This is going to be a bit longer. First off, I have a job where one of my main tasks is to create psychological profiles. Body language plays a huge role in this. But itās not as simple as it often looks on TV.Ā
I only mention this because thereās a big difference between assessing someone in person whoās in the room with me and someone I only see in a clip on my smartphone.Ā
Thatās why Iām really only going to focus here on things like body language and facial expressions.Ā
And only the ones that really stood out to me.
Iāve been rewatching the footage of Chris Evans from CinemaCon in Las Vegas yesterday, saw also a lot of pictures and I canāt shake the feeling that something about his body language is... different. Beyond the funny bits with RDJ (And even those were a bit off), if you look at his baseline behavior throughout the event, he seems a bit strained.
Hereās a breakdown of what I noticed.
The "Protective" Posture (Proxemics): Chris usually (at least what I saw over the time) has such a confident, open presence, but yesterday he seemed to be making himself "smaller." I noticed his shoulders were slightly hunched, and he kept his hands in his pockets or crossed in front of him a lot. It felt like he was subconsciously creating a barrier between himself and the crowd.Ā Has anyone else noticed him doing this more often lately?
Increased Self-Soothing Gestures: There was a lot of "fidgeting" , touching the back of his neck, adjusting his clothes, and shifting his weight. In body language terms, these are often self-soothing behaviors used to manage internal stress or anxiety. He looked like he was trying to ground himself.
Eye Contact & Blinking: His gaze seemed a bit "flighty." Instead of his usual steady eye contact during interviews, he was looking down or scanning the room quite a bit. Also, his blink rate looked higher than normalāphysiologically, thatās usually a sign of being under pressure or feeling overwhelmed.
The "Masked" Smile: If you look closely at his expressions when heās not "active" in a joke, his smiles don't always reach his eyes (what experts call the Duchenne marker). It feels more like a professional "social mask" than genuine excitement. He looks exhausted, honestly.
Social Burnout vs. Character? We know heās a professional, but even the best actors have off days. These events are a marathon of cameras and small talk.Ā Does he look like he just needs a massive nap to you guys, or do you think thereās more to it?
Do you guys see it too, or am I overanalyzing?
Of course, there could be many reasons.Ā
From simple jet lag to partying too hard before the event, and of course everything related to his marriage.Ā
And Iām fully aware of his struggles with social anxiety and so on. Of course, itās also highly possible that he was just having one of those days yesterday!
Iāve also noticed time and again that he did relax when RDJ took the attention away from him, but it was never to the extent that he really relaxed.
His behavior at this event just really stood out to me. He seemed tense at the Oscars, too, but he was only seen for brief moments there, and thatās not enough to really judge someone.Ā
Iāll leave it up to you to discuss what it might be. I just wanted to share my observations.Ā š
