Do you guys think people who have only read HR and TLG donât process that thereâs a three year gap between the end of HR and the start of TLG?
Because I think people forget that Shane and Ilya were in a secret committed relationship for three years.
I just saw a post that started with criticizing Ilya for inviting Troy and Harris to the cottage âwithout asking Shaneâ, saying it was crossing a boundary (I blocked the account, because we can do that! We can just block accounts we donât agree with!) and I wonder if the poster justâŠdoesnât understand that Ilya and Shane had been dating for three years.
Thatâs not just Shaneâs cottage by that point. It is also Ilyaâs cottage. It had become THEIR cottage.
This is also why I think people really struggle with how Ilya and Shane act in TLG. Because those readers are not thinking about their âfavoriteâ characters being in a secret relationship for three years.

weird to me that so many people are convinced that Alexei was blackmailing Ilya rather than the simpler (and more devastating) explanation that Ilya has been conditioned his whole life to give 'til it hurts and expect nothing back because that is what he deserves.
this also deeply informs ilya's whole thing in ottawa by the way.
like yes, he's freed from his family, but this is still subconsciously his paradigm for love.
the only difference is shane doesn't expect or want that, or crucially even know that that is the framework ilya's got strapped to his back like a russian orthodox cross to bear.

The last time Shane will do that thing he does where he skips his fingertips over things like doorknobs and plumbing fixtures and light switches, things Ilya would never give a second glance to if Shane werenât lingering and commenting on their quality and design and fuck. Ilya has a stack of fantasies about Shane in this space that he still wants to make good on.

Iâm using my credentials to call bullshit on Shane not being good with kids. On a fundamental level it is impossible for him to be bad with kids for the simple fact that the kids would be truly so obsessed with him. Even if he wasnât Shane Hollander Pro-Hockey Player I promise you a beautiful man who is good at sports will never struggle to connect with kids, they eat that shit UP.
Yes and-ing this by saying that the only person who thinks that Shane isn't good with kids is Shane. He's the person who will get really nervous and go "What do I even say to them? What if I do something mean? What do kids even like?"
Meanwhile, Shane:

He talks about it with Ilya on their way to camp like "ugh I probably sounded so awkward, I know they like you better because you're fun." And Ilya has to "there, there" him while trying not to ruin the surprise that the campers has planned to give Shane a huge dinosaur-themed thank you card with all of their names and personal notes scribbled inside at the end of camp.
Sometimes the best fic youâve ever written isnât on ao3. Itâs in 50 frenetic discord messages sent over a fifteen minute span where you and your friend yes and each other into a perfect story that will never actually be written.
I think Iâm so fond of Hayden Pike because I know that in-universe, I would 100000% be a Shayden shipper because I have never once resisted codependent bffs (and then I would eventually get ostracized for OT3ing Jackie/Hayden/Shane because I can never resist a pretty lady)
I don't know I think it's just like. I know this is show fans and they don't know about Bood yet but it does kind of get to me that there's canonically a black man in the GCU who *is* Ilya's actual friend and is a big loveable parental sort of guy who gives Ilya advice and support and is a hashtag ally. And is Ilya's winger.
And instead fandom has latched onto the white dude who is described only as "incredibly stupid"
the thing heated rivalry fandom really needs to get into is how wealthy russians decorate their homes, incl those who've moved to north america. i want to see HR fic where Ilya lives in a mcmansion with gilt and brocade and fake fruit bowls
Like I just think we need to make sure post-retirement Shane has a relatively safe hobby that is both enriching and challenging for him so that he doesnât kill himself cave diving within one year. And I think that hobby could definitely be tying up his husband in beautiful knots and riding his dick while surveying his good work.
