Everybody knows how I really love rock. Be it music, artists, fashion, movies, books or anything or whatever; just practically all things rock. And the people who know me very well are all aware that I am really into attending gigs and rock concerts. And I’m not the kind of rakista who’s gonna be contented of just listening to rock music or body-slamming at concerts, I am the kind who’s willing to really get my self so much involved in the rock scene. To begin with, I’ve been with three exes who were in their own respective bands. It could be just a coincidence but they all happen to be their bands’ bass guitarists. Also, I try my best to somehow contribute something to the local rock music industry by promoting gigs and events, and even organizing some of ‘em. This way, I managed to make friends with some popular bands (or at least some of their members) like Giniling Festival and Poteyto. But ironic as it may sound, I have never been a VIP in any concerts – until last December.
I was one of those kiddos who were very much devoted to selling tickets for one rock event in our town. Of course I really wanted that particular concert to be successful because 1.) My friends organized it, and 2.) Queso was the major performer. So a few hours before the concert started, I was still in Facebook trying to sell out all the tickets that were left. Lucky enough, I managed to get them sold by giving away a 25% discount on each of the tickets.
My friend, Roland (my cousin’s boyf), was really glad when I told him that I was able to sell all the tickets. So when we arrived at the venue, he and his friends who were his co-organizers led me to the VIP section. I thought they were making a mistake ‘coz my ticket was only for general admission. “That’s OK!” One of the organizers told me and showed me a thumb. Then the guys who were wearing black shirts and holding flash lights ushered me to the best spot in the VIP area.
There was a whole bunch of bands that performed before Queso. I really enjoyed a freakin’ lot! I had my eyes trained to that one band from Caloocan city while they were performing on stage when Roland’s friend asked me if I wanted beer.
“Akala ko ba bawal uminom dito?” I asked, puzzled. OK, I know we were in the VIP area and more often than not, VIPs can do practically everything. But in that particular event, beer was not allowed even if you were VIP.
“Sila, bawal. Bakit, tayo ba sila?” The guy replied.
So Roland and his friend went somewhere in the backstage and after a couple of minutes, they were back with bottles of ice-cold Red Horse in their hands. “Pinapa-bigay sa’yo ni boss.” Roland handed me one of the bottles. We started drinking and it was really awkward because all of the other people around were staring at us. I even heard someone murmured “Bakit sila pwedeng uminom?”
“Nand’yan na nga pala ‘yung Queso, kakarating lang. Mamaya titignan ko kung makaka-pasok tayo para makapagpa-picture.” Roland told me.
I almost choked when I heard what he just said. OH MY FREAKIN’ LORD! “Are you serious?” I almost screamed. He just nodded.
I couldn’t wait any longer but I managed to keep my cool. I pretended to be nonchalant but deep inside I was in the brink of exploding with joy.
Few moments more, Queso was already doing their sound check. And when they started playing, I dived into the crowd and body-slammed with them. It was the best feeling! I did not give a fuck about who’s body-slamming with me, we just body-slammed. And it lasted for like 30 minutes before Queso called it a night. I was really drained and was lying on the floor when Roland pulled me up, “Halika baka maunahan tayo sa backstage.” He literally dragged me along. But when we reached the backstage door, the security guy was blocking it.
“Bawal po dito.” He was telling everybody who was trying their luck to get in.
“Kuya,” Roland waved his hand to get the guard’s attention. “Kasama ko po ‘to.” He gestured to me. To my surprise, the guard opened the door and let us in. I heard the others protested and cursed but I let my self in anyway. I mean, hello! I was about to meet Ian Tayao, why would I care about those people’s protests, right?
So we were in. But Ian Tayao was still talking to the organizers so we had to wait for a while.
“Halika, puntahan muna natin ‘yung iba.” Roland led me to the next room where the other Queso members were resting and preparing to leave. He introduced me to them and they were really nice. I remember Biboy Garcia asked me “Nag-enjoy ka ba sa show?” I just smiled and nodded.
I shook hands with them and we left the room because Ian Tayao was done talking to the organizers. We went back to the other room and Roland introduced me to Ian Tayao. I could not believe my eyes! It was Ian Irving Tayao in the flesh. And I shook hands with him! I was ready to die! He was telling me something but I couldn’t really concentrate. Good thing Roland started talking with him.
When Roland brought me home, I told him how thankful I was and that I really enjoyed the show. And of course, I thanked him for the VIP treatment. I’m sure I’m gonna meet Queso again, but I’m not sure it’s gonna be the same experience.
