People:☝️🤓"Actually, Harris isn't supposed to be fat, they never call him fat. They say 'soft, and stocky, and pudgy' and that's not 🙅♂️ fat he's just 'normal sized'. Have you seen the stock photo? You just inferred that he was fat but that was just your interpretation. 🙂↔️"
Also Those Same People: ✋"Actually Shane is autistic and that's obvious 💡 from the text even though the word "autism" was never used one singular time and the author confirmed that she only accidentally wrote him as an autistic character. ☝️ BUT he IS autistic and you're actually dumb if you don't get that from the text. 😤"
if we don’t get a wide shot of shane tonguing ilya’s hole and fingering him until he comes while shane whispers encouraging shit like “yeah, let it happen” then what was it all for?
hey so the "shane doesn't have trauma" thing is a) because he did not find his mother's body after she killed herself when he was 12, unlike somebody, and b) because his character arc in HR is about accepting his sexuality/identity while Ilya’s is about healing from his traumatic experiences so he can believe in and accept true love for himself, which is extremely basic romance novel roles. and then they switch for TLG! so Ilya has to figure out who he is to the world and to other people while Shane has to learn to believe in and fight for a happy ending again! isn't that neat!
one must imagine shane in a bathroom stall in the metros locker room right before a game against boston, headphones in watching the video ilya just sent of himself jerking off in the bathroom in the guest locker room along with a message that just says good luck tonight :)
Ruby Pike ranting about her date during a Barbeque at the Pikes while Illya and Shane are visiting. "He ate, like, an entire plate of pasta with tuna and then just expected me to kiss him!", she scoffs. "Didn't even use a chewing gum or a mint. Why would I want to kiss him with his tuna breath?"
Shane and Ilya just quickly looking at each other because. Well. Depending on the person the tuna breath really isn't what you're focusing on.
"Who even orders a dish with tuna on a date?", Jade asks shaking her head.
"But tuna is nice", Arthur says. "The tuna melts Uncle Ilya makes are always really good."
Jade rolls her eyes at her brother. Boys.
"Yeah, we like them too, Art. But obviously he wouldn't cook those for a first date", she says. "If someone made me a tuna melt on a date I'd run out of that room so fast. Right, Uncle Shane?"
Ilya chokes on his wine. Shane looks as if someone just punched him in the gut. Jade is happy that her Uncles are appropriately horrified at the thought of a tuna melt as a date meal.
Arthur is still trying to understand what's so bad about a tuna melt.
in the interest of fair whackings my favorite ilya flaw is his obnoxious martyr complex that is actually breathtakingly selfish and a way of avoiding intimacy to keep from getting hurt <3 there is just so much there to explore!!!
the sentence ‘shane obviously does not want to be in a relationship with the giving tree’ just popped into my head fully formed and of course i felt the need to share
Ilya’s I’d do anything for you’ and Shane’s ‘I don’t want that/god are you okay?’ Is so meaty to me.
It betrays such a lack of self worth but it also has him assuming negative things about Shane and how Shane perceives him. Shane doesn’t want Ilya for what he can give him and Ilya has such a difficult time internalising that it makes him resentful in his martyrdom ughhh. I love him
Another aspect of the casting stuff is that so many people are taking disappointment in the casting as an attack against Justice Smith. As if it's not possible to both be disappointed in the casting and also think that Justice will probably do a good job! He isn't what I wanted to see, but if they have good chemistry then it will probably be an enjoyable watch either way. I don't want people to be going "seee, we told you he would be good!!", because that was never the fucking point.
Right, as if we can't possibly have conflicting feelings. That's apparently not allowed.
I'll be watching season 2, I can't not watch it. And I'll be nit-picking and pointing out changes from the book(s) and sharing my opinions about those changes, same as I did for season 1.
And NONE of that means that I have anything against Justice Smith in any way. He's probably a lovely actor, and I believe him when he says he intends to take care of the character.
The POINT is that Jacob Tierney missed a huge opportunity for body diversity in his show and made it clear that this kind of representation isn't important to him.
There are some people in this fandom who don't deserve to read Unrivaled when it comes out and you can't change my opinion. You hate RR, you don't accept book canon, you shit on the book characters, and think JT "fixed" the story. Why would you read the final book in a series you despise just to come online and hate on it? Stick to the TV series and leave us alone.
Reading Troy’s inner monologue in Role Model feels like reading the inner thoughts of a feral cat who is trying to be domesticated. He doesn’t know how to socialize, he has to remind himself not to be an asshole, he prefers to be on his own, and he fucking loves salmon.
Seeing people who are usually very good about highlighting all the implied context in RR's writing when other fans are willfully misinterpreting her, saying stuff like "well, Harris was never reallllyyyy described as fat" is so frustrating.
"Stocky" "soft" and "pudgy" are all euphemisms for what many people would call "overweight." I never imagined Harris to be extremely fat, but I did imagine him having a squishy belly and love handles and thick thighs. Don't act like that's not how he was described in the book.
You're right, the hope for seeing an actor who looks like that in a hugely popular sexy show was far-fetched and unrealistic. But that's not because the book is ambiguous about it, it's because we know the world we live in, and we should have known better than to expect anything better.
whether or not you like or agree with it, the fact of the matter is that in canon, Hollanov want kids and that’s probably going to continue to be a running theme.
If you describe it as ‘heteronormative’ you’re ignoring the huge swaths of queer people who also want kids. having children isn’t an explicitly hetero thing and it’s kind of weird to imply that.
- sincerely guy who would rather eat nails than have children so you know I’m being Nuanced about this
i'm back, i'm grounded, i've reached peace within myself and a new level of maturity. i'm centering what's important (enjoying myhollanov). and i don't have a new fic to share lol.
