The boat shook as Lori went at the old man, and Abby scooted behind them, watching with huge, possum eyes. Lori punched Buzz in the mouth, and he shoved her so hard she nearly fell over the edge, barely grasping her seat in time. The old man snatched the oar, baring his teeth, his face ugly with anger. He got up on his knees and raised the oar high, a batter to the plate. "I don't wanna do this, but-"

Lightning cracked the sky, and when the flash was over the world was stained red, the sky becoming a reflection of the river. There were only two shades to everything now-crimson and shadow. Buzz gazed up. Lori froze too, hypnotized. The woods reminded her of the dark room she'd once developed film in before she'd given up on photography. The red was deep and uncompromising, letting no other colors sneak past it. The storm writhed, otherworldly.

But Buzz still had the oar.
