Meme Therapy

Like so many other folks, memes (and the online communities that share them) have been a big part of my journey to diagnosis with ADHD.

Somewhere along the way I started to save a folder with every single meme that resonated with me or validated my neurodivergent feelings.

I've decided the time has come to dump them all somewhere, so fair warning that this is mostly just going to be a stream of ADHD and neurodivergence related memes now.

P.S. Yes they are stale and old now mostly, but they'll be new to someone

If I know the source I'll try and add it but please have some understanding that this collection (most of it anyway) was compiled for personal reasons and it was never my intention to re-share them anywhere - so I did not keep the best track of the OPs and creators. I simply want to help keep them in circulation so that they might help others in the way they helped me.

Other people: well it's just interesting how after getting the diagnosis you suddenly start behaving like that I mean I'm not saying you're faking it's just funny how you suddenly cannot be normal like you were before

It's so hard to learn to unmask sometimes. I feel like as I learned more about my ADHD, I found I was doing it so unconsciously because I was the main culprit of holding myself to neurotypical standards. I didn't know my brain was literally functioning differently, so I just thought I had a poorly performing typical brain.

I suppress my emotions and reactions, because I didn't think I was supposed to be feeling things as deeply as I did.

I try to hide the amount of chaos and mess I create in my living space, thinking I just needed to be less 'lazy' or buy different furniture I can't afford.

I'd stay silent in group conversations, because no one else seemed to have trouble interrupting or going on strange tangents like I did if I let myself speak up and let out the barrage of thoughts.

I clenched up my body and posture, because other people didn't need to fidget or sit in weird positions to be able to listen or focus.

I'm still doing a lot of these things, because 3 decades of behaviour is hard to let go of or unlearn.

When I feel bad because of certain behaviours I now know are linked to my ADHD, at least now I am more forgiving of myself. I know now I'm not failing at being normal, I'm finding out who I really am and learning new ways to manage. There are good things about being ADHD to embrace, but there are a lot of negatives that impact myself and the people around me too, so I still need to try and improve.

The tools I need to do that are different though. Masking taught me a lot of useful tools, but it also hurt me, made me burn out faster and left me unable to be myself fully.
