Listen to this episode from The Invernadero Mind Podcast on Spotify. Today's episode I have Marine Leclerc as a guest, she is a sustainability coach and helps people, specially women to adjust their habits and practices to be more sustainable and minimize their carbon footprint. She tells us how she became interested in blogging her journey and how she decided to start teaching and guiding others. Through her work, many people have learned to adjust and switch to better products and practices. Her blog Attitude Organic, she shows us tips, provides resources, and much more ! it's a true pleasure to visit her page and explore all the goodies she has to offer. What I like about Marine is that she believes in being gentle and kind to yourself while adopting new habits, for example, she believes that the term ''zero waste'' puts a lot of pressure on people and this may have a counterproductive effect. Instead, she believes that minimizing waste production where we can and taking it slow, is the best approach. We also discuss eco-anxiety and how to combat this. Stay tuned ! 1. Kylee Fields on being a self taught coder, on being a woman in the tech world & tactics to get your dream job
What better way to start our first official season with this episode full of good vibes and information
This week I sat for a virtual chat with Kylee Fields, she is a programmer, self taught coder and tech influencer. Her journey on becoming a software engineer has been quite eventful and full of ups and downs, she tells us how she started her self-taught journey and the challenges she faced along the way. We discuss how times are changing in the education system, even though college seems to still be an essential step for a lot of young people, we question if itās something that will change in the future as a lot of careers are being built from hybrid online education.
We also discuss what is like to be a woman in the tech industry and how even in 2021, women can experience mansplaining and micro aggressions from males in tech. She shares a few stories and hopes to become a support system to other women who wish to follow her path and might be an easy target for people with other intentions.
We also discuss algorithms of oppression, racism is a topic that can not be ignored and tech apparently has a lot to do with what our opinion is regarding a lot of things. Kylee explains to us why we have to remain objective and question things while browsing the internet.
In this episode you will learn a few things:
āļø Taking the self taught route can be a big challenge if you donāt have a plan
āļøCollege can have its benefits, one of them being internships
āļøJob interviews can suck, even more when they are by phone so prepare
āļøThere are garbage programming jobs out there, do your research.
āļøHow to career hunt when you are a freelancer
āļøSome mentors can be creepy
āļøGood mentors are out there, look for Kylee on IG @kylee.codes :)
āļøKylee can be really good at creating phrases: No man is the gate-keeper to knowledge (not goat-keeperš donāt know why I said that)
āļøMicro aggressions in the tech world still exist and canāt let it put you down
āļøImposter syndrome can be a signal that you ARE doing a good job
āļøFinding and joining a supportive community online is essential
āļø Algorithms can be āracistā
āļø Tech companies have a big responsibility of the bias they put out on the internet world.
āļø Women can code, real code.

The Ordinary, Tik-tok and Perioral Dermatitis
In this episode I share my thoughts about the Ordinary āfeverā and āskin care of Tik Tokā.
Should there be a social responsibility when it comes to recommending buying a product without educating on the form of usage first? And the complications you could experience if not use properly? How about the side effects?⦠Are we informed of that?
The Social Dilemma is a documentary on Netflix that highlights the importance of transparency and why we should know when we are being sold something or when we are just being sold (to advertisers).
There is a young demographic following all the #hottesttrends, skin care tips, etc, and there are a lot of people out there (including me) who are desperately trying to heal their acne, rosacea, and other concerns. How do we track what piece of content is true and what is not? How do we regulate and confirm the validity of a product? Can we just trust everything that is being shared on Instagram and Tik Tok?
Did you know that in some countries you need a doctorās prescription to just have access to any form of retinol?
I believe there should be social responsibility when selling skin care products online through reviews, recommendations and other influencer tactic. There should be transparency and there should be a guideline of requirements imposed by these platforms when it comes to selling any personal use products. You know a list of must-do when offering a product and this should include all the side effects, the ingredients, and the percentage of success. But who will? in a world where consumerism reigns, we are just focused on selling.
Listen to my take on this and let me know what you think!
Lesson of the day is: Do your research and do not fall for everything that you see and hear. #skincare #theordinary #perioraldermatitis

Stress and Perioral Dermatitis
2020 in general has been a tough year. Lots of things happened and most of them had a big impact of the planet such as wildfires and global warming, racial injustice, COVID-19, confinement, the presidential elections, etc. All of these at one point affected my sleeping habits because letās face it, keeping up with everything has not been easy. The lack of sleep has affected my stress levels and of course my skin. Iāve been experiencing constant flare ups and let me say, they were not looking pretty. So I decided to start monitoring the content I consume each day and started working on my sleeping habits.
It went like this:
First, I know staying informed is good but itās only good if itās in moderation. I cut the time I spend reading news and following up with current events. Not just for my sanity but also to help my stress levels.
Second, I started working on my #nighttimeroutine. My job demands that I work most of the day in a sitting position and this has been affecting my posture and my neck. So I decided to start taking warm showers to help my sore muscles and also to wind down. I also adjusted my diet so that I only eat things that are not too heavy to digest and that will keep me up at night.
Fourth, I have been very strict on my sleeping schedule. I usually go to bed at 11 but I decided to give myself 30min extra to relax and wind down. Now I must be in bed by 10:30pm no matter what and Iām not touching any electronics.
Last but not least, falling asleep used to be a challenge but I discovered a technique on the internet that has helped tremendously, and it goes like this: Start by taking deep breaths as you close your eyes. Then, with each exhale, start relaxing your muscles. Last, start humming while you exhale. Yes. Inhale and as you exhale hum with your eyes closed. Do this as many times as you need. It worked so well for me! It used to take me about 15 repetitions before actually falling asleep but now I do it 5-6 times and Iām already down. Itās a miracle.
I cannot stress enough how much this has helped me stop my flare ups. A good night sleep helps with your energy and stress levels and therefore, it has a major impact on how radiant your skin looks.
How about you? Have you been sleeping well?

Toxic positivism in times of racism
This year hit us hard, not only because Covid-19 stopped the world, but also because when it looks like we are finally overcoming our quarantine problems, something else happened.
The murder of George Floyd happened.
There have been many people speaking on the topic, so Iām not going to focus on telling the story of what happened nor am I going to tell you why white privilege is an issue. There are thousands of people, journalists, entrepreneurs, articles, videos, podcasts, books, etc and other sources where you can get this information from. Also, I know It's not my place to explain the pain the black community is feeling because Iām not black and I recognize that I will never know what itās like to be in their shoes, but I commit to learn as much as I can about privilege and systematic oppression.
What I do want to talk about is how Iāve been seeing white people and the hispanic community, which is the community that represents me, preach positivism all over the internet. Just like with everything that happens, I realized that itās a very bad habit of us to try to shove positivism down our throats when in reality it is not the time to be positive.
We should not be positive right now. We should be angry and pour our anger on the people responsible for not making justice happen for the murders of so many innocent black people.
Is positivism bad? No.
Is dismissing their feelings and anger bad because we canāt relate? Yes!
Why are we trying to water down the sour taste with a āāletās be positive and letās hope that things will changeāā advice? Problems such as racism will never go away with just wishful thinking and sage vibes. We need to get up and actually do tangible things to help this thing go once and for all.
Why am I talking about this in a blog thatās supposed to be about beauty, skin care, eco friendly, animal rights and mindfulness stuff? Because itās the right thing to do. Because itās important. Because ruining my websiteās aesthetic should be the least of the problems. It is about humanity and we must talk about it.
In my opinion, the biggest problem and most dangerous thing to do is to be an ENABLER. An article from the Washington Post described this better than I will, but here it is, in my own words:
An enabler stays quiet.
An enabler laughs when he or she hears an āāinnocentā joke about race, the same goes for misogyny
An enabler doesnāt get involved nor do they film it when he or she sees a racist act happening, because well, itās not their problem
An enabler sees things happening but doesnāt do anything about it
Being an enabler is the most dangerous thing to be, because that attitude tells people- who go around blurting jokes, act racist towards minorities, and use their white privilege to their advantage- that it is okay and there will be no consequences.
How can we make them realize? How can we make them wake up and face the reality of their actions? Speak up. Stop it from happening. Call them out. Help and report it.
What can you do if you witness a racist act? Record it, contact your authorities to demand justice, raise awareness, protest, donate, offer your support. Use your privilege as a tool to get to people that normally would not listen to minorities, because my friend it is your duty as a global citizen.
As a specie that represents the very essence of evolution, we are supposed to transcend through time as better human beings, and yet, it seems we canāt pass our mistakes, and that can be the catalyst of our demise as a race. It is our duty to change and unlearn wrong ideals and beliefs, it is our duty to raise better humans and it is our duty to protect our home, but how can we have a safe home and be kind to animals when we canāt even keep each other alive? Letās start with us, with our people, black or white, we are one race, the human race.
My acne story - Parte Un
When I was 15 I was living my best life, I loved going to school, I loved my friends and even though I was getting in trouble for hanging out with āthe cliqueā I was still an A plus student. I was smart and that saved me lots of suspensions lolz! However, once I hit 16 my skin started misbehaving, Although hormonal changes had lots to do with it, I realized it was more than that. I suddenly became very sensitive to any product that was on the market those years, and to my luck, the market for ānon toxicā and āsensitiveā skin care was still very small. Also people werenāt questioning the ingredients used in products, and if they were, brands werenāt listening, yet.
i didnāt know for years that everything- and I mean everything- I was using was causing my acne flare ups and also triggering what I now know as perioral dermatitis. I was almost depressed when I realized that being the beauty junkie I was, I could barely use any of the products I liked! Or saw my mom using. You see, my favorite part of watching my mom getting ready was when she did her skin care routine and when she did her makeup.
But, going back to my acne story. The pimples got worst and It was starting to affect me emotionally. I couldnāt use any type of face wash because my skin would turn very red and start itching like crazy, there were times I wanted to scratch my face really bad. There were also days where my allergic reactions would even extend to my neck area. It was horrible.
The moisturizers in the market, even those who were supposed to be for āsensitiveā skin, would cause little bumps around my chin to appear and of course they would also clog my pores like everything I used, so, I resorted to just using water to clean up and nothing else. My pimples of course would look extremely red and because I couldnāt wear any makeup to cover them I had to go school looking in my opinion, horrible. My mom would tell me not to worry about it and promised it would go away. Well, it kinda didnāt mom, at least not long term. Fortunately for me, the dermatologist I went to managed to heal my acne and my friends never once judged me, on the contrary, I was so lucky to have good friends men and women who made me feel special even though I had the worst cystic pimples in my cheeks and my treatment sucked! But regardless of that, I even got asked on a date by one of my biggest crushes during my senior year. Lol!
I guess in that sense I was lucky to have such a strong support system.
However, this experience was only the beginning of a long journey, you see I had only treated my symptoms, never really investigated further about my so called allergies and forgot about the topic once my acne treatment started getting rid of my pimples and a peeling session got rid of my scars.
I graduated high school and off I went to college, where eveything truly startedā¦because just like a new season of Stranger Things, my acne came back Strongā¦
About Invernadero
THE STORY
T H E B I R T H O F I N V E R N A D E R O
The Invernadero idea was born on a rainy afternoon at a coffee shop whilst scrolling through beautiful pictures on Pinterest.
I wonderedā¦Is it possible to live a stylish, indulging, fancy lifestyle while maintaining the balance?
The balance of being kind to our planet, our animals and our own bodies? You see, there are 4 problems that bother me about the beauty, fashion and food industry:
The beauty and fashion industry are one of the main contributors to pollution.
Companies still test on animals even though science has allowed us to explore other methods for testing formulas AND has also proven that testing on an animal is a little outdated and often times pointless.
Our food produces overwhelming amounts of emissions due to farming and other factors. A plant-based diet has proven to heal, treat disease and offer a better lifestyle, it is also a better option for our global warming problems.
And lastly, personal care and beauty companies still create formulas that contain lots of ingredients that are toxic for a lot of us that have been linked to illnesses. I learned that a large number of people develop skin problems conditions, sensitiveness, and allergic reactions to a lot of these products.
So, I wonder. Is it possible to live a fancy, indulging, stylish lifestyle while being mindful about what we consume?
I heard many people argue that this is close to impossible given that everything involves a degree of conflict. BUT, I believe that we can.
You can love the makeup, the skin care products, the clothes and shoes and you can eat good food that will make you happy and healthy; and most importantly you can do any of the later whilst helping our only home and our species living in it.
The secret? Education. As anything in life, education is the base of all ideals and achievements. Research shows that lack of education will prevent people from living their life to the fullest, and from exploring things they never thought possible. I believe that we can change, and teach others that it is okay to enjoy the nice things in life as long as you choose your products wisely :)
Invernadero is a Spanish word for āāGreenhouseāā. I love greenhouses, they are full of plants and light and they represent life; itās the perfect name for this site that seeks to curate and offer valuable information about all things beauty, fashion and a mindful lifestyle.
Join me in this journey, xoxo Gaby
