Someone on Reddit posted about this upcoming strategy & survival videogame based on the Franklin expedition. I remember hearing about it several months ago, apparently it got relaunched or something, but I'm kind of ignorant on the topic so not really sure. By the way, I think it looks interesting, not my fav videogame genre but absolutely would try it once it's available. What are you all thoughts on it? For me, as an avid gamer, I understand why the expedition serves as inspiration for creating this kind of projects; personally, I’d love to see one with a more historical focus (with an immersive map?), but a strategy game sounds nice, so I'm saving Terror: Endless Night.
Been researching into the history of Mesmerism and spiritualism for my diss and came across this article from 1850 which details some revelations a clairvoyant had about the Franklin Expedition.
The text is very long and small but essentially she is claiming that by 1850, Franklin and at least thirteen other men were alive and claimed they were living off of fish and wild fowls. She also claims that Franklin will “first be heard of at a place called The Cape”. Though this wasn’t true I do think it’s really interesting what theories were being thrown about at the time.
Mostly towards the end of the article there are wildly racist assertions being made about the Inuit people, but this can also be seen throughout.
I do think it’s quite interesting that no mention is made of Terror and all of the questions put to the clairvoyant are about Erebus. I get that this is because Franklin was obviously considered the most important but it’s wild to me to see how blatant they were about it.
Anyway I thought it was interesting and wanted to share :)
As I continue my research on Sargent’s service, I’ve been looking through piles of digitalized newspapers and appointment lists (a real time-consuming process lol). However, I’ve seen that the National Archives apparently has some lieuts passing physical records? that I would enjoy to see in person but my mexican arse can’t make it all the way to Kew, so maybe ill ask them for one..

John Barrow Jr. helped O'Byrne gain access to Admiralty papers and before publication asked to see only one biography in advance... that of his "esteemed & gallant friend" James Fitzjames.

Yesterday was May 19, the 181st anniversary of the Franklin Expedition setting sail from Greenhithe, England. As per tradition, I baked a cake!
It's the same blueberry cake I've made the past few years (blueberry cake with blueberry icing) because I really love this recipe. I keep tweaking it, though, so every year it's slightly different. Also, my frosting skills are getting slowly better (very slowly, lol)!
I've been browsing Kindle for all the Franklin Expedition fictions I can find, and I'm not sure how to feel about those books with AI-generated covers… like c'mon, it can be that Hard to find a free-licensed ship vector!

DNA identifications of three 1845 Franklin expedition sailors from HMS Erebus

Three from Erebus: William Orren, David Young, and John Bridgens, and one from Terror: Harry Peglar! Which if I'm reading this right confirms that he was NOT the body found carrying the Peglar Papers. He was also found a good distance away from the others, who were all at Erebus Bay.
Also, no evidence of cannibalism on any of their remains, which doesn't necessarily mean that it didn't happen
Apparently 4 more men from the Franklin Expedition where identified! With no signs of cannibalism they are Henry Peglar, John Bridgens, William Orren and David Young. Lets hope we know more details when the cientific paper is out and that they can identify more men in the future!

In social origins, the Trafalgar captains conformed to the general pattern of sea officers of their day. Twelve were the sons of sea officers (three admirals among them), reflecting the common tendency of sons to follow their fathers’ profession. Eleven were related to noblemen or members of the landed gentry, whose wealth and influence brought the patronage necessary for promotion and appointment. Several came from Scots, Irish or Huguenot families with a tradition of military service. Two were the sons of medical men and one of an eminent churchman (who was himself a peer’s son). The remainder were drawn from a broad range of social classes.
Almost all were younger sons, for although the Navy had become a profession suitable for gentlemen, it was rarely a first choice.
