Each year, when we turn our calendars to December we begin our countdown to a new year. I also begin my countdown to a flight to Queensland to see my extended family. A holiday on the Gold Coast should seem relaxing, yet after a week in the Sunshine State I often find myself boarding the plane home feeling uncomfortable and anxious. The reflective state that occurs as the year comes to a close, in addition to seeing family members for the first time in a year, can be stressful. How’s your job going? Do you have a girlfriend? Have you gained/lost weight? What do you plan to do next year?

This year I was prepared to face these questions. Yes I’m still in the same job. No, I’m single. I haven’t kept losing weight, but didn’t gain either. I have no idea what I’m doing next year. Thank you. Nice to see you. Same time next year.

But for the first time in a long time I feel remarkably positive about the year coming to an end. Yes I’m still in the same job, but it’s an exciting job that I love and there’s some incredible opportunities ahead. Yes, I’m single but I’m becoming increasingly aware of reasons people might want to spend time with me or even find me attractive. No, I’m not at my ideal weight but I’m looking great and for the first time in years probably won’t be counting down to midnight on 31st December with a measured weight goal on the tip of my tongue. And yes, I have no idea what I’m doing next year - I might travel, I might get braces, I might move - but whatever it is I’m sure it isn’t worth being anxious about.

After months of hardly posting, I always wind up back on tumblr feeling very reflective as we head into a new year. 

I posted this a year ago today and it really is funny how things change. A year ago I was all about #selflove2k14 regardless of the ‘happiness checklist’ I became so focussed on. I realised, in as much of a Hallmark heartfelt moment way as possible, that as long as I was confident and happy with myself, the rest of life seemed balanced and that I had to stop measuring how content I was based on a series of social expectations.

Conversely, in 2015 I have unexpectedly completed most of that checklist I chose to avoid - I’ve just been promoted to an exciting role while being mentored in my dream area; I had enough fun flings and mini-romances to start a soap opera, a journey which has been increasingly successful lately; I’ve lost more weight; and plan to start 2016 with all this, as well as a holiday. 

However, despite these positive outcomes, a series of events meant I threw #selflove2k15 to the side very early in 2015 and regardless of what Past Daniel said, it seemed most things were worth getting anxious about. It was only until I logged into tumblr to have a nostalgic browse through my archive, like most first-world Gen Y tumblr users, that I realised how important this embarrassingly cliche realisation had been.

Time to get back on track.
