being a writer is fun
Your dialogue is stiff because everyone is being too honest
Great dialogue can come from radical emotional honesty. But in most real conversations, people
dodge questions
answer indirectly
lie (badly)
change the subject
crack jokes to avoid serious answers
lie (convincingly)
say half of what they mean
tell the truth but get so anxious/angry/defensive others now think they're lying
If your dialogue feels unnatural, it might be because everyone is saying exactly what they think, or articulating their thoughts too well. Try letting characters hide things instead.
Subtext is where tension lives.
i was thinking about this and i think one thing that's missing here that i use a lot is "A tells the truth; B misunderstands" & corollary "B responds to what they understood A to mean and not to what A actually said"
you can obviously expand this in a number of directions (see the last item on the list! A&B both genuinely trying to be honest but hampered by misinterpretation of tone or assumptions caused by other past baggage)
but you can also combine misunderstandings with stuff in the op as well... A cracks a joke that's half true & B assumes it's ALL true but flippant, and gets upset at the flippancy or misunderstands what's being communicated altogether. A tries to express what they mean but doesn't have the words to describe it, and their metaphor falls flat for B. etc etc etc.
not misunderstanding as plot contrivance but misunderstanding as a fundamental part of human communication.
Why am I not hyped for doomsday.
a whole full ass trailer and not one sign of my girl monica
the avengers doomsday trailer felt underwhelming tbh
can't believe people are buying trash, like literal garbage picked up from the streets bc it was in close proximity to a billionaires wedding. we have entirely lost the plot.
to her mistakes and questionable acts: 'she didn't know it' / 'she didn't invited him' / 'yall are so jealous of her'
to her shallow bland creations: 'she is a mastermind' / 'top 1 on charts' / 'biggest artist of this generation'
Destroy the idea that it’s humble to hate yourself. Destroy the idea that loving yourself is conceited.
I actually recommend everyone write for a rarepair once because it completely changes your relationship with fandom. Engagement stops being numbers and starts being names. You know who's going to show up. You recognize usernames. Someone disappears for a while and then comes back and you're like “OH MY GOD WELCOME HOME.” It's incredibly wholesome. It is also deeply inconvenient when all six of you simultaneously get writer's block-
“We hope this email finds you well” babe, the only emails I hope find me well are the ones from Archive of Our Own
LUPITA NYONG'O ‘The Odyssey’ premiere, Paris July 8, 2026
the point of fanfiction is to write something so self indulgent that nobody else has thought of it before or cares
Sleep should be refreshing and if it isn’t you should look into that tbh
back from my accidental hiatus 😭🩷
