thinking about the kids that he’s supposedly doing it all for. everyone has adopted him. it’s taking me most of my young adult years to cope with my chronic anger because growing up, i wasn’t allowed to express any of it.

and hockey is a predominantly white and affluent sport where violence is normal. racism is normal. homophobia is normal. misogyny is normal.

but Shane Hollander never loses his head. Shane Hollander doesn’t get offended. Why can’t you be more like Shane Hollander? Clearly, it’s possible to be someone like Shane Hollander!

but when you’re not like shane hollander… when it’s impossible… when it’s killing you to try…

shane hollander has his fans. but for many asian kids, he’s probably not a role model. his image is used as a tool to minimize them and their accomplishments and their feelings and their personhood

Shane Love Languages

I want to write a fic in Yuna's POV how Shane learns languages for his loved ones. Starting off with her early childhood in Canada, how she hated that her grandma couldn't speak English and was slow to learn. She hated having to translate for her parents and grandparents, and wanted to assimilate as much as possible in Canadian society. She was born and raised in Canada, afterall. Her parents, like many immigrant parents, didn't mind that her child spoke only English if it helped her fit in. But to communicate with her grandparents, she needed to learn Japanese. When her grandparents passed, she felt an overwhelming sense of guilt. She wished she didn't get so angry and embarrassed whenever she had to translate for them in public.

Then she sees her little five-year-old son with her own mother, learning Japanese so she can have an easier time communicating. Yuna made sure he was in touch with his Japanese heritage, to make up for her childhood where she shunned it. Now, she can see the effort Shane is putting into learning Russian, a mirror of how diligently Shane learned Japanese for her mother.

It's clear that when Shane loves, he will do anything to break language barriers. I might write this in full when I'm in the mood lol

I still stand by my critiques of the show and book handling asian representation but to know that this was part of the thought going into hudson’s performance of shane in the scene between him and yuna, that maybe that also informed the writing of the script and direction as well, is so important to me.

that overall hudson’s portrayal of shane is very emotional but in that particular moment, as he says in the interview… that fear of disappointing, of not reaching that expectation of perfection is so real to the asian experience and for it to resolve not just with yuna telling shane he doesn’t need to apologize, but for yuna to ask for forgiveness, too. to have her recognize the weight of that pressure and expectation—even if she didn’t outright ever state it or even intend to hold them—is so cathartic to watch.
