowly.
“I figure I’ll change your bandages while you explain. You looked kind of awkward when I asked about an explanation. So it might be easier on you this way.”
He pushes the straps of her nightdress down and his touch feels like fire against her skin.
“What the hell happened here last night, Lucy?” He asks, gently.
She takes another deep breath and it catches as he reaches around her body and pushes the cotton dress down over her chest. She swallows, steels herself and tries to focus as Nate begins to slowly peel away the bandage.
“I don’t know how to explain without you thinking I’m crazy.” She begins her voice trembling. “But I’m going to try. I’m marked. And last night He came to… remind me that I… am His. I thought I could run, but apparently I was wrong. I really thought I’d finally managed to escape Him. But I-” Nate gasps. There is three dark red marks on her back, edged with black, where just hours earlier there had been deep gouges.
“Wait, Lucy. What happened? You were bleeding and these were deep and open, and now… Who did this to you? And how the hell did you heal so fast?” He exclaims confused and on edge. Lucy swallows again.
“He calls himself Alexander but I don’t think that’s his real name.”
Nate sits at the table for what seems like an eternity. The light comes slowly. He glances out of the window at the overcast sky, feeling confused and hopeless. The air feels heavy with something that defies explanation.
Lucy sleeps fitfully on the other side of the room, while Nate keeps watch, not quite knowing what he is watching for. A whirlwind of thoughts tear through his consciousness. What happened a few hours ago? Who was it Lucy had tried to warn him about? What were the marks on her otherwise perfect body? He could summon no answers.
“I’m just one man, what can I do?” He muses aloud, troubled by the events of earlier.
“Nathan?” Her strained voice like an alarm bell brings Nate crashing back to reality. He slams down his glass and is at her side in an instant.
“Lucy, darling. It’s okay. I’m here, you’re okay.” He gently brushes her hair from her face. She weakly reaches for his hand and just misses. He smiles and moves so she can reach him. She tugs at his shirt and he moves closer. She tangles herself in him and makes a small contented noise and drifts back to sleep. He smiles against her hair and closes his eyes, as all the worry and confusion of the last few hours fade away. In this moment his Lucy is okay.
Lucy crawls to the door and waits for Nathan to knock. Soon she hears the letterbox open and hears his soft voice.
”Luce, I’m here sweetheart. It’s me. Let me in.”
Lucy drags herself away from the door and pulls it open with the last of her energy, He seems to have sapped her life force, leaving her drained and weak.
Nate pushes into the apartment and closes the door.
”I thought we put those locks in to protect from… Lucy! What the hell?”
Nate leans down and scoops her up in his arms. He carries her carefully and sets her down in a chair. As he settles her in he notices the blood on his jacket. His breath catches in his throat. He leans her forwards against his own body and bites his lip.
”Luce. Lucy! What happened? What did this to you?”
”Not what.. Who. He found me. I thought… escaped… Can’t… Run…” Lucy trails off incoherently.
”Shhh. It’s all okay. It’s going to be fine. I’m here now. I got you.”
Nate leans Lucy back against the chair gently; rushes to the bathroom, grabs the first aid kit and sets it down next to her. He gently slides the straps of her nightdress off her shoulders. It catches on the drying blood, so he carefully dabs it with water and peels it from her skin. The stained ice blue satin pools at her waist. Nate gasps as the three deep gouges in her back become visible. He quickly cleans the wounds and strokes her hair with his free hand making comforting noises, as she turns her face into his neck sending a bolt of lightning through him.
Once it’s clean, he covers the blackened fissures in her smooth, alabaster skin in an anti septic and slides a bandage around her. He leans her back gently and grabs another nightdress from the drawer. Nate softly gathers Lucy up again and stands her up, supporting her almost completely. He pulls the cotton gown over her head and guides her carefully back to bed, noting the dark stain drying on the floor. Once he has Lucy settled in bed he rushes to the door finishes bolting and chaining it and grabs the bottle of whiskey. He pours himself a glass and sits with his head in his hands for a moment. He pulls out his smokes and sparks up.
”What the hell is going on?” He murmurs to an empty room, watching the smoke spiraling in the gloom.
Lucy stands frozen by something stronger than fear. She feels the knife fall from her hand, powerless to do anything about it. She can feel herself losing control of her body. She falls to her knees.
”Darling Lucille. You knew I’d find you. You knew you couldn’t hide from me. You belong to me.”
The dark figure draws closer to her as tears roll down, as she fights to run, to move. She recoils somewhere deep in her soul as a hand caresses her face and slides down her neck and her arm tracing to her wrist. Before she registers the movement she is on her feet, the dark figure pressed up against her.
”Get off me.” She hisses under her breath. A deep, sinister laugh rolls around the room, around her very consciousness.
”My dear, you’re forgetting. You are bound to me. I will always find you. You are marked. You cannot refuse me anything”
His hand traces back up her arm and down to her waist. She suppresses the feeling of nausea and instead stops fighting.
The mark on her chest burns at his proximity. She can feel every point and every curve as if it is being scorched into her very bone. She gasps as she feels something dig into her back and drag down.
Lucy can feel the trickling of her vital fluid as it runs down her spine, soaking into her nightdress. He laughs again.
”You will submit. You were promised to me and I shall have what I was promised.”
The dark figure draws away and Lucy falls to her knees again. All at once she is alone once more. She folds in on herself and sobs, the inevitability of it all settling in upon her. She can’t fight this alone. If she can fight it at all.
She sits, turning the paper over in her trembling grip, the oppressive silence bearing down on her for what feels like an eternity. A stray sunbeam like a ray of hope falls across the foreboding warning. She rises slowly reaching for the knife and gathering the sheet around her. There is much to do.
As the afternoon draws to a close Lucy approaches the apartment block with some trepidation. After unlocking the outer door she half expects to find her own door open, but to her relief it’s closed. She unlocks the door and quickly closes it behind her and bolts it. She drops the bag and reaches for the bottle of whiskey. She pours herself a large glass and gets to work. She secures another two locks and two chains onto the door. She looks at the deadbolt and picks up her phone.
”Hey Nate. You free?”
”Hey Luce, sure what’s going on?” Lucy pauses for a moment trying to decide what to tell him.
”Need you to be manly and help me with some DIY. Rai at work?” She can almost hear him smile.
”Yeah, night shift. She just left. I’ll be right over, want me to bring anything?”
”Your drill. Thanks man.”
”No problem babe, see you in a few.”
Lucy puts down her phone and gets another glass for Nate. Five minutes later, the door bell went and she jumps, nearly dropping the whiskey bottle. She looks through the peep hole, breathes a sigh of relief and unlocks the door.
”Hey you!” Nate pulls Lucy in and holds her. He always knows when somethings wrong. He squeezes her a little and strokes her hair gently. They pull apart smiling and begin to giggle as his hand gets caught in her dark red hair. After a seconds fumbling they get themselves untangled and draw apart.
”So, what could I possibly be needing to help my independent young lady with today?” Lucy smiles and hands him the bag from the table.
”Need you to put this in.” Nathan inspects it and shrugs.
”Shouldn’t be too much of a problem m’lady. What you need it for anyhow? You seem to have made a few changes since last time I was here.” He eyes the additions to the door critically.
”Just been some break ins round here, want to be sure.” She decides not to tell him about the events of the night before, not wanting the judgement and concern that surely awaits her. Nate shrugs and gets to work.
They drink and laugh, the lock having been finished. Nate’s phone rings.
”Hey Rai. No, I’m not home. I’m out.” He rolls his eyes and Lucy stiffles a giggle.
”At Jackson’s house. No, I don’t know when I’ll be home. You’re what? Why? Fine. I’ll be home in 20. Yeah. Whatever. Bye.” Lucy looks over at him sympathetically.
”Gotta go?” Nate takes her hand and sighs.
”I’m afraid so. The dragon is returning early. I’ll make it up to you.” He takes her hand and kisses it gently. She bats his arm affectionately.
”You’d better.” Nate pulls her close and kisses her slowly. She slides her hand down his back as his hand bunches in her hair. She pulls away breathing heavily.
”You have to go.” Nate looks at her helplessly.
”I’ll swing by tomorrow. Call me if you need me.” She smiles as she closes the door and proceeds to bolt it. Still buzzing from the whiskey and from Nate she changes and climbs into bed without so much as a thought of the night before.
A few hours later..
Lucy wakes with a start and checks her watch. Three am. She freezes. The sound of chains moving and clicking of locks is coming from the door. She reaches under her pillow for her knife. She hears the door open and close. Her heart races and her breathing comes in sharp gasps. As she watches a dark figure emerges from behind the wardrobe by the door.
”I told you, my dear. I warned you. I told you I was coming, and here I am. My dear, dear Lucille”
Clutching the knife to her, her hand starts shaking. She hears the door to the apartment block slam. Lucy freezes.
Her heart beating like a jackhammer in her chest. She slams the door shut, and bolts it. All of them. She backs away from the door breathing hard. She feels something under her foot. She looks down and sees a piece of paper.
She backs away and stares at it. The knife barely makes a sound as it drops. She falls to the floor, the crimson sheet pooling around her as she kneels. She reaches out for the crumpled paper.
Terror rises in her. Burning hot tears run down her face. Lucy stares at the bloodied paper with just five words written on it, in looped hand.
She wakes with a start. Her heart racing and her breathing uneven she reaches for her phone. It’s 3 am. She can’t figure out why she’s so panicked. Why she’s even awake.
Lucy sits bolt upright and hits the lamp next to her. As the room is bathed suddenly in a soft but bright light, her eyes flit over her apartment. Something’s not right. Something is just, off.
She pulls her sheet around herself and slides out of bed. She doesn’t know why but she reaches for the knife she was using at dinner. Clutching it in her free hand she edges away from her bed towards the rest of the apartment.
It’s small, a studio. Even though she can’t put a finger on why, her body is screaming that she’s in danger.
