i go on the absolute batman tumblr and all i see is sexy fanart of the robins…for shame tumblr! where is my sexy fanart of absolute scarecrow, i yell into the heavens
recently started reading stephen king’s first short story collection, night shift. it’s pretty cool overall (there’s a lot of really weird and otherwise goofy af concepts that he manages to take and make absolutely horrific) but it feels worth mentioning that one of the short stories- i know what you need- reminded me a rather unnerving amount of obsession. pretty underrated movie, you may not have heard of it…
it doesn’t go much further than “increasingly manipulative and deranged nice guy uses assortment of store bought voodoo magicks to remove innocent girl’s autonomy”, but the connection is really interesting imo. mild spoilers but the nice guy in question suffers an appropriately humiliating fate, so if you thought obsession didn’t punish bear enough…i have the thing for you…
SCOTTFREE chapter four: nightmare
The field expanded infinitely ahead of them, with only a small smear of trees visible some seventy metres back.
The warehouse rose above them, a single rusty B the only remnant of whatever sign had previously been there. The place was clearly not meant to be looked at for long, the only remains of a long-forgotten plan to construct a shopping centre in the middle of the field which the town had abandoned quickly. The warehouse was supposed to store tools which construction workers would need to construct said shopping centre, but all of them had since been removed and the town had been alarmingly cagey about demolishing the place ever since. There was an air of wrongness about the whole thing’s existence.
Danny was, suffice it to say, not doing well. With each passing moment, it seemed clearer to him that Allison had absolutely no reason to lie to him.
“Alright,” she snarled to no one in particular. She had completely changed her personality, and now seemed completely dedicated to carrying out whatever plan she had come to enact.
Danny glanced upwards at the desiccated corpse of what had once been a fairly efficient and practical building. “You’re kidding,” he muttered under his breath. “I never have been,” she responded, barely audible. Danny began to truly worry about the whole damn situation.
Allison strolled in through the warehouse’s large double doors- ideal for transporting construction machinery- and Danny followed meekly behind her. The place seemed old and forgotten- which, he supposed, it had been- broken picture windows on all sides, rotten beams covered in spiderwebs, and stacked pallets with no current discernible purpose.
Allison looked around, setting her backpack down before turning to face Danny. “You got a phone on you?”
Danny rummaged around in his pockets before pulling his phone out and nodding. Allison gestured at it expectantly. “What time is it?”
“Just about 2:45. Clock’s ticking.”
Allison grimaced. “Alright,” she snarled, unzipping her backpack and pulling out the grenade. Danny winced- he still hadn’t gotten used to that thing’s presence.
Allison stood up quickly and stared him down. “Okay, now it’s time to listen to me, alright? I’m gonna give you a few instructions- you don’t follow them and the whole thing is fucked.”
Danny nodded quietly.
“Keep an eye on your phone’s clock at all times. This thing comes completely out of nowhere, and I mean that literally. 3:00 on the dot, you gotta prepare yourself.”
Danny nodded again. Allison was speaking with the presence and gravitas of someone who had been through hundreds of wars and desperately wanted this to be her last one.
“You’re gonna stand right next to those giant doors. The robot is going to show up in the field, and will start going for you. As I said earlier, it never moves faster than a brisk walk, but for the love of god stay on guard. This thing isn’t a mastermind, but you shouldn’t treat it like an animal. It can spot tricks. Which is why you need to keep your composure. When it gets close enough, I’ll shout and you’ll need to start moving backwards slowly, in my direction. Do not run. Once it’s about halfway into the warehouse, I’ll unpin the grenade and we run out of here. Then, presumably, it catches the blast in full and then gets destroyed by debris. Do you understand?”
“Y-yes.”
“And one last thing- and this is important- don’t think you’re better than me. I have been through this one hundred million times and my word is law. If you decide to pull a fucking stunt midway through, the whole thing collapses. Don’t change anything.”
He nodded.
It was 2:55.
***
He stared at the horizon- the sun was beginning to fall low in the sky, although it was only mid-afternoon.
just another thing that feels wrong
Danny was waiting, standing by the two large doors while Allison leaned back on a massive stack of planks in the back of the warehouse. He was checking his phone every two seconds just like Allison had told him, and the anticipation was beginning to get on his nerves.
2:58
“Hey, Danny,” Allison’s voice echoed from the back of the warehouse. “Dead bird.”
He hesitated to look up, but two seconds later a large, black bird of indiscernible origin dropped from the sky.
where the hell did THAT come from
doesn’t-
doesn’t matter-
2:59
fuck
fuck
fuck
“Get ready,” Danny shouted. A bead of sweat dripped down his temple, and for a second he felt like an idiot, a child believing the monsters under the bed were real.
but she wouldn’t lie
you’ve learned so much about her in the past…in the past HOUR
she’s a good person
she wouldn’t-
3:00
3:00
3:00
3:00
And suddenly, on the horizon, almost blotting out the sun, he saw it.
Standing there.
For just a second, it refused to move.
It looked-
God, it looked so wrong.
K-CHUNK.
K-CHUNK.
K-CHUNK.
“Allison,” he yelled, for no reason whatsoever.
“Shhh,” her voice rasped from the back of the warehouse.
K-CHUNK.
K-CHUNK.
K-CHUNK.
It was coming even closer now, and he was beginning to get a better look at it, glimpsing the grotesque contours, seeing the horrific meld of outdated technology masquerading as a person for what it really was.
K-CHUNK.
K-CHUNK.
K-CHUNK.
It was truly massive, now that he got a proper look at it. Eight feet tall, that much was undeniable. It was almost the size of a corner store.
K-CHUNK
K-CHUNK
K-CHUNK
And the mask- that was the worst part of all, the mask. Calling it a mask was wrong because it didn’t appear to be covering anything- or maybe it was, who was to say- but it seemed like it was designed to serve the purpose of a face, the purpose of showing a nightmarish humanity where there was none. It glistened in the sunset. It shouldn’t have. It wasn’t- god, it wasn’t fucking right-
K-CHUNK
mom
K-CHUNK
please
K-CHUNK
i don’t want to-
It was now a solid three metres away from him. He felt the urge to just jump forwards and grab it, see if he would fall through it and then slam on the ground. Allison would come out from the warehouse and she’d show him the grenade and reveal it was made of cardboard the whole time, she’d have been lying and the whole thing would be a hallucination on his part, and she would be filming him and would show it to everybody tomorrow and it would hurt but god it wouldn’t be as bad as this-
K-CHUNK
And it stopped.
Danny’s heart didn’t feel like it was even a part of his body anymore.
And then, Allison, from the back of the barn- “MOVE!”
And he began slowly pacing back, moving sideways like some sort of great idiotic crab before pacing backwards in great strides, like he was taking a massive step forwards but in reverse. The creature, yes that was the word for it, not even an automaton because he could swear he could see SOMETHING leaking out of it, something he knew wasn’t made by humans, and he could tell for a split second that there WAS something behind the face, something that he didn’t want to see for as long as he lived, which wouldn’t be long, and oh god oh-
“NOW!”
And then there was a click from behind him, followed by a thunk as the grenade landed in front of him, and before he could blink Allison was grabbing his wrist and pulling him forwards, and then before he could even plug his ears there was a huge, horrific BOOM and he couldn’t hear anything, for a split second he couldn’t hear anything, and Allison was screaming and he was screaming and oh god it wasn’t right and maybe if you hadn’t doubted her this wouldn’t have happened, maybe you all could’ve been smarter today but especially you, and they were both running, maybe a half metre from the doors now as the entire building became enveloped in a ghastly, unearthly orange glow and then he was SO close but something grasped him from behind and he fell, his chin slamming on the dirt and it felt like his neck was broken for a mere split second but he knew it wasn’t, and there was something grabbing him from behind, something cold and sleek and metallic but burning, burning like mad, and he turned around and it was the thing, oh god not even the creature but the thing, and he looked at it for a split second and saw that bits and pieces of its mask were beginning to split apart and fall off and he could see the contours of something that shouldn’t, couldn’t exist and he screamed, and he looked backwards at Allison as she tried to move, yelling for him, and then the roof collapsed on top of her (or at least a part of the roof, if it mattered at all), and his hearing came back briefly just so he could listen to the sound of every part of her body snapping under the weight of a thick metal sheet, and for a split second he felt the arm holding him go limp and die and he thought, or rather he knew it was dead and then suddenly the entire building began to implode inwards and he screamed and screamed and then he was gone.
SCOTTFREE chapter three: dead bird
Danny crept out into the hallway, and desperately tried to move towards his locker without attracting the attention of anybody. He unlocked it as quietly as possible, snaked his arm in, and pulled out a ziplock bag with a single sandwich inside.
Suddenly, a wadded-up ball of paper hit him from behind.
“The hell,” he muttered under his breath, turning in the direction the impromptu weapon had come from.
god i hope it wasn’t josh
What he saw was Allison motioning at a door at the end of the hall, moving her hands like crazy. She was basically doing interpretive dance. It was really impressive.
He moved slowly and cautiously towards her, like an action hero approaching a serpent. People were moving all around him, the hallway a claustrophobic meld of what seemed to be everybody in the school.
“Danny!” Allison shouted enthusiastically as he approached. Some people turned to look at them. He wanted to scream.
“D-did you throw that ball of paper at me!?”
“Quite simply, Daniel,” she rasped, her voice much quieter now.
“So here’s what’s gonna happen, okay? We’re gonna stroll at a leisurely pace until we are off the premises, and then I am going to explain some extremely important things to you. I can guarantee ahead of time that there’s absolutely positively no way you’ll believe me, which is when I will dramaturgically provide proof.”
Danny blinked. “What?”
Before he could respond, or perhaps for want of a better term decline (Josh was starting to seem rather appealing to him at this point) Allison swung the door open and pushed him outside in one fell swoop.
Danny nearly fell down the stairs, and took about five seconds to regain his composure. By the time he had suitably calmed down, Allison was trekking across the field to a picnic bench that was ambiguously on school grounds. He broke into a mad dash, desperate to catch up to her.
“Alright,” he stuttered, “I’m really not enjoying what’s going on here. Are you taking me off school property? Is this…is this a drug deal?”
“God, Daniel. You gotta chill, man. Not a single teacher comes out here for…” She mimed checking a watch. Danny squinted at her wrist and noticed she wasn’t wearing one.
“Thirty minutes. Yeah, we’re good for thirty minutes.”
“Are you trying to sell me substances?”
“This would be a fuckin’ awful place to do so, man.”
They were now near the picnic bench. Allison reclined dramatically on it, and Danny hesitantly sat down on the opposite seat.
“What are you trying to do right now?” he whispered, somewhat fearfully.
“Danny. I’ve gotta tell you something, man. Something that concerns you.”
“What? Just get it over with, seriously.”
she’s gonna tell me that she likes me
holy shit
i legitimately have not thought about that possibility until right now
is this like the first person who’s gonna tell me she has a crush on me
and will i have to, like, turn her down, or-
“At 3:00 on the pm, a gigantic automaton will come out of nowhere and beat you to death.”
Danny blinked.
The wind whistled around them. There was nobody around as far as the eye could see.
“What?”
“Now, I understand that this information might be confusing-“
“No, that’s…hey, how do you know about this?”
Allison grinned, in perhaps the most ominous way conceivable by man.
“Which brings me to point B, Daniel. The entire fucking town is caught in a gigantic time loop.”
There was a brief, excruciating pause.
Danny’s eyes darted around, and he looked over to the school to see if anybody was watching them.
He stared at her.
Allison coughed. “Pardon me,” she muttered.
Danny glanced around again, and then leaned over the table.
“Like…like in the Marlon Wayans movie Naked?” he whispered.
“Yeah, kind of.”
“And…so…hey, wait…how do you…”
“I’ve been in the time loop in question for about…ummm…I’d say twenty years as a rough estimate?”
Danny felt a brief glimmer of compassion, but snapped out of it almost instantly. This was ridiculous.
“And you’re just thinking to talk to me about this now? Also, are you…are you older than me? And, to reiterate, why are you JUST THINKING TO TALK TO ME ABOUT THIS NOW?”
Allison leaned back and giggled. “Aaaah, but therein lies the problem, Daniel. You don’t remember jack shit. I’ve told you all this a million times. Rough estimate.”
Danny felt his eyes drifting upwards. It was a dismal, cloudy day. October was upon them.
“You’re lying,” he whispered. “I don’t know why you think this is funny, but-“
A brief flash of…something passed over Allison’s face. Some sort of ungodly mixture of anger and fear. Danny lurched back a bit.
“Humor me,” she muttered, her voice almost a growl.
Danny desperately tried to depressurize his organs. “Fine. I’ll ask you some questions about this whole thing, huh? Will that make you feel better? Okay, number one- if we are in some sort of eternal time loop situation, do you have any idea of how to get out?”
Allison sighed and began cracking her knuckles. “Presumably the loop ends if we kill the automaton. That’s…”
Danny stared her down. “Is that just another rough estimate, though? How do you know?”
Allison popped the knuckle of her pinky finger with extreme prejudice. “I mean, it’s a pretty reasonable assumption. The robot shows up on the same day the loop starts, right? So…I mean…there’s gotta be some sort of correlation between the two. And then there’s the fact that it always tries to kill you and me…y’know, the works…”
“And it goes after us, specifically? Does it kill any other people as like…preparation, or…?”
“I’ve…we’ve lured it out into public areas before. It doesn’t kill anybody who’s not actively in its way for a long period of time. It’s less Terminator and more like the thing from It Follows. I don’t know. You’ve seen movies.”
“And…you’ve been in this loop for ten-“
“Twenty.”
“Twenty years, which apparently means you’re older than me, which is a really messed up thing to lie about, if you are lying, and more to the point you still haven’t killed it, it being the giant fucking Terminator murder robot. Why are you roping me into this? Even if this is all true, why do you still care?!”
Allison leaned her head back. “Geez, I don’t fuckin’ know, Danny. Put yourself in my shoes, dude. The world doesn’t change. It’s the same thing every day. Nothing’s new. I can’t watch new episodes of shows I used to enjoy. I don’t know what sleep is like, what dinner is like, what Micheal Wayne’s gonna talk about on the evening show…who’s gonna fucking win the election…what a SUNSET is like, Danny, it’s…it’s just waiting, even on the days when I try to do something. Waiting.”
Danny glanced at her again. She had now sort of sunken into herself, a mess of a person. “It’s fucked up,” she muttered. “You didn’t have to see that.”
Danny almost extended a comforting arm, before dropping it immediately. “So…what…what’re we going to do?”
Allison sprung upwards, fully renewed, and Danny leaned back in defensive terror again. “Which brings me to point C!” Allison grabbed her backpack- it had been sitting beside them the whole time- unzipped it, and pulled out an entire fucking grenade.
Danny looked at Allison.
Allison looked at Danny.
The grenade was sitting in front of them.
Allison smiled.
Danny looked at her.
Before he passed out, the last thing he heard was her telling him to watch out, there was a rock on the ground and she didn’t want him to hit his head.
***
Danny’s eyes snapped open and he realized that Allison had dragged him behind a tree. She was now hunched over him like a gremlin, as he lay completely prone on the ground.
“Are you good-“
“ALLISON, YOU HAVE A FUCKING GRENADE!”
Allison was still holding the grenade. It was really harshing his mellow.
“That is true, Daniel,” she said, before slowly putting the grenade in her backpack.
Danny slowly stood up and cracked his back. “Listen, the whole monologue you did back there was really sad and I definitely want to believe you, but…”
She stared at him expectantly.
“Hey, wait. Shouldn’t you know what I’m about to say next? You knew that I was gonna faint, but-“
“You were about to ask me for proof about the existence of the time loop, like in most time loop movies with the exception of the 2017 Netflix comedy Naked starring Marlon Wayans, in which Wayans wakes up repeatedly in an elevator completely nude.”
There was a pause.
“That movie still has a better twist than Shutter Island,” the two of them said simultaneously.
Danny clapped a hand over his mouth in genuine (!) surprise. “Hooooooly jimblegimbles.”
Allison smirked and cocked her head to the sight. “Oh please. I’m just giving you proof that I’ve spent decades trapped in a temporal void beyond human comprehension, not doing a backflip.”
Danny regained his composure and then proceeded to point at her dramatically once more. “That’s still not enough proof! I need you to…like…point out something that will happen in the surrounding environment! And tell me about it, and then…then it’ll happen, and I’ll do a super exaggerated voice and say ‘oh me oh my you sure were not kidding!’ You know! Like in the popular 2019 film Happy Death Day 2U!”
Allison pointed up at the sky. “Dead bird.”
Danny looked upwards expectantly.
Three seconds passed.
Nothing happened.
Allison grinned. “Nahhhh, I’m just kidding. Imagine, though.”
“You still haven’t told me where you got the grenade from, by the way.”
Allison almost pulled it out of her backpack again, only for Danny to begin waving his hands like a madman. “Whoawhoawhoa, I’m not suggesting you take it out. I’m suggesting you…like…explain to me. I don’t need a visual demonstration of the grenade’s properties. I am ninety nine percent sure that it’s one hundred percent real, alright? I’m just gonna need some context before I put all of my trust in your extremely, extremely dubious methods.”
Allison cracked her neck dramatically. “Welll, it’s kind of a complicated story. All you need to know is that I won’t be able to have a grenade in the loop again…ever, really. And I think you may have gleaned by now that I intend to kill the robot with it.”
Danny nodded. “I did indeed assume that…thank god you weren’t intending to use it for anything else…Anyways, if this is your only chance to kill the robot with a grenade…do you have, like, a plan of attack? We can’t screw this up.” Danny realized with a kind of gnawing fear that Allison had begun walking forwards at a kind of mild stroll, and followed her with next to no reluctance. Allison was starting to seem less trustworthy and more like some kind of last resort.
Allison stroked her chin as she hustled through the grass. “I usually like to lure the robot to out of the way places when we fight it,” she muttered. “On the off chance that we do escape the loop, I’d really enjoy not having to explain the fact that we were fighting a gigantic robot to the death to the authorities the day after. So, I usually go to the warehouse near Shelley Field. Just a big open area, with a place where we can hide right in the middle.”
Danny paused. “And? How does the grenade factor into this?”
Allison jerked her neck around in an almost owl-like gesture. It kinda freaked Danny out. “I’m getting to that,” she snarled. “I don’t really feel comfortable explaining in anything but broad strokes until we get to the warehouse, but here’s what you need to know, alright?”
Danny nodded like a good little soldier.
“We’re gonna hop on a bus and take a ride to Shelley Field. We get off, we saunter over to the warehouse, and then YOU…”- she pointed at Danny dramatically- “-you are going to be bait. In every single loop, the robot goes for you first, no exceptions.”
Danny paused. “Wait. You want me to be bait?”
“At least until I throw the grenade, yeah. It goes without saying that I’ll be in the warehouse at this point. And please don’t forget that I’ve done this a hundred bazillion times before. You’re in good hands.”
“Allison, I met you twenty fucking minutes ago! I’m not gonna put myself in the way of a murder…demon…thing! No matter how ambiguously real it is!”
She groaned. “And yet! And yet is the proof I have provided you with not enough?!”
Danny groaned even louder in response. “It is very impressive! Extremely impressive proof! And yet! You may just be a crazy psycho!”
“I mean, I’m not not a crazy psycho.”
“Allison, this is all beside the point, man…one question I have, how durable is the robot?” He paused. “This HYPOTHETICAL robot.”
“Well, for context it basically looks like someone dumped a bunch of CRTs on top of each other and stuck some arms and legs on it, but once you break through all the computers it’s got a weird sleek metallic shell or something. And that thing can take a beating. But…I mean…it took…I’d say…three gunshots in the same area to make a semi-large crack, so a grenade should do just fine.”
“Hold up…you know how to use a gun?”
“Well, yeah, duh. Twenty years, dumbass. And plus, the warehouse will collapse on top of it immediately after anyways, so if the grenade doesn’t fully take it out we’re not done for.”
“Wait, but you’ll be in the warehouse, Allison…you plan to get out how?”
She sighed. “Well, I mean, we’ve all seen movies. Grenades don’t detonate instantly, and this warehouse is about twenty metres across, so I can make a mad dash and get out pretty quick. Meanwhile, the robot seems resigned to a constant Micheal Myers leisurely stroll, so it presumably won’t dash out to escape. It’s not insanely smart, that much I can confirm.”
Danny realized somewhat passively that they were now at the bus stop. “Well,” he muttered. “Fine! I’m following you! I am going in the direction you’re going!” He paused, and then raised a hand up exaggeratedly. “Which is NOT the same thing as trusting you!!!”
She slapped him on the back of the head. “Danny. Daniel Callahan. This would be the weirdest fucking practical joke ever. I simply do not play.”
He sighed. “Fine…I guess…don’t have any problems with that…geez, man you slapped the back of my head really hard…”
Allison groaned. “C’mon man. We’ve got infinitely bigger problems.”
As the bus pulled up and Danny and Allison stepped on, Danny couldn’t help but feel as though he was being carted off to die.
SCOTTFREE chapter two: yesterday
Danny Callahan had been quietly awake for forty-two minutes when he realized (somewhat dispassionately) that he had History today.
He had a truly awful tendency to only remember things a mere hour or so before they became relevant to him, and this was unfortunately one of those instances. He despondently stumbled downstairs, pulled out a box of brand nonspecific cereal (he assumed it was of the corn variety just from the packaging, which very clearly displayed a farm animal), and began to pour it. He was on the verge of dramatic bellyaching, which was a very entertaining thing to be on the verge of. Just as he was about to wallow in a puddle of self-pity (or perhaps wallow in his textbook, which was in and of itself kind of a puddle of self-pity for the dead white men whose exploits it detailed), his father came in through the front door.
“Dad? Thought you were in bed…”
“Heavy machinery…garage…required me to…I don’t know…”
“I thought that noise was coming from our neighbours.”
“I just realized we needed wood planks for the renovation, that’s all…”
“You were up sawing wood planks at…six thirty in the morning…?”
“The renovation…”
“You’re never going to renovate the house, dad!”
“Sleep! Sleep, my dear Daniel…that’s what I need…”
“Apropos of nothing, what day is it again…? I forgot…”
“Danny, I do not have the capacity to answer your question at this time…”
“Then…don’t…fuckin’…operate heavy machinery at six thirty in the morning!”
“You have to go to school.”
“That is indeed an apt observation, Father!”
“Daniel! I cannot commune with you any longer! I simply must sleep!”
“Have fun!”
“I will!”
He sighed and pulled out his phone. It was Tuesday.
He wondered if that mattered to anybody.
***
He was strolling down the street in a manner that indicated both immense tiredness and vague boredom, when he came to a large overpass.
Sometimes there were birds here, which he fed when he was in a particularly good mood. He pulled off his backpack and rifled around in the back for seeds, when he looked up and noticed a man coming around the left bend of the overpass.
He was disheveled, wearing a jacket with far too many patches that didn’t appear to be his. His hair stuck out in sparse, almost triangular tufts, and led to an uncommittedly shaved beard. He squatted down, and Danny stood up slowly.
fuck man, what if i offend him or something, he’s probably…underhoused
The man slowly reached into a crossbody that Danny had completely failed to notice he was wearing, and began to equally slowly pull something out. Danny glanced at him expectantly. “Birds,” he mumbled, pointing at the birds.
Danny realized that his crossbody was the exact right size to hold a small weapon and stood up far quicker than he would have liked to admit.
The fear of offending this disheveled man increased one thousand fold.
The man unsheathed a packet of seeds (!) from the bag and then poured them onto the ground. The birds did not touch them, despite having been clustered around the man seconds prior. “Done now,” he muttered.
The man stumbled away, and Danny watched as he shambled around the bend. He almost fell into the stone bricks that made up the overpass, before catching himself and tilting a few degrees to the right. He ran up a hill in the distance and then was completely out of sight.
Danny considered for a brief moment that he really needed to work on his situational anxiety.
***
He was sitting on the steps, woefully early for school. Some people were standing a few metres away, though none of them had clustered into groups yet and were all vaguely contemplating mortality amidst themselves.
He didn’t know what to do, and it was kind of killing him.
Some more people were filtering in, but-
can’t people watch if you dont wanna look like a creep
He was stumped. He considered for a brief second pulling out his history textbook, which would be, of course, the rational decision to make-
i simply refuse, daniel, you simply musn’t
He leaned back, his head brushing the top steps, and sighed.
i hate it when it’s a normal day
More and more people were coming in now. He checked his phone, and realized vaguely that there were only a few minutes before the bell.
Josh Nevcled passed by the stairs, and his panic response activated immediately.
He didn’t like Josh, not in the slightest.
Josh noticed that Danny had tensed up into a weird pseudo-ball shape, and stumbled over to him.
“The fuck, man,” he said, chuckling under his breath. “You good? You look like you’re freaking out a bit…”
Danny sputtered several vague mumbly things.
Josh plopped down next to him, and sighed.
“Shiiit, man…it’s a lovely day…”
Danny glanced down at him and tried his best to not choke on stress-bile and die quietly. Josh sat up suddenly, and Danny leaned forwards with righteous distress.
“Say…my brother says you really went to town on him last night…can you confirm, or…”
Danny died internally.
“Don’t get me wrong, he seems, like…exactly your type…”
Danny stared at the brick edifice of the school, not bothering to come up with any response whatsoever. He had stopped being fearful and was now some sort of grotesque melting pot of fear, anger, and impatience.
The bell rang. Josh was still sitting, smirking up at him.
“Chill, man. I don’t even have a brother. God, you’re such a…”
He dashed inside, desperate to not hear what Josh was going to close with. People looked at him disdainfully as he shoved his way inside, but he weighed his options and it seemed like the best thing to do.
When he got inside, he quickly peeked out the door to make sure Josh wasn’t coming in his general direction. People were still desperately trying to enter the premises, and Danny was unambiguously in their way.
Danny quickly scanned the horizon, and saw nothing. Only someone at the very end of the field, walking towards the school.
allison
is that allison
sure looks like her
doesn’t matter
He went inside, and tried not to think about anything.
***
He was staring at the air vent propped haphazardly at the top of the room, and was kind of disappointed by how much more interesting it was than anything else that was happening at that exact moment. Mr. Doyle’s voice had begun fading into the background, though he was speaking with enough passion to start a cult.
nothing interesting at all
Danny considered, for just a brief moment, taking a nap. It would be nice. He wouldn’t have to think about anything (unless he had a stress nightmare, which would dampen the mood a bit). He would wake up looking at the air vent, the exact same sight he had fallen asleep to, and nothing would change.
bang
The door had swung open theatrically. He perked up immediately, and spun around to glimpse upon whoever had entered at this ridiculous hour.
It was Allison.
but she was never late, always on time
sometimes she was even there before you
She was saying something to Mr. Doyle now. The whole class was laughing. Danny was far too preoccupied with the discrepancies inherent with Allison’s arrival than he was with anything else.
what if she’s planning something
what if she’s going to like kill us all or something, that’s why she was late
she was luring us into a false sense of security to get the drop on us! fuuuck!
She was moving now. Sitting down, or something.
She was sitting down right next to him
fuuuuuuuuuuuuck!!!!!!!
Mr. Doyle was now addressing the class like absolutely nothing had happened. It was really unprofessional of him.
allison carmicheal is sitting right next to you, you gosh darn idiot, a girl you have never spoken to in your life and there were many seats open to her
He didn’t know what was happening. If physics didn’t exist, a large drop of sweat would be to the right of his head.
Calm down, he thought to himself. Maybe she just picked the nearest seat open to her. Maybe she’s not doing anything.
He jerked his head upwards to look at the vent again. The vent was his friend. It was literally mentally incapable of judging anything.
Josh was right behind him, he realized absentmindedly. He suddenly stopped looking at the vent and immediately looked forwards, not really bothering to think about how weird it would look to any outside observers.
alright you idiot let’s go over the facts
allison doesn’t have any friends with the exception of josh nevcled (!)
who immensely dislikes you (!!!!!)
for some reason
and now she is sitting next to you when there were…
He looked backwards for a split second, counted all the available seats, and then immediately looked forwards again when he saw Josh glaring at him disdainfully. He had not looked at Allison once since she sat down. The risk was far too high.
there were FIVE open seats available
atleastaccordingtomycount
so why is she doing this
and also josh may think you are trying to date her
which would be bad
because if there is ANYBODY allison carmicheal is dating presently it is
josh nevcled
who thinks you made out with his brother
who does not exist
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Allison nudged him.
“You’re kinda spazzing out, buddy,” she whispered.
He responded with a confused and terrified “Guwhauhah?”
Allison sighed.
“Listen, chill out for five seconds, okay? And for the record, I’m gonna need to talk to you at lunch.”
“Lunch?” Danny sputtered, as though he was not aware of the concept.
“Okay, the bell is gonna ring in two minutes and I need you to not die from organ failure by the time that happens, alright? Are we good?”
“W-why,” Danny said, trying not to barf blood.
“I’m fucking sick of talking in a hushed whisper, bro…anyways, there’s something genuinely absurdly important I need to commune with you about, and so therefore I’m gonna need you to wait for two minutes, at which point you will exist the class- with me -and I will explain the aforementioned extremely important thing to you.”
“What- what’s the- what are you talking about?”
She quietly slammed her hands down on the table. “Reality’s having a rough day, alright? So we’re gonna talk about stuff, and you’re going to listen.”
The bell rang.
“Alright, I’m going to leave the class. Stay here for about one minute and then leave so as to not attract attention. And by the way, Josh is about to lean over and get mad at you.”
She stood up, and exited the premises.
On cue, Josh leaned over and got mad at him.
“Hey. Are you getting it on with Carmicheal or something?”
Danny responded with a halfhearted “…No?”
Josh leaned back and sighed. “We’ll see. Go get your lunch and we’ll talk, buddy. At length.”
Danny stood up and sauntered out of the class, Josh staring at him the whole time. He weighed his options briefly, and decided he would rather talk at length with Allison by a small small margin.
SCOTTFREE chapter one: everyday
Since I wrote you last, the summer is past and gone, and autumn with the sere and yellow leaf is already upon us. I never knew the time to pass so swiftly, it seems to me, as the past summer. I really think some one must have oiled his chariot wheels, for I don't recollect of hearing him pass, and I am sure I should if something had not prevented his chariot wheels from creaking as usual. ~Emily Dickinson, 1845
Her eyes snapped open.
6:42.
She turned over, glancing at her clock. She was right.
She paused for a second, then got out of bed, her feet padding on the ground.
It wasn’t a slippers day, she thought to herself. You screwed up too bad last time. Slippers are for winners.
She put on some very low-maintenance clothes, and stumbled downstairs. Her mother was inserting several dollops of sugar into a cup of coffee.
“Hey,” she muttered. Her mother paused. “Did you sleep at all last night?”
“Had a lot on my mind,” she grumbled.
“You sound like you’ve been gargling rocks,” her mother mumbled, sipping the cup of coffee for perhaps slightly longer than was healthy.
Allison sighed, then looked over at the toaster. Two slices popped out of the slats in the machinery.
“You’re too kind,” she said as her mother put the toast on two tiny ceramic plates. “You want butter on that,” her mother said in a way that was less inquisitorial and more definitive.
“Only if it’s of the peanut variety,” Allison said, a yawn escaping her mouth.
Her mother sighed and trundled over to the cupboard, pulling out a jar of peanut butter.
“You’re really funny today,” she grumbled. “You weren’t this funny yesterday. It’s freaking me out.” She set the plate down with an imperceptible clink. “That’s why I’m so tired,” Allison said. “I was coming up with my best material…” She crammed the toast into her mouth, devouring it loudly.
“Yeah, I suppose so,” her mother muttered. “Anyways, it’s late. You gotta get out the door.”
Allison looked at the clock and then unleashed a practiced sigh. “I suppoooooose,” she bellowed, slowly rising upwards as she slid towards the door. She grabbed a bomber jacket from the rack as she passed, sliding her arms inside before throwing the door open with undeniably effective showiness.
“You sure you need that?” her mother yelled behind her. “The high’s gonna be like forty degrees today!”
Allison looked back and grinned. “I might need it for something,” she said, closing the door behind her just as her mother responded to her.
need it for what
She hadn’t heard, but she knew what she had said.

She turned the corner and was greeted with the sight of Josh Nevcled mowing his lawn. He paused as she passed by, shut off the lawnmower, and turned around slightly to look at her.
“Hey Allison…what’s…what’s good…?”
“Shouldn’t you be at school?”
“Shouldn’t you?”
“That’s where I’m going,” she sputtered, making vague finger guns directly ahead of her.
“My dad’s got me mowing the lawn again,” Josh said, pointing at the lawnmower as if it was the greatest explanatory device in the history of human invention. “He doesn’t really care when I go, so long as…what time is it, again?”
Allison wasn’t wearing a watch, but mimed looking at one nonetheless.
it was 7:02
“You’ve got about…hmmm…I’d say…like thirty minutes…I’m wasting precious time talking to you, you wastrel.”
Josh burst out laughing. “Wastrel? I’m a wastrel?”
“You don’t even know what that is.”
“To some degree! I know! No, actually, scratch that, I’m one hundred percent aware what a wastrel is, you wench.”
Allison cringed exaggeratedly. “Oof. Can’t say wench, man,”
“Is it not just…like…the female equivalent of wastrel?”
“Nah, dude. It’s got super unfortunate implications nowadays.”
“Shiiit, man. Sorry.”
“Anyways, I simply must away…hurry up, will you?”
“You’re in a hurry to get to school?”
“By no means! You’re an idiot if you think I’m not gonna at least be an hour late!”
Josh made a noise comparable to a horse whinny, which Allison was now a hundred percent sure was what constituted as a laugh in Josh terms.
“You’re funny, dude…you weren’t this funny yesterday…”
She winced. “People keep saying that.”
Josh looked back at her with some degree of fondness, and for just a second she was happy.
She spun around and began walking away. “Anyways, you should aim to be exactly as late as me. It’ll be fun.”
“God knows I try,” Josh shouted back at her.
She grinned, and for a split second had no idea if it was genuine.

The diner was almost empty in the early morning. Allison slumped down into a stool by the counter, waiting for a second before a rather impressively muscular waitress shambled over- clearly having woken up too early.
“Allison?” the waitress mumbled groggily. “Should you…should you not be at school, or…”
Allison leaned back in the seat. “Not today…not feelin’ it…”
The waitress smirked. “Can’t argue with that. The usual?”
Allison looked upwards, sighing again. “No…I’m thinking the bacon muffin today…”
The waitress mimed being taken aback, but Allison could tell some of her reaction was genuine. “The bacon muffin? That’s disgusting, girl. You’ll get fat. Not even trying to body shame…it’s just…something not intended to exist in this universe…”
Allison grinned, closing her eyes gently. “I’m gonna need the protein later, anyways…”
The waitress shrugged. “Whatever works with you, I ‘spose…”
Allison scanned the diner. To her left was a rather obese man, with a dangerous scruffy beard. He looked away for a second, staring out the window despondently. Allison grabbed his glass of beer- currently set directly next to his right elbow- and moved it ever so silently in front of him. The man, seemingly very tired and/or hungover, failed to notice.
The waitress came back, bearing a muffin. “Your funeral,” she grumbled as she set it down. Allison smiled warmly in her general direction, conveying as much simultaneous smugness as possible.
To her left the fat man flumped over sadly, his elbow jutting out rapidly to the right. His dramatic gesture caused the beer glass in front of him to topple over the counter, smashing theatrically on the ground. Allison instinctively brushed off her very dry jacket, just as the waitress came in from the back.
“The fuck is this, Gerald?” She mouthed a “sorry” to Allison, presumably in apology for the profanity.
“Muh…muh wuh,” Gerald muttered apologetically.
“I’m going to fucking kill you, Gerald. You can’t do this every morning, you fucking asshat. It’s been three fucking weeks. I’m running out of glasses.”
Gerald got up, brushed absolutely nothing off of his pants, and stumbled out of the door. “Gwunh,” he enunciated gutturally as he left. “God, that guy, huh,” the waitress grumbled at Allison. She nodded empathetically.
“Could I get some hashbrowns?” The waitress looked back at Allison disdainfully. “Kid, believe me…after that muffin you don’t want some hashbrowns…Besides, I’ve kind of got something to mop up here, y’know.
Allison squinted. “Yes, and I am very hungry.”
The waitress wandered into the backroom, mumbling all the way. “You’re an asshole today, kid…you didn’t suck this much yesterday…”
The second she completely disappeared into the depths of the kitchen, Allison got up and left. As she walked out the door, she could hear the waitress coming back to talk to her, muffled by the glass-
we’re out of- oh
allison?
allison?
oh
She walked into the depths of the forest, heading on an alternate route to school. She was planning on dying today.
***
The entire class noticed her come in. She swung open the door, with a little smile on her face, and immediately sauntered confidently to the nearest open desk. Naturally, it was in the very front. Her English teacher, Mr. Doyle, made a point of staring her down. He was a svelte yet imposing man that caused every interaction with him to be menacing to matter how positive. She was no longer frightened of him.
“Miss Carmicheal. You’re late,” he said, enunciating each syllable so the entire class could hear.
She grinned joyfully at him. “Late for the first time this year,” she responded. Small suppressed giggles floated up from the back of the class. Doyle sneered at her, albeit in the most respectful way possible. “I suppose,” he said, playing up his disappointment in a very “rats, you foiled me” sort of way. She kept grinning.
“Anyways,” he muttered. “Let’s not waste anymore of our time. You can lead teenagers to Childe Harold but you can’t make them appreciate it…”
Danny Callahan was very, very anxious. He tilted his head ever so slightly, so as to confirm Allison Carmicheal was sitting next to him. She was. She tilted her head in response, causing him to nearly fall out of the seat. “Hey,” she whispered. He wasn’t sure if she meant it as a greeting or as an exclamation. Danny Callahan ever so slowly moved his head back to its original position, and stared at the piece of paper in front of him with utter terror in his eyes.
He had never spoken to Allison Carmicheal before today.
Scottfree: prologue
[hey! i’m writing a tiny sci fi time loop story about two dumb teens trapped in a horrific temporal paradox and i thought i might as well put it here. I was originally posting the really bad original drafts of this on my dinky little website (awkwardraisin.ca) but for now the infinitely better (at least in my opinion) new draft is going here. more to come! enjoy! or something!]
The creature was massive, nearly three metres tall, its body a squat knot of televisions, computer housings, and looping cables. Every piece looked almost familiar. The screens were fractionally too square. The keyboards had too many keys. The wires bent at angles they shouldn't have. At the centre of it all sat a spotless white mask.
Allison Carmicheal was not scared of it.
“Come on,” she whispered under her breath. “This time. This time’s gonna work.”
Beside her, Danny Callahan muttered and whimpered and slid backwards, grasping for a wall that was not there. They were in a sparse green field that stretched out as far as the eye could see, with the sun burning their necks from above. The grass was a perfect color of green, trimmed vaguely in some areas. It was a beautiful day.
The creature stepped forwards, moving in Danny’s direction.
“Allison,” Danny mumbled. “Please. There’s…it’s…”
The creature sped up, moving rapidly and methodically towards him. Allison made a sort of lunging dive in midair, but missed the creature’s swing entirely and watched with vague sadness as Danny was thrown backwards, yelling as he careened towards yet another patch of identical, beautiful grass. He lay still, several metres away from Allison, his breath ragged.
Danny rose up, blood gushing from his mouth. The creature was still walking towards him, its movements that of something that has very little to lose.
“Allison,” Danny said again. He looked scared in a way that the average human should never be, a state of trauma and desperation that should only be reserved for those who have committed something horrific and deserve the ultimate punishment.
Allison sighed, and looked backwards and saw, several metres away, the remnants of a small wooden baseball bat which the creature had crushed in its large, steely claws just minutes before. She realized that such a weapon was by all means the worst possible thing to combat it with.
There was now a mere two metres between Danny and the creature. Allison broke into a mad, desperate dash and managed to skid to a halt between them. The creature stood before her, looking down at her despondently- that wasn’t the right word, there was hatred in whatever was behind that mask- before throwing her to the side much like it had done to Danny seconds before.
Allison landed harshly, gasping for air as she wiped the dirt from her mouth. She tried to move her left arm from underneath her chest, only to realize that it was now broken in several places where breaking your arm was less than desirable. The creature was now right in front of Danny, and Allison realized with some sort of miserable dawning acceptance that she had failed entirely.
The creature rose upwards, joints from somewhere within its madly-cobbled form popping as it moved. Danny was looking at her, his expression that of someone who has been horribly betrayed in one too many ways.
“Allison,” he whispered one last time.
And then the creature’s fist moved downwards, and Danny Callahan was dead.
A smirk slowly crept across Allison’s face. “Well,” she muttered. “Fuck me, huh?” The creature turned, slowly. Allison looked around, taking in all the field had to offer. “Come on, then,” she yelled at it. “It’s a great day for this.”
The creature trundled forwards, its arms extending slowly in a warped mockery of an affectionate gesture. Allison swore for a brief moment that she could see something creep upwards under its mask.
The creature’s arms clasped around her back, and then squeezed with violent, all-encompassing force. An understated snapping noise echoed across the field. The grass rippled silently in the wind.
Allison Carmicheal was dead.
And her last thought was mild exasperation that it wasn’t even the first time.
absolutely love how the too many cooks guy just casually dropped off the face of the earth only to resurface and be like “yes i am making a barney the dinosaur horror movie” unfortunately i am extremely seated for buddy (2026) starring keegan micheal key
my first words as a child were actually “we should make a cronenbergian body horror movie about clayface” and NOW look what’s happening
in all seriousness this looks absurdly dope and i’m really excited for it…based on the most recent trailer it seems like they’re gonna be adapting clayface’s big bulky goo form from the comics which i’m definitely excited to see, glad they didn’t show it fully in the actual trailer. atp dc is definitely pumping out more interesting stuff than marvel…we truly do live in the darkest timeline…
PS: fun fact! this is THE most low budget DC movie released since Steel, starring Shaq of all people…but I have hope! It’s a universal rule that low budget body horror is infinitely superior to the alternative
Deathloop Concept Art Dump
was perusing the art of Deathloop the other day (it’s a super cool book and I implore you to track it down…somehow), and the concept art for the characters is SO unfathomably nice-looking that I wanted to put some of em here.
Kicking things off with everybody’s favourite morally dubious head of security! I love the art of him in the super dapper suit with the comedically large gun. It’s worth noting that Colt starts a trend of every character having the coolest patches EVER
iiiiiit’s julianna! words cannot express how much I love the sleeveless business casual shirt/giant hooded military jacket combo
If Harriet isn’t your favorite Visionary you’re unfortunately wrong! I really like how her robes combine the aesthetics of like a standard preacher getup/the aeon program’s actual logos and symbols
Wenjie’s outfit is ALSO unbelievably cool! (not to mention super practical for doing scientific research in the snowy tundra) Kinda upset we didn’t get to see her epic jacket in the actual game tho
Just gonna put it out there that Egor is probably my favourite design out of any of the Visionaries. I love his gigantic red coat…it’s so dope…plus the patch that has the very Mike Mignola-esque creepy astronaut on it is quite sick and I desperately want to own it
it’s everybody’s favourite gay bluesman! the concept art of Frank with his jacket off and covered in blood is unironically quite cool and it’s a shame we didn’t see anything like that in the game proper (also the pleasure time album cover is taking me out lmao)
i don’t have that much to say about charlie but the Bond villain-y jacket mixed with the office clothes, dorky little nerd scarf, and giant fuckin toque is goes pretty hard
Fia’s design is super cool and it’s a shame you never really get to see it in the game proper because you’re either stealth-killing her or getting murdered to death by her super saiyan form. I especially like the weird Mayan design on the back of her coat (also do you SEE how chunky that remote is oml)
Sadly there’s not that much art of universal best boi aleksis, but we ball…I do really like how his design underneath the mask looks kinda like a wolf what with the weird elongated nose and gigantic tufts of hair. Also the designs of his mask in the bottom left where it looks almost like a pharaohs mantle are really cool
Aaaaand here’s a bunch of Eternalists to close out this whole thing! I do really like the whole uncanny valley noh mask thing they have going on but the final design of the masks is also super cool
waiting for them to make a harem anime based on the odyssey where penelope has to pick from like one hundred different guys but all of them kind of suck
starting homestuck for the first time in mid-2026 is a very weird feeling
The way I see ABSOLUTELY NOBODY discussing the utter blorbo that is the Tonkaraton fills me with UNGODLY RAGE. He is literally a mummy…riding a bike…wielding a katana…mowing down Japanese schoolchildren with an unstoppable vengeance…One of these guys appears in Dandadan which was a pretty big deal for me but the way they go completely unrepresented in all other forms of media is genuinely crazy. Where is my low budget Tonkaraton movie Blumhouse give it here
Also in the original story he’s a bike POSSESSED BY an ancient mummy that can possess you and turn you into (gasp) someone who rides a bike too much which is really funny to me lmao
widows bay is the greatest show i have ever seen and i say this with only a little bit of hyperbole…bring back weird incomprehensible monsters of the week and drug trip episodes and thirty-minute long scenes of a chain-smoking middle aged woman explaining genealogy
(side note patricia is the greatest character in anything ever)
(secondary side note the flashback episode is so unbelievably funny and scary and good put betty gilpin in all the things right now you cowards)
(tertiary side note why is chris fleming not in EVERYTHING right now)
dw the odyessy is actually really really cool…let’s all just ban nolan from making anything that’s not an adaptation from now on because he’s CLEARLY very good at them
PS: How fkn cool is it that a big summer blockbuster like this has not one but TWO practical fx kaijus
PPS: Cutting the Nobody scene is definitely odd (MAYBE you could put it somewhere else in the movie and retain like the thematic importance but then you miss out on the god tier pun) but I do LOVE what they did with Polyphemus
Sorting Deathloop Visionaries into the seven deadly sins because I just woke up and have nothing better to do
Deathloop is a really good game and I am unfortunately locked in on it super hard right now and ADDITIONALLY whenever I consume any piece of media with seven principal antagonists I feel a moral obligation to sort them into the seven deadly sins so without further ado here is the Deathloop Visionaries Seven Deadly Sins chart or something
(semi major spoilers but none of the game’s central twists are ruined…)
Harriet fits pretty squarely into Pride. She’s completely convinced she’s doing the best for her cult members and outright admits she thinks of herself as some sort of godly being…which is pretty prideful if you ask me…if you let her kill Amador and then return to Karl’s Bay later in the day you can also find a journal of hers where she writes down her “favourite things about the world” or sumn and all of them are about her so idk she slots in pretty perfectly to this one
Fia is probably Wrath. She has a complete and utter hatred for literally anything she remotely dislikes, and her slab serves the sole purpose of making her violent rampages more entertaining. She’s also the Visionary most willing to cause as many casualties as possible given how she nukes Fristad Rock the second she sees you. Her using the Havoc slab to casually injure Charlie for pissing her off (by doing something she suggested!) kind of cements this
Egor fits into a bunch of them imo but the one he works best with is Envy. He desperately wants to throw cool parties like Alexisis but is also deeply jealous of Wenjie’s actual scientific talent in the face of him basically doing whatever until he gets results. Pretty simple but also kind of open to interpretation- Egor works with Pride aswell but it’s just SLIGHTLY less good yknow
This is my most out there one but in a way Frank corresponds with Sloth. Out of all the Visionaries he does the least during First Day (holing up in a club and basically hosting a one man podcast as opposed to, say, throwing a likely very hard to set up cannibal murder party, organizing a big LARP session, furthering actual scientific research, etc…even the fireworks don’t take much effort on his part, and he mostly gets another guy to organize them). Frank is also shown as being VERY unwilling to do anything he’s not used to- he refuses to take any career path that’s not singing when his voice gets wrecked, he’s terrible at staying in one relationship for a long time (this can also be chalked up to him being extremely very closeted which, y’know, is kinda the better interpretation but for PURPOSES OF THE DISCUSSION). Even his (old) slab, Fugue, basically just knocks people out…like, making them sleep…and sleeping is slothful or sumn…
Alexsis is Gluttony I’m not gonna explain this to y’all…he’s also Lust ig but ummm idk he like eats human flesh so Gluttony kinda just WERKS more yknow
Charlie is…ummmm Lust bc he’s a giant simp (I’m running out of points to make here can you see this)
Wenjie did nothing wrong but if I had to put her on this list I would put her under…ummm…Greed? Greed is the only one left really…are there any other Wenjie defenders in the audience…bc she doesn’t even really like correspond to a sin…but ummmm she…like I guess one lore document outright says she was so desperate for approval from the scientific community she plagiarized her reports…which I guess was pretty greedy of her…but…guys I just woke up I’m not even gonna post this what is this
Recently watched all of the alien movies for the first time and Resurrection is genuinely some of the coolest shit ever…There’s a goo demon with a skull for a face and human eyeballs! Brad Dourif gets perhaps the hammiest role of his career! Sigourney Weaver is doing some of the craziest physical acting you ever did see! Winona Ryder is playing Lydia from Beetlejuice but as a space pirate! The only survivors at the end are two gay couples! Ron Perlman kisses a guy on the mouth!
